Synchronized artificial insemination was used to inseminate cows using different types of sire genetics, including low-accuracy, calving-ease, and high-accuracy. These three sire groups were compared to calves born to cows bred using natural service. We found substantial production efficiency gains, carcass merit improvement, and economic value for calves of cows bred using a synchronized artificial insemination program with highaccuracy semen. The economic advantage of the high-accuracy sire group of calves was computed to be in the neighborhood of $40 to $80/head, relative to the natural service sire group of calves. |

This study used hedonic modeling to assess the marginal implicit value of bred heifer characteristics and of carcass characteristic expected progeny differences of bred heifer calves. Using data for 692 pens of Show-Me Replacement Heifers Inc. heifers marketed over the 2001 through 2004 period, we find heavier heifers are priced higher than lighter heifers, artificially inseminated heifer pens were premium priced, Angus animals received a premium, pens that are expected to calve at optimal period of the year and within a 30-day window received premiums, calf performance EPD birth weight was positive, only marbling carcass characteristic EPD was positive and significant, buyers prefer larger lots to smaller lots, buyers pay the highest price for lots sold... |

The product life cycle of the new value added marketing strategy that a quality heifer program created in adding, a new product (heifers with additional value characteristics) is explored. The new product that will be examined is related to the Show-Me Select Heifer Replacement program. The Tier II program has essentially created a new product (higher quality bred heifers) by using minimum EPD accuracies for calving ease along with expected calf and carcass performance measurements. The hedonic study shows that that the Tier II heifers receive a premium compared to traditional Show-Me-Select heifers. The first year Tier II heifers came on the market in 2008 they received a discount of $24 as compared to regular Show-Me-Select Heifers. However, the... |
