| Off Nice, over a whole year, the Ligurian Current transports about 1.8 multiplied by 10 super(6) m super(3)/s of sea water between the coast and approximately 33 km offshore. A marked annual cycle, which appears off Nice and also through the Corsican channel (with maximum transport occurring in December and January and minimum in August and September), has been correlated with freshwater inputs from precipitation and river discharges, essentially the input from the River Arno. | Plankton bioluminescence measurements were made in the Almeria-Oran frontal zone during December 1997 and January 1998. Vertical profiles of bioluminescence, chlorophyll fluorescence, temperature and salinity were obtained using a bathyphotometer associated with a CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) probe on a rosette. The first leg of the cruise was a regular sampling along a cross section of the area. The second leg consisted of a repetitive sampling of twelve stations at each one of the eight sites located in different water masses. | Rises in the water level of the Roya, the closest river to Monaco, are followed by a lowering of salinity in the coastal area that is all the more intense and synchronous as we near the shore and the river mouth, as well as at the sea surface. By comparing the mean salinity six miles offshore with that of the bay, between 1976 and 1983, it is found that the fresh water volume contained in the first metre below the surface of the bay is equivalent to the cumulative flow of the Roya in three hours. | The evolution of the phytoplankton distribution was monitored along the Calvi-Nice axis, from Calvi to 30 miles offshore, in relation with the hydrological features of the Liguro-Provencal front (Corsican sector) and nutrient availability. Oceanographic cruises repeated between 1982 and 1991 have emphasized the permanence of the front and the perennial stability of its hydrological characteristics. Moreover, the front and the associated vertical circulation influenced strongly, and in a reproducible fashion, the algal distribution within distances of few kilometres.
