Craniometric Study of Nasal Bones and Frontal Processes of Maxilla International Journal of Morphology
Costa,Jecilene Rosana; Prates,José Carlos; de Castilho,Helton Traber; Santos,Rafael de Almeida.
Knowing the anatomy of the nasal framework and its components, as well as their relations of size and shape is essential to correctly and safely perform nasal surgery, such as rhinoplasty. Symmetry and proportion of nasal bones and frontal processes of the maxilla related to patient's skull shape is not yet well established. Variation of these proportions due to differences in skull shape may interfere in the results of rhinoplasty, leading to poor aesthetic results and postoperative complications. This paper's objective is to measure and evaluate differences in shape and size of bony components of nasal framework (nasal bones and frontal process of maxilla) among different classes of skull shape. 121 skulls from UNIFESP-EPM Anatomy Museum, filed with...

CHORDAE TENDINEAE ARCHITECTURE IN THE PAPILLARY MUSCLE INSERTION International Journal of Morphology
Wang Gusukuma,Luciana; Prates,José Carlos; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
Chordae tendineae architecture and their junction with papillary muscle were studied with scanning electron microscopy, comparing human and swine hearts. Papillary muscles with the corresponding chordae tendineae were obtained from human and pig (Sus scrofa) hearts after exposition of the left ventricle cavity, fixed with 4% formaldehyde. The specimens were sectioned in small samples and divided in four groups, a control one and the others submitted to digestion in a solution of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite in saline solution during 5, 10 and 15 minutes respectively. The specimens were washed and fixed in 1% osmium tetroxide in cacodylate buffer, kept in 1% tannic acid for 30 minutes, dehydrated and critical point dried, mounted and sputtered with gold. The...

Anatomy and Variations of the Celiac Trunk International Journal of Morphology
Petrella,Selma; Rodriguez,Celio Fernando de Sousa; Sgrott,Emerson Alexandre; Fernandes,Geraldo José Medeiros; Marques,Sergio Ricardo; Prates,José Carlos.
The aim of this study was to analyze anatomy of the celiac trunk through its diameter, length, emission and variation of its branches. Sixty-nine cadavers fixed in 10% formalin solution were dissected in the anatomy laboratories of the Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP/EPM), Lusiadas of Santos University (UNILUS) and Santo Amaro University (UNISA) and 20 non-fixed cadavers from Death Verification Services, of the Sao Paulo University (USP) and Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP/EPM). Dissection of the trunk celiac of these cadavers was performed after opening of the peritoneal cavity. The obtained results allowed us to conclude the following: 1) Mensuration of the length from the celiac trunk up to its first branch, the left gastric and/or...

Relationship of the Celiac Trunk with Median Arcuate Ligament of the Diaphragm International Journal of Morphology
Petrella,Selma; Rodriguez,Celio Fernando de Sousa; Sgrott,Emerson Alexandre; Fernandes,Geraldo José Medeiros; Marques,Sergio Ricardo; Prates,José Carlos.
In the present study different positions of the median arcuate ligament in relation to the celiac trunk as well as measurements of overlap and distance, also the approach between the two structures were investigated. In addition histological studies of the diaphragm crura and the median arcuate ligament were performed. Sixty-three cadavers fixed in formalin 10% aqueous solution and 20 non-fixed adult cadavers of both sexes were studied. Dissections of the celiac trunk were performed after dissection of the peritoneal cavity in the laboratories of the Anatomy Division of the UNIFESP-EPM, UNILUS and UNISA, and during necropsies in the City Morgue of the UNIFESP-EPM and USP. Regarding morphological analysis under light microscopy, three non-fixed cadavers...

Anatomical Variation of the Brachiocephalic Trunk and Common Carotid Artery in Neck Dissection International Journal of Morphology
Iterezote,Ana Maria; Medeiros,Alisson Dantas de; Barbosa Filho,Rômulo César Costa; Petrella,Selma; Andrade Junior,Luiz Carlos de; Marques,Sergio Ricardo; Prates,José Carlos.
Variations in the trajectory of the brachiocephalic trunk and the common carotid artery predispose to disorders which might be critical in a tracheotomy and/or surgeries. Dissection of 110 formol fixed adult cadavers, both sexes, were performed to increase the anatomic knowledge of the neck vessels and its variations. Cadavers were from the Laboratory of Descriptive and Topographic Anatomy of the Federal University of São Paulo- Paulista Medical School- UNIFESP-EPM. In 109 of these cadavers no variations were found while in one (0.9 %) it was possible to observe a variation in the trajectory of the brachiocephalic trunk and in the right common carotid artery.

Origin of Inferior Phrenic Arteries in the Celiac Trunk International Journal of Morphology
Petrella,Selma; Rodriguez,Celio Fernando de Sousa; Sgrott,Emerson Alexandre; Medeiros Fernandes,Geraldo José; Marques,Sergio Ricardo; Prates,José Carlos.
The knowledge of the arterial anatomic variations is very important for the clinical, radiological and surgical diagnosis. Regarding inferior phrenic arteries, which irrigate the diaphragm, it is known that they vary in relation to their origin. The purpose of the present study is to verify these variations. The abdominal cavity of eighty-nine adult cadavers of both sexes was dissected, of which 69 fixed in 10% formalin solution and 20 non-fixed. The fixed cadavers were dissected in Laboratories of Anatomy of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP-EPM), the Santo Amaro University (UNISA) and Lusiadas de Santos University (UNILUS). The non-fixed cadavers were dissected from the Death Verification Service of the city of São Paulo (USP) and from the...

RAMIFICATION OF THE HEPATIC ARTERY IN SWINE (Sus scrofa domestica) International Journal of Morphology
Büchler,Jussara Almeida Bruno; Prates,José Carlos; Fragoso Neto,Raul Antonio.
We have described the anatomical variations in the ramification of the hepatic artery of males and females adult pigs. The hepatic artery of in block removed stomach, liver and duodenum specimens (n=30), was injected of neoprene latex and dissected. The ramification of the hepatic artery in these animals presented three basic patterns: trifurcation, bifurcation and quadruple ramification, giving origin to vessels supplying the lobes of the liver and neighboring structures. In these three patterns the hepatic artery may or may not posses collateral branches
