Equine acute erythroid leukemia Ciência Rural
Panziera,Welden; Tessele,Bianca; Bianchi,Ronaldo; Tochetto,Camila; De La Corte,Flávio; Brass,Karin; Fighera,Rafael.
Acute erythroid leukemia (AML M6) is a hematopoietic neoplasm frequently described in cats and mice, rarely in other animal species. This report describes a case of AML M6 in a yearling Thoroughbred filly. Clinically the horse presented marked pale mucous membranes and exercise intolerance. In addition, the owner and referring veterinarian reported a 30-day history of progressive weight loss. The CBC revealed severe anemia and leukopenia by neutropenia. Cytology evaluation obtained from bone marrow fine needle aspirates evidenced inversion of the myeloid: erythroid ratio (0.2), with 48% of the nucleated cells corresponding to rubriblasts. In addition to the gross evidence of anemia, necropsy findings consisted of splenomegaly and lymphadenomegaly. The...

ABSTRACT: Equine multisystemic eosinophilic epitheliotropic disease (MEED) is a rare disease, characterized by eosinophilia and eosinophilic infiltration of several organs. A 5-year-old horse presented pruritus, areas of alopecia, and moderate eosinophilia. The horse was treated with corticosteroids and antibiotics without substantial improvement; and after the disease progressed to fever, diarrhea, gastric reflux and progressive weight loss. Due to poor prognosis the horse was euthanized. Necropsy revealed poor body condition, multiple to coalescing foci of alopecia, with epidermal ulcerations and crusts on the head and distal parts of the limbs. The proximal duodenum was enlarged, with 3 intraluminal nodules. Histopathological evaluation revealed...

Rabies outbreak in buffaloes in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência Rural
Bianchi,Ronaldo Michel; Panziera,Welden; Galiza,Glauco José Nogueira de; Kommers,Glaucia Denise; Fighera,Rafael Almeida.
ABSTRACT: This report aimed to describe the clinical, epidemiological and pathological aspects of an outbreak of rabies in buffaloes in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. Seven out of 41 buffaloes from the same farm became fatally ill; they showed the clinical signs of ataxia, ascending paresis, and paralysis of the limbs. During necropsy, marked hyperemia of the leptomeningeal vessels, and severe distention of the urinary bladder were noted. Histologically, there were indications of nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis and ganglioneuritis with intracytoplasmic and eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the neurons. The fluorescent antibody test was positive for rabies. Viral antigens were also detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in sections of the cerebellum....

ABSTRACT: This report describes the clinical, pathological, and molecular aspects of a pneumonia by Cryptococcus neoformans in a goat in the Southern region of Brazil. A goat with a history of prolonged transportation presented dyspnea, nasal discharge and cough, and was subjected to necropsy, histopathology, and mycological evaluation. Grossly, cranio-ventral pulmonary consolidation was observed, characterized by firm and grayish areas interspersed with dark red foci. Histopathology of the lungs showed areas of parenchymal necrosis, containing blastoconidia with a slightly basophilic central cell, surrounded by an unstained capsule. It was associated with moderate granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate and peripheral fibrosis. The capsule and fungus cell...

Ischemic myelopathy caused by fibrocartilaginous embolism in a horse Ciência Rural
Panziera,Welden; Bianchi,Ronaldo Michel; Pereira,Paula Reis; Flores,Mariana Martins; Togni,Monique; Pereira,Roberta Carneiro da Fontoura; Corte,Flávio De La; Fighera,Rafael Almeida.
ABSTRACT: This report described clinical, epidemiological, and pathological aspects of ischemic myelopathy caused by fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE) in a 10-year-old, mixed breed gelding. Clinically, the horse presented acute hind limbs paralysis, with a clinical course of approximately 24 hours. At necropsy, no gross lesions were observed. Cross-sections of the spinal cord revealed focally extensive areas of malacia from the T10 to L4 segments. Focally extensive areas of liquefactive necrosis involving the gray matter and adjacent white matter were observed on histologic sections. The lumen of multiple blood vessels in the periphery of the necrotic areas was occluded by fibrocartilaginous emboli that strongly stained with alcian blue. Clinical signs,...
