Phosphorus Fertilizing Effects of Biomass Ashes Organic Eprints
Schiemenz, Katja; Kern, Jürgen; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Bachmann, Silvia; Eichler-Löbermann, Bettina.
The reutilization of biomass ashes in agriculture is important to create nutrient cycles. In field and pot experiments we investigated the fertilizing effects of different biomass ashes for eight different crops on a loamy sand and sandy loam. Special emphasis was given to phosphours(P). The ashes showed large differences in their elemental composition.

Kurzfristige Auswirkungen des Pflugverzichts auf Collembolen- Gemeinschaften des Bodens Organic Eprints
Moos, Jan Hendrik; Schrader, Stefan; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
Collembolans, a widespread group of soil fauna, could potentially be used as indicators of management changes in (organic) farming systems. Therefore, we studied effects of reduced tillage compared with conventional tillage on collembolan communities in the short term. Results of a two-year field trial showed that collembolan communities are likely influenced by different tillage systems. However, these effects could not be statistically verified. Furthermore, annual variation seems to strongly influence the composition of collembolan communities. We tend to assign these effects to different crops cultivated during our study.

Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Schädlich, Olaf; Oppermann, Rainer.
Local oil mills, processing organic oilseeds solely, suffer competitive disad¬vantages by lower workloads due to low organic yields. Organic rapeseed oil as sub¬stitute for diesel fuel is not economically justifiable due to its high production costs and opportu-nity costs in the food market. Only organic sunflower oil or oil of false flax (Camelina sativa) grown in mixed cropping systems have produc¬tion costs comparable to con-ventional rapeseed oil. An ecobalance showed that false flax oil from mixed cropping systems as substitute for diesel has clear ecological advantages compared to oil from single cropped oilseeds. But the use of false flax as fuel in engines is still not proofed in science and technology.

Nährstoffgehalte ökologischer Wirtschaftsdünger Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Kratz, Sylvia; Schnug, Ewald.
Manure samples from 194 farms with organic livestock production were analysed for their macro- and micronutrient contents. Guidance values for N, P, K, Mg and S concen¬trations given for conventional systems are within the range of values ¬determined here for organic farms. However, they can only be used for first estimations in fertilization planning, since – as demonstrated by the presented data – nutrient contents may vary over a wide range. This was also the case for the micronutrient concentrations (B, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mo and Se). Fertilization with 1t/ha dry matter of ma¬nure with higher micronutrient concentrations can cover the demand of organically produced crops in nutrient balances. Micronutrients applied with fertilizers or in feed additives are...

Zusammensetzung von Wirtschaftsdüngern ökologischer und konventioneller Milchviehbetriebe im Rahmen des Projekts Klimawirkungen und Nachhaltigkeit von Landbausystemen Organic Eprints
Blank, Britta; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Kassow, Antje; Rahmann, Gerold; Aulrich, Karen.

Mixed cropping systems for biological control of weeds and pests in organic oilseed crops Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Schochow, Martin; Ulber, B; Kühne, Stefan; Rahmann, Gerold.
Agricultural advantages of mixed cropping are gained by biological effects like light competition, offering weed-suppressing capacities or by diversification of plant covers to break development cycles of pests. In a two-year project on mixed cropping with organic oilseed crops these effects were measured. It was found that weeds can be efficiently suppressed in organic linseed (Linum usitatissivum) in crop combinations with wheat (Triticum aestivum) or false flax (Camelina sativa). But linseed development was strictly limited. Also in organic pea production (Pisum sativum) the introduction of mixtures with the oil crop false flax led to a significant decrease of weed population. Either culture showed a balanced plant development. In winter rape (Brassica...

Analyse von Grundfutterqualitäten ökologischer und konventioneller Milchviehbetriebe im Rahmen des Projekts Klimawirkungen und Nachhaltigkeit von Landbausystemen Organic Eprints
Kassow, Antje; Blank, Britta; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Rahmann, Gerold; Aulrich, Karen.

