Sur deux Echinogammarus limniques nouveaux du Bassin d’Aquitaine Naturalis
Pinkster, S.; Stock, J.H..
Description of Echinogammarus spinulicornis nov. spec., closely related to E. pungens (H. Milne Edwards), and of Echinogammarus zebrinus nov. spec., a member of the E. berilloni-group, from streams in the Basin of Aquitaine, southwestern France.

Upstream and downstream migrations in relation to the reproductive cycle and to environmental factors in the amphipod, Gammarus zaddachi Naturalis
Dennert, H.G.; Dennert, A.L.; Kant, P.; Pinkster, S.; Stock, J.H..
1. The real identity has been studied of juvenile gammarids, that were found in the fresh-water tidal region of the River Slack (France), 3 to 4 km inland of the mouth of its estuary. At the outset, these juveniles were (on basis of their morphology) considered to belong to Gammarus salinus. 2. Rearing demonstrated that the juveniles in question developed into adult Gammarus zaddachi. This indicates that the morphological criteria used in discriminating between G. salinus and G. zaddachi fail in juvenile material. Several morphological criteria are discussed and tested. It appears that a 100% certain key character does not exist, meaning that it is not possible to identify with absolute certainty all individuals in mixed populations of the two species. 3....

Members of the Echinogammarus simoni-group and the genus Eulimnogammarus (Crustacea – Amphipoda) from the Iberian peninsula and North Africa, with description of a new species Naturalis
Pinkster, S.; Stock, J.H..
Systematic sampling proved that members of the Echinogammarus Simonigroup are the dominant freshwater amphipods in the southern half of the Iberian peninsula. It became clear, that the presence (as recorded in literature) of E. simoni in the system of the river Duero was due to confusion with members of the genus Eulimnogammarus. The systematical position of the simoni – group within the genus Echinogammarus is discussed and comparative descriptions of all the members of this group are given, along with a key for their identification. Where possible, notes are given on the variability and ecology of the different species.

Range extension in 1966 of the alien amphipod, Gammarus tigrinus Sexton, 1939, in the Netherlands Naturalis
Pinkster, S.; Stock, J.H..
The range extension of Gammarus tigrinus Sexton, 1939 (an amphipod recently introduced in the Netherlands), during the year of 1966, is recorded. New areas invaded are the southern part of the province of North-Holland, the greater part of the province of Friesland, and the polder Oostelijk Flevoland.

The migration of two sympatric gammarid species in a French estuary Naturalis
Girisch, H.B.; Dieleman, J.C.; Petersen, G.W.; Pinkster, S..
1. The migration of two sympatric estuarine species has been studied over a period of one year in the estuary of the river Dourduff, a small river draining into the Bay of Morlaix (Brittany, France). One species, Gammarus zaddachi, is a boreal species and the other, Gammarus chevreuxi, is a lusitanian species. Both species live near the limits of their distribution area. 2. Both species show a migration pattern with an anadromous and a catadromous phase. The migration is an active process. The animals use the tidal movements for their upstream and downstream migration. 3. Migration activities of both species show a diurnal rhythm, the activity peak occurring at night. 4. Downriver migration of both species can be observed throughout the whole year....

Western European species of the presumed Baikal-genus Eulimnogammarus (Crustacea – Amphipoda), with description of a new species from Spain Naturalis
Pinkster, S.; Stock, J.H..

On three new species of Echinogammarus, related to E.veneris (Heller, 1865), from Italy and Switzerland (Crustacea, Amphipoda) Naturalis
Pinkster, S.; Stock, J.H..
Description of three freshwater species of Echinogammarus, viz. E. fluminenis n.sp. (from northern Italy and southern Switzerland), E. ruffoi n.sp. (from northern Italy), and E. libaldii (from central Italy). New records and some notes on the morphology of E. veneris (Heller) in Italy are provided. A table summarizes the salient morphological differences between these closely related species and E. pungens (H. Milne Edwards).

Harpacticoid copepods living in wood infested by Limnoria from France Naturalis
Pinkster, S..
Five species of harpacticoid copepods are recorded as associates of wood-boring gribbles of the genus Limnoria, in French coastal waters. Two of these species, both belonging to the genus Tisbe, are new to science. With three of the species rearing experiments have been done in order to determine what kind of relation exists between them and Limnoria tripunctata Menzies.

A new Echinogammarus of the berilloni – group E. Aquilifer nov.sp., from the Pyrenees (Crustacea, Amphipoda) Naturalis
Pinkster, S..
During a short trip in the western part of the Pyrenees in August 1968 many samples of Gammaridae were collected both on the French and Spanish slopes of this mountain chain. Most of the specimens collected appeared to belong to the species Echinogammarus berilloni (Catta, 1878), or to closely related forms, but likewise it became clear that there exists a great morphological diversity in this group ofE. berilloni. This diversity, often called variability, was noticed already by Spandl ( 1926 ) and Margalef ( 1956 ) and made a more detailed study desirable. A great difficulty is the absence of a good and detailed description and trustworthy figures ofE. berilloni. The following published figures may serve as a basis for recognition of this species : Catta,...

The problem of European freshwater populations of Gammarus duebeni Liljeborg, 1852 Naturalis
Pinkster, S.; Dennert, A.L.; Stock, B.; Stock, J.H..
In addition to the well-known freshwater occurrence of Gammarus duebeni in the inland of Ireland, a similar inland occurrence in the western part of Brittany (= Bretagne, France) is demonstrated. In Brittany, as in Ireland, G. duebeni occurs in waters with low sodium concentrations (often less than 23 mg/l), whereas elsewhere in its range, G. duebeni lives in waters with a raised sodium content (either in mixohaline waters, or in “fresh” waters loaded with salts through gales from sea). Reid has proposed the designation G. duebeni α for the Irish freshwater form, G. duebeni ß for the brackish water form. The subdivision of G. duebeni is strongly reinforced by the findings of Sutcliffe et al., indicating physiological differences between the α and ß form....

Les Amphipodes du genre Gammarus dans le Bassin d’Arcachon Naturalis
Labourg, P.J.; Pinkster, S.; Stock, J.H..
Five species of the genus Gammarus have been found in and around the Basin of Arcachon (southwestern France). Short notes on the autecology of these species are given. Literature records of G. duebeni and of G. aequicauda from the Basin rest on confusion with other species, as is proved by re-examination of the original material and by renewed sampling on the localities mentioned in the literature.
