Community Supported Agriculture in the Urban Fringe: Empirical Evidence for Project Feasibility in the Metropolitan Area of Naples (Italy) AgEcon
Cicia, Gianni; Colantuoni, Francesca; Del Giudice, Teresa; Pascucci, Stefano.
Urbanisation of city-side areas effects on farm land use and organisation are analysed in this study with the objective of seeking the most effective way to implement a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme. Specifically, we used a theoretical framework to describe and assess the relationships between urbanization and farm-styles in the city belt. Our analysis is based on a case study in the protected area of the Campi Flegrei Regional Park situated in the north-western part of the Neapolitan metropolitan area, which is a peri-urban rural area with severe environmental management problems. Our results from the empirical analysis allowed us to distinguish the farms of the area into three behavioural-social groups on the basis of specific features, in...

The Role of Innovations in the Competitive Strategies of Italian Agri-Food Enterprises AgEcon
Coppola, Adele; Pascucci, Stefano.
The aim of this work has been to inquire into possible connections between competitive strategies and inclination to innovation, through an analysis of a sample of Italian agri-food enterprises behaviours. Particularly, some firm’s innovation strategies have been analysed, inquiring into a set of characteristics that at a theoretical level are considered as potential factors of innovation adoption: economic and financial dimension, organizational structure, productive specialization, productive process and the location context. The results of the study have underlined the existence of a great variety of behaviours among the examined agri-food enterprises, which have revealed a highly varied inclination to innovation. The data indicate that the stimulus to...

The Role of Consumer Acceptance in the Food Innovation Process: Young Consumer Perception of Functional Food in Italy AgEcon
Del Giudice, Teresa; Pascucci, Stefano.
This paper analysed the factors influencing the acceptance of functional foods (FFs) of three distinct groups of young Italian consumers. We implemented an ordered probit model based on data collected in a field survey carried out in southern Italy in 2008. The results showed that different sources of information and knowledge (e.g. the internet, newspapers and universities), judgements and motivations (e.g. taste and health effects credibility) are key elements in the acceptance of FFs. This implies the need to identify highly differentiated communication and marketing strategies for both public agencies and private firms in order to promote FF consumption.

Governance Structure, Perception and Innovation in Credence Food Transactions: The Role of Community Networks AgEcon
Pascucci, Stefano.
In this paper we use a combination of behavioral and new institutional economic perspectives to look at the transactions of “sustainable‐oriented” foods (e.g. organic food, fair trade, etc.) which often assume the characteristic of credence goods. When credence attributes are involved in the transaction (e.g. safety, fairness, etc.) information asymmetry and uncertainty tend to reduce the likelihood of different parties to enter in the transaction1. Because spot markets are unlikely to be used in this type of transactions, typical solutions are the use of hybrids, vertical integration and public monitoring (Vetter and Karantininis, 2002; Ménard and Valceschini, 2005). Moreover both consumers and producers (e.g. farmers) look at these products from a more...

Some like to join, others to deliver. An econometric analysis of farmers' relationships with agricultural co-operatives AgEcon
Pascucci, Stefano; Gardebroek, Cornelis.
In many European countries, farmers are a member of a processing or marketing co-operative, and most of these farmers also deliver their products to that co-operative. However, an extensive dataset of Italian farmers shows that not all members deliver to their co-op, and that there are also non-members that deliver. Using theoretical arguments from the New Institutional Economics literature, a bivariate probit model is estimated to explain co-op membership and delivery jointly. Results show that membership and delivering are indeed related, but also that different factors influence farmers’ decisions on membership and delivery.

Agricultural Agent Land-Use and Land Ownership Behavioural Analysis: A Casa Study From a Southern Italian Region AgEcon
Pascucci, Stefano.
The recent CAP reform introduced new income support instruments much more related on agricultural agents land-use and land-ownership conditions than before. In this perspective the behavioural analysis of land-use and land-ownership decision process seems to be a basic condition to evaluate the efficiency, effectiveness and equity of those instruments, and to understand and to forecast the agents response to these stimuli. The land-use and land-ownership behaviour differs according to various land managers, not only on the base of "economic-productive" conditions, but also on the base of exogenous and endogenous "institutional" conditions, such as the presence of formal or informal contracts, cultural values, intergenerational linkages, family-farm...