DIFFERENCES IN FEEDING PRACTICES ON ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL DAIRY FARMS – DATA FROM A FARM NETWORK Organic Eprints
Warnecke, Sylvia; Schulz, Franziska; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Rahmann, Gerold.
Organic and conventional feeding practices of dairy cattle differ due to specific regulations that are in place for organic farming. E.g., dairy cows must have access to pasture, and soybean extract, a very common concentrate in conventional dairy feeding, may not be fed. The joint project “Climate Effects and Sustainability of Agricultural Systems – Analyses in a Network of Pilot Farms” determined feeding practices and feed qualities on a total of 44 dairy farms (22 organic and conventional, each) in four German regions for 2008, 2009 and 2010. The average diets of the dairy cows differed considerably between organic and conventional dairy farms. Organic farms with a high percentage of hay in the diet were found in East and South Germany. The low...

Mischfruchtanbausysteme mit Ölpflanzen im ökologischen Landbau 2. Ertragsstruktur des Mischfruchtanbaus von Lein (Linum ustitatissivum L.) mit Sommerweizen, Hafer oder Leindotter Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten.

Mineral nitrogen in the course of a cash crop and two livestock rotations - first results from the long-term monitoring Trenthorst Organic Eprints
Schaub, Dagmar; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Böhm, Herwart; Rahmann, Gerold.
The long-term monitoring Trenthorst, situated near Lübeck in a temperate maritime climate on loamy soils, was established in 2003 and compares two cash crop and three livestock farming systems. We studied the soil mineral nitrogen contents of one cash crop and two livestock farms, specialised in dairy cows and goats/oilseeds resp., with the hypothesis that the livestock farms show a more even course of Nmin in the rotation and a higher rotation mean. The rotation average of Nmin in the cash crop farm was not lower than the ones in the livestock farms. But in the course of the rotations differences became evident: compared to the livestock farms the cash crop farm showed higher Nmin-values after the first rotation year (mulched vs. cut grass clover) but...

Der Dauerbeobachtungsversuch Trenthorst - Konzeption und Versuchsaufbau Organic Eprints
Schaub, Dagmar; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Böhm, Herwart; Rahmann, Gerold.
Although the crop rotation is an essential element of organic farming, only few long-term trials exist which compare different crop rotations under temperate climate. The long-term monitoring Trenthorst was established in 2003 and comprises the different crop rotations of two cash crop farms and three livestock farms specialised in dairy, pigs and goats/oil seeds respectively. In addition to the comparison of crop rotations under practical farm conditions the long-term monitoring study aims to analyse the development of soil parameters, yields and crop qualities after the conversion to organic agriculture. On each arable field four monitoring points were established, where the relevant parameters are measured. The yields of the first three years are...

Eiweiß- und Aminosäurenversorgung in der Fütterung der Monogastrier im Ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Witten, Stephanie; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Weißmann, Friedrich; Bussemas, Ralf.

Wagner, Kathrin; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Hinterstoißer, P.; Warnecke, Sylvia; Schüler, Maximilian; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
Grazing provides livestock better opportunities to act out their species specific behaviour compared to the restrictive stable conditions. Studies on the effect of grazing on animal welfare in dairy farming in Germany are rare and have not been conducted under the specific conditions of organic dairy farming. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of grazing on animal welfare of dairy cows in organic and conventional farming based on the Welfare Quality® protocol for dairy cattle. In this paper, we present the initial evaluation of a comparison between zero grazing and summer grazing. The first results indicate an improvement in most welfare principles during the summer months for dairy cows with summer grazing, except for between...

Relevance of mycotoxins to product quality and animal health in organic farming Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Weißmann, Friedrich.
Organic farming is not generally more endangered by the risk of contamination of the products with mycotoxins than other farming systems. Knowledge about the influence of litter beddings on mycotoxin exposure of livestock is rare. Due to restrictions on silage additives and fungicides, organic farms are limited in their possibilities to prevent and to cure fungal diseases. But the organic production system offers several important factors for lowering infections with mycotoxin producing fungi.

Kramer, 1995).

Hinterstoißer, P.; Schulz, Franz; Schüler, Maximilian; Wagner, Kathrin; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
For reasons of animal health, milk yield and for environmental issues an optimal supply of protein and energy for dairy cows is essential. The aim of this study is to examine potential protein and energy malnutrition and surplus in dairy herds. We present a comparison of the protein and energy supply between 18 conventional and 16 organic dairy herds. Initial results indicate an undersupply on energy in the first one hundred days of lactation in both the organic and conventional feeding regimes. It is easier to provide an adequate protein supply in conventional conditions in the first one hundred days than in organic ones. A balanced supply is guaranteed for a mere 21,3 % of the organic cows. In the second one hundred days this increases to 26,5 %,...
