IMPACT OF IDENTITY PRESERVATION OF NON-GMO CROPS ON THE GRAIN MARKET SYSTEM AgEcon
Vandeburg, Jennifer M.; Fulton, Joan R.; Dooley, Frank J.; Preckel, Paul V..
The impact of identity preservation (IP) for genetically modified grains (GMOs) on the grain handling system for a typical region in the Eastern Corn Belt is examined. A cost minimizing linear programming model of the transshipment system from farms to grain elevators to grain users tracks shipments and costs through the marketing system. This study compares two different grain segregation strategies: segregating grain within the elevator and designating specific elevators as IP-only facilities. As the cost per unit for grain segregation increases, the designated plant strategy becomes the most cost efficient strategy.

ENTROPY-BASED SEEMINGLY UNRELATED REGRESSION AgEcon
Harmon, Alice; Preckel, Paul V.; Eales, James S..
We adapt the classical SUR procedure to a minimum cross entropy approach to estimate linear systems of equations where the errors across equations are correlated. We conclude that our entropy-based approach may provide a reasonable substitute for SUR in cases where classical methods may not be applied due to shortages of data.

A Comparison of RAS and Entropy Methods in Updating IO Tables AgEcon
Ahmed, Syud Amer; Preckel, Paul V..
Since the first half of the 20th century, the input-output (IO) table has been the backbone of much empirical work used to support policy analysis and develop economy-wide models. The need for accurate, up-to-date IO tables is thus essential for establishing the validity of the empirical work that follows from them. However, the construction of an IO table for any given country is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. Current and accurate IO tables for many countries are thus often difficult to obtain on a regular basis. Once an initial IO table has been constructed, a common workaround is to collect partial information for subsequent periods, such as final demands for commodities within the economy, and then employ a Bayesian parameter estimation...

ESTIMATING THE VALUE OF BT CORN: A MULTI-STATE COMPARISON AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Martin, Marshall A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Edwards, C. Richard; Dobbins, Craig L..
Bt corn offers a powerful tool to control European corn borers and some other pests. Because pest infestations and farming practices differ across the Corn Belt, economic benefits also differ. This research estimates the value of Bt corn across the Corn Belt. Results identify areas where Bt adoption is economically justified.

ESTIMATING THE IMPORTANCE OF SHELF SPACE CONFIGURATION ON RETAILER'S PROFIT AgEcon
Roucan-Kane, Maud; Martens, Bobby J.; Preckel, Paul V..
Retail shelf space allocation remains a central issue in grocery retailing. A literature review produced many studies on retail shelf space allocation, but none which evaluated shelf space allocation using three major factors at once: space, vertical height, and price. In this study, shelf space allocation was modeled from the perspective of a retailer maximizing profit using space, vertical height, and price. Using benchmarking, the results show how shelf configuration affects consumer demand and retailer profit. Parameters for the model were based on experience-based intuition. Although the initial results are not valuable at this point, the method and results create a rationale and motivation to gather primary data. Once primary data is collected, this...

MODELING THE MOTIVATION FOR DIVERSIFICATION ON SUBSISTENCE FARMS IN THE ETHIOPIAN HIGHLANDS AgEcon
Preckel, Paul V.; Ahmed, Mohamed A. M.; Ehui, Simeon K..
Mathematical programming analysis has been quite effective for commercial farm planning in developed countries, but less so for subsistence farms in developing countries. In particular, it is difficult to reproduce the level of diversification observed on subsistence farms using a simple profit maximization framework. This paper proposes an alternative to the minimum consumption requirement approach for modeling subsistence farming households by treating consumption explicitly through a demand system motivated by Cobb-Douglas utility. A typical, linear programming-based production system is incorporated, allowing for the production of crops and livestock subject to constraints on resource availability. The approach successfully predicts consumption...

Modelling the Impact of Credit on Intensification in Mixed Crop-Livestock Systems: A Case Study from Ethiopia AgEcon
Ahmed, Mohamed A. M.; Preckel, Paul V.; Ehui, Simeon K..
Access to credit is one strategy for promoting the adoption of yield-enhancing technologies. However, advancing credit to smallholder farmers for encouraging technology adoption is a complex policy issue. The objective of this paper is to identify appropriate and sustainable credit repayment policies to encourage intensification in the Ethiopian Highlands. Using a household model, we analyze the impact of advancing in-kind credit in the form of fertilizer and seed to smallholder farmers in the Ethiopian highlands and alternative credit repayment strategies. The results indicate that in kind input credit of fertilizer and seed provided to farmers in the highland of Ethiopia increased the value of household crop output moderately and hence allowed the...

