INCORPORATING SEASONALITY, PRODUCT VOLUME, AND SHILLER LAGS INTO A PRICE LINKAGE MODEL AgEcon
Parrott, Scott D.; Eastwood, David B..
The price transmission model is extended by incorporating seasonality and Shiller lags. Symmetry is evaluated for the length of the adjustment as well as the amount. Retail/shipping point tomato prices are used to test the model. Transmission elasticities are estimated. Results suggest this market is efficient.

Developing cross disciplinary skills through an undergraduate research project AgEcon
Mehlhorn, Joey; Roberts, Jason; Cain, Amanda; Parrott, Scott D..
Undergraduate students can benefit from a research experience with a faculty mentor. Students perceived the research project and faculty mentorship as more beneficial than directed coursework. Mentoring is key to enhancing undergraduate research experiences, but the impact on time should be considered. Linkages between coursework and application should also be considered.

NONCONSTANT PRICE EXPECTATIONS AND ACREAGE RESPONSE: THE CASE OF COTTON PRODUCTION IN GEORGIA AgEcon
Parrott, Scott D.; McIntosh, Christopher S..
An adaptive regression model is used to examine the relative importance of cash and government support prices in determining cotton production over time. The results show that the cash price is more important as a source of price information for cotton producers than the government program price. The cash price was shown to have a greater influence on acreage response in every year, including periods thought to be dominated by government commodity programs.

TESTING FOR SYMMETRY IN PRICE TRANSMISSION: AN EXTENSION OF THE SHILLER LAG STRUCTURE WITH AN APPLICATION TO FRESH TOMATOES AgEcon
Parrott, Scott D.; Eastwood, David B.; Brooker, John R..
An empirical model of the price relationship between distribution stages is developed based on the Shiller lag. The assumption of constant returns to scale is relaxed to incorporate changes in the volume of shipments. An iterative GLS methodology is developed to estimate the model. Tests for symmetry, length of adjustment, and the amount of price transmission are outlined. An application using the change in the retail price of tomatoes based on shipping point price changes is described. Results suggest that the supermarket chain does not respond differently to price increases versus decreases at the shipping point level.

Use of Digital Learning Objects to Improve Student Problem Solving Skills AgEcon
Mehlhorn, Sandy; Parrott, Scott D.; Mehlhorn, Joey; Burcham, Timothy; Roberts, Jason; Smartt, Philip.
Students in a traditional agriculture class were surveyed to learn their perceptions of digital learning objects created by the instructor to improve student problem solving ability. Student assignments and exam scores were compared. The students enrolled in the course with digital learning objects scored higher on exams than a similar section which did not include digital learning objects. However, student performance was mixed with regard to assignment and exam scores for the students who used the digital learning objects.

Student Perceptions of Simulation Games and Training Software on Improving Course Learning Objectives and Career Preparedness AgEcon
Parrott, Scott D.; Mehlhorn, Joey; Davidson, Kelly.
Online simulation and training games were used in two undergraduate courses in agribusiness to help improve student understanding and course objectives. Students responded positively to the teaching activities. The activities also extended the out of class learning environment.
