Spatial and temporal distribution of reef fish spawning aggregations in the Seychelles – an interview-based survey of artisanal fishers OceanDocs
Öhman, M.C.; Isidore, M.; Payet, R.J.; Robinson, J.; Marguerite, M.A..
Many coral reef fish species aggregate at specific times and locations for the purpose of spawning. This study examined the spatial and temporal distribution of spawning aggregations in the Seychelles. An interview-based survey of the principal stakeholders, mainly artisanal fishers, yielded 89 reports of aggregation fishing for 26 demersal and semi-pelagic fish species. Grouper aggregations were largely concentrated in the outer coralline islands of the exclusive economic zone, whilst those of snappers and rabbitfishes were mainly reported from locations on the Seychelles Bank. The spatial patterns among fish families were attributed to a combination of differences in species abundance and distribution as well as variation in fishing effort. Spawning...

Net fishing and its management in Seychelles OceanDocs
Payet, R.J..
Net fishing is an important component of the artisanal fishery of the Seychelles. It is composed of beach seine, encircling and set gillnets. This report reviews net fishery and its impact on the environment and fish stocks and provides a framework for its management. There are no current management measures for the traditional net fisheries except that all nets above 50 metres requires a license with a lead seal bearing the licence number. Certain irresponsible uses of these nets have ben acknowledged, principally the 'Met outaz' fishing strategy, incidental catch of marine mammals and the presence of commercially important juvenile fish in the beach seine fishery. SFA has addresses these issues rationally and management options are explored followed by...

Spiny lobster fishery on the Mahe Plateau : November 2001 - January 2002 OceanDocs
Payet, R.J.; Isidore, M..
The present report reviews the spiny lobster fishery on the Mahe Plateau for the 2001/2002 fishing season. The monitoring programme, set up in 1992, was continued this season to collect more information on the spiny lobster stock in order to improve and maintain proper management of this resource around the Mahe Plateau. For the 2001/2002 lobster fishing season, a total of 40 licenses were issued namely twenty seven on Mahe, five on Praslin and eight on La Digue. Similar to previous seasons, the most frequently used lobster fishing technique was snorkelling which involved 32 fishing units, whilst only four units used the trap method and one used both snorkelling and trap. For this three-month fishing season, a total of 5.5 tonnes of spiny lobsters were...

Artisanal fishing boats in Seychelles OceanDocs
Payet, R.J..
The results of a census of fishing boats on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue are presented. In total 437 boats were counted of which 278 were outboards with engine, 48 were open whaler, 35 were pirogues, 25 were lekonomi, 22 were schooners, 11 were semi-industrial so were lavenir, 12 were 'others', 8 were whaler with deck, 4 were nouvo lavenir and 3 were wooden boats without engines. The details are discussed to understand the characteristics of the artisanal fishing boats. An analysis of the historical data follows. The number of pirogues and schooners decreased from 1985 to 1995, whilst the numbers of whalers have increased. Outboards on the other hand had remained relatively stable. The changes in the number of boats are a result of interaction between the...
