Data-Recording System and Sampling Strategy in the Western Indian Ocean Purse-Seine Fishery OceanDocs
Thomas, A.; Dufour, O.; Pianet, R.; Morón, J..
The present data-recording system used in the Seychelles to compile the tuna purse-seine statistics in the WIO was established by ORSTOM at the beginning of the fishery (1982/3) for the French fleet, and then extended to the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) and Madagascar in 1991-92 for all fleets. After several modifications, it has been working efficiently for the last ten years, making it possible to build a very comprehensive tuna database for the purse-seine fleets since the beginning of the fishery. The extension to Madagascar started in 1992, within the framework of the Regional Tuna Project. A specific laboratory, the(Unité Statistique Thonière d’Antsiranana (USTA) was installed, the work being done in collaboration between ORSTOM, the Direction...

Which tuna research in Indian Ocean? OceanDocs
Fonteneau, A.; Marsac, F.; Pianet, R.; Stequert, B..
This document attempts to develop an overview of the future needs for tuna research that should be recommended by the IOTC. Because of the spectacular increase of the tuna catches in the Indian Ocean during the last 15 years, it is necessary to conduct active research on the major stocks, giving a high priority to all research that will allow a reliable assessment of the stock status. A general problem in the tuna research conducted in the Indian Ocean is the lack of large-scale tagging programs. Such programs should be a priority in future Indian Ocean tuna research. Other research should also be conducted simultaneously upon various biological parameters which are fundamental to stock assessment. The fishery associated with artificial floating objects,...

Statistiques De La Pêcherie Thonière Fis Durant La Période 1991 - 2001 OceanDocs
N’Goran Ya, N.; Norström, V.; Diouf, T.; Pianet, R.; Hervé, A..

General statistics of the French purse-seine fishery in the Indian Ocean OceanDocs
Pianet, R..
This document presents a brief summary of the main general French purse-seiners activities in the Indian Ocean since the beginning of their fishery in 1981: catch by species and fishing type (log and free swimming schools), effort and sampling for sizes and species composition. The description of statistics gathering, sampling and processing procedures are reported in a specific document presented at the meeting (WPDCS/99/09).

Statistics of the purse seine NEI fleet in the Indian Ocean. OceanDocs
Pallares, P.; Delgado de Molina, A.; Pianet, R.; Ariz, J..
This document contains summary statistics of the NEI4 purse seiner fleet fishing in the Indian Ocean, as well as some information about how the data are collected. The sampling scheme, the sampling coverage, maps and diagrams representing the fishing pattern of this fleet by time and area strata. Data collection and the sampling programme for this fleet are the same as those used for the Spanish and French purse seine fleets. 'Research Group' Instituto Espanol de Oceanografia. The French tropical purse-seine fishery, 1981-1997, with special emphasis on 1995-1997 OceanDocs
Pianet, R..
France has been one of the main fishing nations using industrial purse seiners in the Indian Ocean since the beginning of this fishery in the early 1980s. Its fleet operates over a wide area, covering the western side of the Indian Ocean, and centred around the Seychelles Islands. Catches are either transhipped to reefers in Victoria (Seychelles) and Antsiranana (Madagascar) or delivered to local canneries.

New Sampling and Data Processing Strategy for Estimating the Composition of Catches by Species and Sizes in the European Purse Seine Tropical Tuna Fisheries OceanDocs
Pianet, R.; Pallares, P.; Petit, Ch..
The difficulties associated with tropical tuna sampling strategies, particularly those resulting from the large-scale adoption of the method of fishing on logs, have caused the Indian Ocean tuna scientists concern since the beginning of the purse seine fishery, as well as the ICCAT SCRS (Standing Committee for Research and Statistics of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) in recent years. Upon the recommendation of this Committee, in 1996 Spain and France embarked on a European Union project aiming to study the consequences of this new fishing tactic on the estimated catch by species and by size, and to implement a new sampling strategy so as to improve the accuracy of the statistics. Many specific analyses have been...
