| The number of small commodity livestock slaughter plants in the Upper Northern Plains region continues to decline. Significant factors contributing to this decline include: 1) pressure to consolidate, thereby capturing economies of scale; 2) relatively stringent federal inspection specifications, along with; 3) HACCP (Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Points) requirements. At the same time, consumer demand (markets) for specialty, selected, and exotic meats appears to be growing. | Canadian exports of beef and live cattle to the United States have increased significantly since the late 1980s. Hog exports have increased since the mid-1990s. Major factors affecting exports of beef, pork, cattle, and hogs from Canada to the United States include the exchange rate, increased Canadian production, U.S.-Canada price differentials, and trade liberalization under the Canada - United States Free Trade Agreement (CUSTA) of 1989. Increased Canadian exports have resulted in small but significant reductions in U.S. domestic prices of beef, pork, and hogs. |

| Interest in the feasibility of a cooperatively owned large-scale hog farrowing system has been shown by hog producers in North Dakota. The producers realize the problems in securing a continuous supply of disease free feeder pigs of uniform quality during fluctuating price periods. Lack of published data concerning large-scale farrowing systems makes decisions regarding the feasibility and negotiation with lending institutions difficult.
