DYNAMIC ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF A RESIDUE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN COTTON AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Lohr, Luanne.
Residue management system (RMS), comprised of no till cultivation, a winter cover crop, and poultry litter, could be an alternative to existing management system in cotton production in the Georgian Piedmont. We compare the productivity and profitability of RMS with the current system over time, focusing on the role of organic matter. Using dynamic bioeconomic modelling technique, we show that the net return and land value difference between these two systems increase as the terminal period increases. We conclude that if financial and capital markets based on organic matter work efficiently, farmers will choose RMS in cotton production.

Rotational grazing adoption in cattle production under a cost-share agreement: does uncertainty have a role in conservation technology adoption? AgEcon
Kim, Seon-Ae; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Paudel, Krishna P..
Rotational grazing has been promoted as a best management practice with environmental benefits and associated higher revenue. Its adoption rate has been relatively low. This study investigates the role of uncertainty in the adoption of rotational grazing with a cost-share by cattle producers. Mail survey results indicate that 63–71 per cent of cattle producers are uncertain about adoption with a government cost-share. The study suggests that the possibility of uncertainty should be considered in cases where willingness-to-pay is elicited in the context of adoption of technology.

Awareness of and Application to the Environmental Quality Incentives Program By Cow–Calf Producers AgEcon
Obubuafo, Joyce; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Paudel, Krishna P.; Kim, Seon-Ae.
This study uses a bivariate probit model with partial observability to examine Louisiana beef producers’ awareness of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and how awareness translates to application to the program. Results indicate that awareness of and application to the EQIP depend on portion of income derived from off-farm sources, extent of previous best management practice adoption at one’s own expense, household income, farmed land that is highly erodible, contact with Natural Resource Conservation Service and extension service personnel, and producer age.

Reasons for Adopting Precision Farming: A Case Study of U.S. Cotton Farmers AgEcon
Pandit, Mahesh; Mishra, Ashok K.; Paudel, Krishna P.; Larkin, Sherry L.; Rejesus, Roderick M.; Lambert, Dayton M.; English, Burton C.; Larson, James A.; Velandia, Margarita M.; Roberts, Roland K.; Kotsiri, Sofia.
We used survey data collected from cotton farmers in 12 southern U.S. states to identify factors influencing cotton farmers’ decisions to adopt precision farming. Using a seemingly unrelated ordered probit model, we found that younger, educated and computer literate farmers chose precision farming for profit reason. Farmers who perceived precision farming to be profitable adopt it to be at the forefront of agricultural technology. We also found that farmers who were concerned with environment emphasize precision farming adoption as a reason to improve environmental quality. Our results also indicate that farmers in coastal states such as Alabama, Mississippi, and North Carolina chose environmental benefits as a reason for precision farming technology...

The Impact of Cholesterol Information on Meat Demand: Application of an Updated Cholesterol Index AgEcon
Adhikari, Murali; Paudel, Laxmi; Houston, Jack E.; Paudel, Krishna P.; Bukenya, James O..
We estimate an almost ideal-demand system (AIDS) to assess the impacts of cholesterol information on the market demand of meats in the U.S. Our study indicates a significant negative impact of cholesterol information on the market demand of beef and pork and a significant positive influence on chicken demand. The study further demonstrated that the flow of carbohydrate information lessened the magnitude of cholesterol health information elasticities.

Test of Convergence in Agricultural Factor Productivity: A Semiparametric Approach AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Pandit, Mahesh; Poudel, Biswo N..
We tested for club convergence in U.S. agricultural total factory productivity using a sigma convergence test. We used the same club of states as used by McCunn and Huffman as well as different states within 10 clubs identified by the cluster analysis. Results showed convergence was evident only in a few club groups. Clusters group identified using a statistical method identified only converging clubs. Variables affecting total factor productivity among states were identified using parametric, semiparametric and nonparametric methods. Semiparametric and nonparametric methods gave a better fit than a parametric method as indicated by the specification test. Our results indicated that health care expenditure, public research and extension investment, and...

Why Don't Farmers Adopt Precision Farming Technologies in Cotton Production? AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Pandit, Mahesh; Mishra, Ashok K.; Segarra, Eduardo.
We used the 2009 Southern Cotton Precision Farming Survey data collected from farmers in twelve U.S. states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia) to understand why farmers do not adopt seemingly profitable precision farming technology. Farmers provided cost, time constraint, satisfaction with the current practice and other as reasons for not adopting precision farming technology. Results from a multinomial logit regression model indicated that manure application on field, more formal education, larger farm size, participation in conservation easement or agricultural easement generally decreases the probability of nonadoption of precision agriculture in cotton...

Searching for an Environmental Kuznets Curve in Carbon Dioxide Pollutant in Latin American Countries AgEcon
Poudel, Biswo N.; Paudel, Krishna P.; Bhattarai, Keshav.
This study utilized a semiparametric panel model to estimate environmental Kuznets curves (EKC) for carbon dioxide (CO2) in 15 Latin American countries, using hitherto unused data on forestry acreage in each country. Results showed an N-shaped curve for the region; however, the shape of the curve is sensitive to the removal of some groups of countries. Specification tests support a semiparametric panel model over a parametric quadratic specification.

EFFECT OF RISK PERSPECTIVE ON FERTILIZER CHOICE BY SHARECROPPERS AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Lohr, Luanne; Martin, Neil R., Jr..
Peanut and corn are two major crops in the tri-state area of the Southeast US, an area encompassing North Florida, Southwest Georgia, and Southeast Alabama. Sharecroppers in this region apply higher amount of input in crop production than the average farmers. We analyzed the behavior of sharecroppers in this region with regard to their fertilizer application decisions. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested based on sharecroppers' fertilizer application decisions: one assuming that sharecroppers are risk averse farmers and the other assuming that sharecroppers are regret minimizers. Our results show that a sharecropper uses different fertilizer treatments when minimizing risk depending on risk perspective and desired income. Sharecroppers who apply...

An Evaluation of Factors Affecting the Choice of Coastal Recreational Activities AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Caffey, Rex H.; Devkota, Nirmala.
A visitor’s decision to use a particular recreational site is influenced by the individual’s taste as well as the characteristics of the site. For this reason, improved knowledge of the visitors’ interests and factors influencing their choices are vital for both planning and policy formulations in coastal development. This study examines visitor characteristics and desired site specific characteristics in order to determine the factors affecting use of the Louisiana coast for specific recreational purposes. We use a multinomial logit model and internet survey data to evaluate the factors affecting individuals’ decisions to visit coastal Louisiana for a specific use. Results suggest that the major variables affecting the choice of coastal recreational...

PRODUCTION TERMINATION AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO MITIGATE NUTRIENT POLLUTION AgEcon
Devkota, Nirmala; Paudel, Krishna P..
Nutrient runoff from agricultural land can be reduced through production termination to mitigate water pollution. The willingness to accept value to terminate the broiler production is evaluated using sample selection model. The result showed a positive relationship between the decision to participation and stated WTA value indicating the producers are willing to terminate the production but at high cost. The farmer’s perception about government role on water pollution, farm income, information and awareness about other pollution reduction alternatives play a major role on stated WTA amount as well as on participation decision.
