Dyslipidaemia associated with the highly active antiretroviral therapy in aids patient: reversion after switching (stavudine to tenofovir and lopinavir/ritonavir to atazanavir/ritonavir) BJID
Domingos,Hamilton; Cunha,Rivaldo Venâncio da; Paniago,Anamaria Mello Miranda.
Antiretroviral therapy has been associated with hyperlipidemia in AIDS patients. This case illustrates the classic metabolic effects associated to the HAART including protease inhibitors and/or stavudine. It was showed that the management of the HAART-associated dyslipidaemia with conventional antihyperlipidemic therapy may fail, being the switching strategy the best option.

Dal Fabbro,Márcia Maria Ferrairo Janini; Cunha,Rivaldo Venâncio da; Paniago,Anamaria Mello Miranda; Lindenberg,Andréa de Siqueira C.; Freitas,Gisele Maria Brandão de; Nogueira,Susie Andries.
This prospective study, involving 76 pregnant women infected with HIV, paired with their 79 exposed infants, was carried out between May 1996 and October 2001, at the Reference Department for Pregnant Women Infected with HIV in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. The mean age of the pregnant women was 24 years; 88% (67/76) apparently were infected due to sexual practices; 88% (67/76) were housewives; 823% (63/76) graduated from junior high school; 14.5% (11/76) reported co-infection with Hepatitis C, 9.2% with Syphilis; 51% (39/76) learned the diagnosis during prenatal care; 67% (51/76) reported HIV clinical symptomatology and 9.2% (7/76) reported opportunistic infections. Elective cesareans were performed in 57% (43/76). The mean gestational age at delivery...

Metabolic effects associated to the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in AIDS patients BJID
Domingos,Hamilton; Cunha,Rivaldo Venâncio da; Paniago,Anamaria Mello Miranda; Martins,Diego Mira; Elkhoury,Eduardo Brandão; Souza,Albert Schiaveto de.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic abnormalities (dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance) associated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in AIDS patients, treated in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The patients were distributed in five different groups: Group 1, HIV-infected without antiretroviral therapy; Group 2, with Zidovudine, Lamivudine and Efavirenz or Nevirapine; Group 3, with Zidovudine, Lamivudine and Protease Inhibitor; Group 4, with Stavudine, Lamivudine and Efavirenz or Nevirapine; and Group 5, with Stavudine, Lamivudine and Protease Inhibitor. The lipid and glucose profile were determined and statistics comparison was made. The findings of this study showed significant statistics elevations of total...

Druzian,Angelita Fernandes; Brustoloni,Yvone Maia; Oliveira,Sandra Maria do Valle Leone; Matos,Vanessa Terezinha Gubert de; Negri,Adriana Carla Garcia; Pinto,Clarice Souza; Asato,Silvia; Urias,Cirlene dos Santos Gonçalves; Paniago,Anamaria Mello Miranda.
In many parts of the world, numerous outbreaks of pertussis have been described despite high vaccination coverage. In this article we report the epidemiological characteristics of pertussis in Brazil using a Surveillance Worksheet. Secondary data of pertussis case investigations reported from January 1999 to December 2008 recorded in the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) and the Central Laboratory for Public Health (LACEN-MS) were utilized. The total of 561 suspected cases were reported and 238 (42.4%) of these were confirmed, mainly in children under six months (61.8%) and with incomplete immunization (56.3%). Two outbreaks were detected. Mortality rate ranged from 2.56% to 11.11%. The occurrence of outbreaks and the poor performance of...

Protein-losing enteropathy in paracoccidioidomycosis identified by scintigraphy: report of three cases BJID
Berni,Aline Dayara de Mendonça; Elias Júnior,Erivaldo; Arão Filho,Adalberto; Paniago,Anamaria Mello Miranda.
Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) or South American Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by a dimorphic fungus, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. It represents the most important systemic mycosis in South America and with higher prevalence among male inhabitants of the rural area. PCM usually affects the lungs, and rarely the intestines. The authors report three cases of PCM, treated at the University Hospital of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul whose scintigraphy with technetium-99 labeled human albumin revead intestinal protein loss