Mitigating the Compliance Cost of a Phosphorus-Based Swine Manure Management Policy AgEcon
Yap, Crystal; Foster, Kenneth A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Doering, Otto C., III; Richert, Brian T..
Regulatory changes by federal and state agencies portend a switch from nitrogen-based livestock manure disposal policies to phosphorus-based policies. This paper estimates the compliance costs of such a policy change for a hypothetical hog-grain farm in North Central Indiana. The farm includes 1,500 acres of cropland and has the capacity to raise 11,970 grow-finish hogs annually. The farm model also as the potential to produce four different crops on six different land types. A nonlinear math-programming model was developed to determine the optimal mix of management activities for a phosphorus-based regulation. The model allows mitigation of compliance costs via the choice between four different pig diets, three alternative methods of manure disposal,...

A MODEL FOR THE ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF PLANTATION BIOMASS PRODUCTION FOR CO-FIRING WITH COAL IN ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION AgEcon
Nienow, Sara; McNamara, Kevin T.; Gillespie, Andrew R.; Preckel, Paul V..
Public and private electric utilities are considering co-firing biomass with coal as a strategy to reduce the levels of CO2, SO2 and NO, in stack emissions, as well as a response to state legislative mandates requiring the use of renewable fuels. This analysis examines the conditions under which biomass co-firing is economically feasible for utilities and woody biomass producers and describes additional environmental and community benefits associated with biomass use. This paper presents a case study of woody biomass production and co-firing at the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) Michigan City Unit No.12 power plant. A Salix (willow) production budget was created to assess the feasibility of plantation tree production to supply biomass to...

THE EARNINGS EFFECTS OF MULTILATERAL TRADE LIBERALIZATION: IMPLICATIONS FOR POVERTY IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AgEcon
Hertel, Thomas W.; Ivanic, Maros; Preckel, Paul V.; Cranfield, John A.L..
Poverty reduction is an increasingly important consideration in the deliberations over multilateral trade liberalization. However, the analytical procedures used to assess the impacts of multilateral trade liberalization on poverty are rudimentary, at best. Most poverty studies have focused on a single country using detailed household survey data. When it comes to multi-country, global trade liberalization analyses, researchers are forced to resort to a discussion of average, or per capita effects, suggesting that if per capita real income rises, then poverty will fall. As we show in this paper, such an inference can be misleading. Our paper combines results from a new international, cross-section consumption analysis, with earnings data from household...

LEAST SQUARES AND ENTROPY AS PENALTY FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Preckel, Paul V..
Mathematical measures of entropy as defined by Shannon (1948) and Kullback and Leibler (1951) are currently in vogue in the field of econometrics, primarily due to the comprehensive work by Golan, Judge, and Miller (1996). In this paper, an alternative interpretation of the entropy measure as a penalty function over deviations is presented. Using this interpretation, a number of parallels are drawn with least squares estimators, and it is demonstrated that, with a minor modification of the traditional least squares estimator, both approaches may be applied to the general linear model. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed, and a philosophical approach to the selection of estimation technique is suggested.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PHOSPHORUS - REDUCING TECHNOLOGIES IN PORK PRODUCTION AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A..
Soil phosphorus levels have increased as pork production has become concentrated. Phosphorus-based manure management regulations for land application have been proposed by policy makers. The objective of this study is to determine benefits/costs of adopting two alternatives for reducing phosphorus: synthetic amino acids or phytase. An optimization model is constructed to determine optimal excreted nitrogen and phosphorus from alternative feed ingredients. Results are derived using different manure storage and application systems. While the two alternatives are not least-cost ingredients, they become profitable when producers are constrained by land. An important result is that the net cost of manure is negative.

Cotton Price Policy and New Cereal Technology in the Malian Cotton Zone AgEcon
Coulibaly, Jeanne Y.; Sanders, John H.; Preckel, Paul V.; Baker, Timothy G..
During the last decade, cotton production and area have been declining as a result of depleting soil nutrients and low cotton prices in the cotton zone of Mali. This paper shows that the Malian government’s 2011 policy to increase the farm gate cotton price as a response to world cotton price increase enhances farm income but has less impact on cotton than on maize production. A complementary policy of introducing new sorghum technologies would have an equal impact on farmers’ incomes in the cotton zone of Mali.

Analysis of Economically Optimal Nutrition and Marketing Strategies for Paylean® Usage in Hog Production AgEcon
Li, Ning; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A.; Schinckel, Allan P..
An approach to the development of the economically optimal dietary concentration of Paylean, duration of the Paylean feeding, and dietary lysine concentration for finishing hog production is presented. A simulation model describing daily growth of hogs under different Paylean and lysine concentration combinations was adapted for optimizing nutrition and marketing when feed is supplemented with Paylean. Net returns per pig space per day under four alternative payment schemes are maximized based on 10-year average price levels and production costs. Profitability of Paylean is investigated, and management strategies for swine production with Paylean are developed for two representative finishing operations.
