A step toward the definition of ecological indicators of the impact of fishing on the fish assemblage of the Abore reef reserve (New Caledonia) ArchiMer
Amand, Marion; Pelletier, Dominique; Ferrari, Jocelyne; Kulbicki, Michel.
Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are often contemplated as a tool for the sustainable management of exploited resources and ecosystem conservation. This paper proposes an approach to establish a statistical diagnostic of the effects of MPAs on fish assemblages, and define corresponding ecological indicators. This requires choosing relevant variables (abundance, diversity, demographic parameters..) and appropriate statistical methods. The study was based on data from the Abore reef Reserve in New Caledonia. Two sets of methods: 1-inferential linear models (ANOVA, GLM): 2- Partial Least Squares (PLS) methods of regression, were used to test the effects of this MPA. PLS enabled us to test simultaneously within a model, density, species richness, biomass and mean...

Spearfishing Regulation Benefits Artisanal Fisheries: The ReGS Indicator and Its Application to a Multiple-Use Mediterranean Marine Protected Area ArchiMer
Rocklin, Delphine; Tomasini, Jean-antoine; Culioli, Jean-michel; Pelletier, Dominique; Mouillot, David.
The development of fishing efficiency coupled with an increase of fishing effort led to the overexploitation of numerous natural marine resources. In addition to this commercial pressure, the impact of recreational activities on fish assemblages remains barely known. Here we examined the impact of spearfishing limitation on resources in a marine protected area (MPA) and the benefit it provides for the local artisanal fishery through the use of a novel indicator. We analysed trends in the fish assemblage composition using artisanal fisheries data collected in the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve (BSNR), a Mediterranean MPA where the spearfishing activity has been forbidden over 15% of its area. Fish species were pooled into three response groups according...

For the first time ever at such a spatial scale, the EPICURE project is using the complementary exosystemic, functional and fisheries approaches to analyze and compare the partially exploited fish‐populating structure of the Geyser, Zélée, and Iris banks. This project focuses on three main points, which are 1) a habitat map of the three banks and an assessment of the live coral coverage as a proxy of the Geyser bank’s health, 2) a description of fish assemblages and a functional analysis relative to habitat type and time and 3) an estimate of the abundance index in structure size of the main exploited stocks. Overall, 42 habitats over 268 km² were mapped on the Geyser bank with 534 field verifications. On the Zélée bank, 24 habitats were mapped over 183...

Designing indicators for assessing the effects of marine protected areas on coral reef ecosystems: A multidisciplinary standpoint ArchiMer
Pelletier, Dominique; Garcia Charton, Jose; Ferraris, Jocelyne; David, Gilbert; Thebaud, Olivier; Letourneur, Yves; Claudet, Joachim; Amand, Marion; Kulbicki, Michel; Galzin, René.
The present paper aims at identifying and assessing indicators of the effects of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in coral reef regions, based on a bibliography review in ecology, economics and social sciences. First the various effects Studied within each of these domains and the variables used to measure them were censused. Potential ecological indicators were assessed through their link with the question used (here termed "relevance") and their "effectiveness" which encompasses the issues of precision, accuracy and statistical power. Relevance and effectiveness were respectively measured by the frequency of use of each indicator and the proportion of significant results in the reviewed articles. For social and economic effects, the approach was not...

Changes in the catch composition of artisanal fisheries attributable to dolphin depredation in a Mediterranean marine reserve ArchiMer
Rocklin, Delphine; Santoni, Marie-catherine; Culioli, Jean-michel; Tomasini, Jean-antoine; Pelletier, Dominique; Mouillot, David.
There is increasing evidence from previous studies, and from fishers' observations, that coastal dolphins use fishing nets as an easily accessible feeding source, damaging or depredating fish caught in the nets. This study investigates the impact of dolphin depredation on artisanal trammelnets by analysing the catch composition of 614 artisanal fishing operations in the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve (France). Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) attacked, on average, 12.4% of the nets and damaged 8.3% of the catch. However, attacked nets were characterized by statistically significantly higher catch per unit effort than unattacked ones. Catch composition also differed significantly after dolphin attacks; bentho-pelagic fish were more...

Combining sensitivity and uncertainty analysis to evaluate the impact of management measures with ISIS-Fish: marine protected areas for the Bay of Biscay anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) fishery ArchiMer
Lehuta, Sigrid; Mahevas, Stephanie; Petitgas, Pierre; Pelletier, Dominique.
Spatio-seasonal explicit simulation models can predict the impact of spatial management measures on marine fish populations and fishing activities. As fisheries are complex systems, fisheries simulation models are often complex, with many uncertain parameters. Here, the methodology is provided to deliver fishery diagnostics within an uncertainty context using a complex simulation tool. A sensitivity analysis of the model is performed on model outputs using partial least-squares to identify the most sensitive parameters. The impact of several management measures is then simulated using a statistical simulation design taking into account the uncertainty of the selected sensitive parameters. This approach was applied to the Bay of Biscay anchovy stock using...

