| This note examines the implications of permitting producers to trade wheat amongst themselves. The outcome, in efficiency terms, is identical to that achieved with transferable quotas. For some producers, there may be advantages in product trading that are not available in transferable quotas. |

| This paper discusses the use of sub-optimal programming techniques in farm management. The scope for employing such techniques to derive farm plans which more closely conform to farmers' real objectives and preferences is reviewed. | Economics of size is an important but relatively neglected aspect of Australian agriculture. The theory and methodology for analysis of economics of size are summarized and a survey made of evidence for Australian agricultural industries. The conclusion is reached that economies of size exist, particularly for small to medium farms and diseconomies appear to be absent. Further research is needed and some important areas are indicated. |

| Over recent years there has been marked instability in incomes earned from farming. The instability, which affects the economy generally, is transmitted partly through the consumption spending of farmers. A conventional view of the short-run marginal propensity to consume of farmers, supported by some analyses of aggregate data, is that it is zero. It is argued that this view is implausible on theoretical grounds, that the analysis giving rise to this view used aggregate data which contained serious flaws, and that evidence from micro-studies and other macro level analyses present a more realistic assessment that the short-run mpc of farmers is not zero but likely to be lower than that of non-farmers. | An assessment is presented of the costs and benefits of a scheme in the New England region of New South Wales for the control of footrot in sheep. An ex post evaluation is presented of the operation of the scheme since its inception in 1960 to the present, and also an ex ante appraisal is made of the proposed continuation of the scheme in the future. Data were collected from the implementing agencies and from samples of sheep farmers in the target area and in another area where the disease is endemic. Some coefficients not otherwise available were estimated by a panel of experts by use of a Delphi procedure. Net benefits from the scheme were estimated directly as producers' surpluses less administrative costs, assuming no effects on output prices.... |

| The way in which the consumption of farm families is adjusted to fluctuations in income has important implications at the national, regional and farm levels. In this paper, hypotheses about the consumption of farm families are examined using data from 16 families in a wheat-sheep region of New South Wales for the eight-year period 1968/69 to 1975/76. The results of the study indicate that lagged effects are important in explaining consumption by farm households. It was not possible to partition these lag effects between partial adjustment and normal income influences. Estimates of the short-run (one-year) marginal propensity to consume (mpc) were quite low, ranging from 0.13 to 0.16. The best estimates of the long-run mpc ranged from 0.19 to 0.25. |
