Wheat trials - How reliably do wheat varieties perform under different organic farming conditions? Organic Eprints

A major obstacle in the development of organic farming in the UK is the central problem of winter wheat production. At present, there is a substantial gap between the supply of home-grown organic milling wheat and demand, partially due to shortfalls in both wheat yield and quality. Progress is being made in organic wheat breeding programmes across Europe, although the varieties arising from these are not widely available in the UK. A crucial and unanswered question is how reliably varieties will perform under the diverse conditions that prevail on organic farms. Wheat trial results reported here indicate that the main effects of variety, location, year, or farming practice may often be more important than the complex interactions among these factors....

Field trials were conducted for three years on an organic farm in England to assess the performance and yield variability of two synthetic sprouting broccoli populations with 4 or 8 parents respectively, along with the original landrace mother plants and a commercial F1 hybrid variety as control (Santée). In terms of total yield, Santée outperformed the other entries, but for some other traits, e.g. heading time and number of sprouts, Santée was comparable with the mean of one or more of the genetically diverse entries. Analysis of yield variability over time showed mixed results. The ecosystem services provided by the organisms within the environment include, for example, nutrient cycling, pest regulation and pollination, to name but a few. Legume-based leys offer multiple benefits to ecosystem service provision, e.g. protecting soil and supporting pollinators. While weeds can play an antagonistic role during ley establishment, little is known about weed communities in these leys or about the optimal solutions for weed control in the establishment phase. To determine if the choice of ley species affects weed levels, we conducted field trials at six locations in the UK, measuring weed cover and biomass in monoculture plots of 12 legume and 4 grass species, plus an all species mix over two years. Applications of crop competitive ability in winter oats (Avena sativa L.) Organic Eprints

Crop competition is a key component of an integrated approach to weed management. Variation in competitive ability and competitive traits have been identified in many other crop species, however little work has been done on oats. Trials were carried out over four years at one organic site with five husked and three naked oat varieties. Mid-season Leaf Area Index (LAI) and tillering ability were identified as weed suppressive traits using path analysis. Differences in weed tolerance were found among varieties. Trade-offs may exist between competitive traits and yield potential which could be optimised by limiting competitive traits later in the season. The items reports on first year trials in of the “Quoats” project. It’s well known that oats are generally a good fit in organic rotations and the “Quoats” project – Harnessing new technologies for sustainable oat production and utilisation – aims to make them even better. This five year (2009 – 2014) research project, led by IBERS, Aberystwyth University, brings together a wide range of organisations in the supply chain, from breeders to end-users, to improve the quality and performance of oats. As part of the project, ORC is carrying out field trials to assess the suitability of new oat lines for organic management systems, with particular emphasis on nutrient use efficiency.