Factors Affecting Participation of Italian Farmers in Rural Development Policy AgEcon
Adinolfi, Felice; Capitanio, Fabian; Pascucci, Stefano; de Magistris, Tiziana.
In this paper a (micro)econometric approach is developed by considering the farmer likelihood to participate in different policy programs as linked to the objective of farmer to maximize their welfare. In this way we model farmers participation in policy support scheme by using a new institutional economics approach and conceptualizing the decision to entry as a contractual choice between two rural development types of policy. Different discrete choice modelling approaches are used to analyze the complementarity/ substitutability of different policy programs such as environmental-related measures and farm investment supports policy schemes and the main driving factors behind them. We use an extensive cross-sectional database related to the Italian FADN...

Value Creation Strategies in Credence Food Productions: The Case of Organic Farming in Italy AgEcon
Pascucci, Stefano; Capitanio, Fabian; Del Giudice, Teresa.
In this paper we analyse different strategies used by Italian organic farmers to create value from credence food production. More specifically, we consider the following strategies: participation in policy support programmes (i.e. rural development measures and agro‐environmental schemes), direct marketing (i.e. short‐chains, on‐farm businesses, agro‐tourism), on‐farm processing and being a member of a marketing and/or processing cooperative. We use data from the 2006 Italian FADN (Farm Accountancy Data Network) related to 981 organic farmers. To estimate the factors affecting farmers’ strategies and to evaluate them simultaneously we implement a multivariate probit model (MVP). The results could be helpful to implement guidelines for public and private...

Should I Make or Should I Buy? Innovation Strategies and Governance Structures in the Italian Food Sector AgEcon
Pascucci, Stefano; Royer, Annie; Bijman, Jos.
This paper analyses the “make or buy” decision of food firms applied to innovation strategy using 389 Italian food firms data from the Unicredit 2007 database. We develop a set of hypothesis from three theoretical perspectives such as transaction cost economics, strategic management and resource-based view. Our paper aims at highlight whether or not different firm’s features can be linked to the decision to make or buy. We found out that these two decisions are positively interlinked. Moreover we also found out that it is difficult to indicate a clear-cut behaviour for the Italian food firms if we refer to making or buying decisions. We discuss these results and use them to bring some interesting outcomes to discuss managerial implications and/or policy...

COHERENCE BETWEEN STRATEGIES AND TOOLS IN ITALIAN RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS 2007-2013: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS AgEcon
Panico, Teresa; Del Giudice, Teresa; Pascucci, Stefano.
In the years to come Rural Development Policies will be an increasingly important part of EU Cohesion Policies. In particular, Convergence Regions with a high percentage of rural areas and a major development gap will be the most affected by this scenario. The objectives of this paper are twofold. The first is to analyze Italian Rural Development Programs in order to investigate how the Italian regional authorities have interpreted the potential role of the new RD programs and identified the specific strategies to be pursued. The second objective is to evaluate the coherence between strategies and tools indicated in the different programs. The financial plans will be compared in order to detect the possible different strategic approaches existing among...

The Role of Consumer Acceptance in the Food Innovation Process: Young Consumer Perception of Functional Food in Italy AgEcon
Del Giudice, Teresa; Nebbia, Stefano; Pascucci, Stefano.
In this article we analysed the role of acceptance of a new food within innovation processes in the Italian food sector. Our analysis focused on preferences and the opinions expressed by three distinct groups of young consumers in relation to functional foods (FFs). Such products represent an innovation both in terms of technology and commerce for Italian food companies, and the segment of young consumers would appear especially interested in them. Our results showed that a different cultural education, hence the degree of knowledge cumulated by young consumers, is a key element in the preference for, and perception of FFs. This implies the need to identify highly differentiated marketing strategies for firms seeking to reach this segment of FF demand in...