Validity of Escherichia coli, enterovirus, and F-specific RNA bacteriophages as indicators of viral shellfish contamination ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Le Guyader, Soizick; Pelletier, Dominique; Haugarreau, Larissa; Caprais, Marie-paule; Pommepuy, Monique.
The sanitary classification of harvesting areas for bivalve mollusks in France is based on the level of Escherichia Coli contamination detected in shellfish meat, as defined in EC Directive 91/492 EEC. However, outbreaks of gastroenteritis or hepatitis after consumption of shellfish meeting current bacteriological standards suggest that E. coli is a poor indicator of viral contamination. The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of enterovirus and F-specific RNA bacteriophages as new indicators of human enteric viruses. Shellfish were sampled over a 37-mo period to characterize microbial contamination in two coastal areas subjected to different sewage contamination inputs. Contamination by E. coli, F-specific RNA bacteriophages (F+ RNA) and...

Assessing the impact of different management options using ISIS-Fish*: the French Merluccius merluccius Nephrops norvegicus mixed fishery of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Drouineau, Hilaire; Mahevas, Stephanie; Pelletier, Dominique; Beliaeff, Benoit.
In this paper, we present an approach to compare the impact of different management options oil the dynamics of a mixed fishery. We used ISIS-Fish, a simulation tool aimed at evaluating the impact of spatial and seasonal management measures on the dynamics of mixed fisheries. The French Nephrops norvegicus (Norway lobster) Merluccius merluccius (hake) mixed fishery of the Bay of Biscay was chosen as a Study case. First, we parameterised the Population and exploitation models. We then selected several management measures, including marine protected fishermen's reaction to each measure. Then, a sensitivity analysis (MPAs) and total allowable catches (TAC), and parameterised fish sensitivity analysis was performed according to a fractional factorial...

Towards multidisciplinary indicator dashboards for coral reef fisheries management ArchiMer

The diversity of reef ecosystems, the multiplicity of reef resource uses and the breadth of the range of the island socio-cultural contexts concerned make coral reef fisheries (CRF) management in the South Pacific a complex task. The health and state of the targeted resources depend both on ecosystem characteristics (as determined by ecological and biological factors) and on fishing pressure, whose effects are only partly known. Increasing harvests from commercial and recreational fishing increasingly overlap with traditional Subsistence activity, creating an important CRF management challenge. This paper presents a new approach to CRF assessment and monitoring by providing a set of multidisciplinary indicators. The fisheries system is assessed from three...

Aerial and snorkelling census techniques for estimating green turtle abundance on foraging areas: A pilot study in Mayotte Island (Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Roos, David; Pelletier, Dominique; Ciccione, Stéphane; Taquet, Marc; Hughes, George.
Monitoring the abundance of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) is necessary to assess population trends and risks of collapse. This note presents a study aimed at comparing three techniques for the direct estimation of green turtle numbers in their foraging habitats (seagrass beds and reef flats). The experiment was carried out at Mayotte Island, Western Indian Ocean. The techniques involved were surveys by snorkel, and aerial surveys using a microlight aircraft and a paramotor. Each technique had shortcomings and advantages. While each technique provided estimations of turtle numbers only surveys by snorkel permitted identification of species and sex, whenever visibility and turtle behaviour permitted. Along the shorelines, and over foraging areas, the...

Oceanic survival and movements of wild and captive-reared immature green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Pelletier, Dominique; Roos, David; Ciccione, Stéphane.
The ability of captive-reared turtles to survive in the wild is not precisely known, nor are movements of immature turtles in the open ocean. To provide information on these issues, a satellite tracking experiment was conducted in the western Indian Ocean to monitor oceanic movements of immature green turtles. Two wild turtles and four captive-reared individuals were tracked. The latter had been displaced after birth from nesting sites to a distant rearing site. Wild turtles survived after release, but did not move far away from release site. We hypothesize that this resident behaviour may be explained by stage-specific habitat requirements. Captive-reared turtles survived after release and migrated over thousands of kilometres. Among these, the oldest...

Fishers' perceptions as indicators of the performance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) ArchiMer
Leleu, Kevin; Alban, Frederique; Pelletier, Dominique; Charbonnel, Eric; Letourneur, Yves; Boudouresque, Charles F..
How users perceive the performance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is fundamental for the social acceptance of these zones. Moreover, their perceptions may be relevant for monitoring the effects of MPAs on extractive activities. This study analyzes artisanal fishers' perceptions of the performance of a north-western Mediterranean coastal MPA, which encompasses two no-take zones (NTZs). Three viewpoints have been considered: the effect on the personal activity of fishers, the effect on the local fishery and the effect on the ecosystem. In order to test the hypothesis that biomass export (spillover) - which had previously been evidenced from the two NTZs - may influence fishers' perceptions of NTZ effects, fishers' perceptions were compared with both...
