| During the world tour of R/V Jean Charcot , 2 types of polymetalic deposits have been investigated: the cobalt-rich crusts in the Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia) and the manganese nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone. In the South Pacific Ocean, a genetic model of site bearing cobalt-rich crusts has been identified: the polymetallic deposits are located at a 1,000 m water depth on a subsident fossil atoll built on a volcanic substrate. In the North Pacific Ocean, a 2 months cruise has been conducted on the basis of preexisting data (seabeam, bottom photographs, nodules and sediment sampling). Three types of geological environment have been characterized: a sedimentary plateau, an area particularly representative of the abyssals hills... |

| New bathymetric, geologic and geophysical data obtained during the R.V. Jean Charcot Transmerou cruise in the northern Red Sea lead to a regional synthesis of the geology of this segment. Detailed surveys of the Mabahiss Deep (near 25 degree 20N) Shaban Deep (Jean Charcot near 26 degree 13N) and the Red Sea-Aqaba Suez, triple junction were made during the cruise. Ship's tracks of Transmerou are represented. |

| We use observations from the 1985 R.V. Charcot Nanhai Cruise to document NW-SE spreading in the 150-200 km wide region of the South China Sea (SCS), along the 1000 km long axial ridge. The data include Seabeam and single channel seismic profiles, completed by magnetic and gravity anomalies. Two detailed surveyed boxes were performed on both sides of the ridge to illustrate the structural fabric. A fine scale structural survey of the flank of a seamount with a side-scan sonar is also presented, as well as dredges and cores results. |
