Postweaning diarrhoea (PWD) due to Escherichia coli is an economically important disease in pig production. In this placebo-controlled study performed in Switzerland, the effects of oral supplementation of Allium sativum L. (garlic, AS) on performance (bodyweight (BW) and daily weight gain (DWG)) and health (body condition and clinical score) were investigated in postweaning piglets. Piglets (n=600) were randomly assigned to the treatment groups (placebo, AS or colistin) and observed from birth until three weeks postweaning. The treatments were administered for the first two weeks postweaning. Faecal dry matter (FDM) and coliform bacteria on pen level were measured weekly. Data were analysed using generalised mixed-effect models in R. BW and DWG of the AS... |

The effects of genotype and protein source on the performance of male layer hybrids compared to a fattening strain were investigated. The layer hybrids Lohmann Brown (LB, n = 90, male), Lohmann Selected Leghorn (LSL, n = 90, male) and the fattening hybrid Hubbard JA-757 (HUB, n = 90, mixed sex) were divided into three feeding groups: 1) commercial feed with 25,5 % soybean cake (Control), 2) control diet + alfalfa meal ad lib. (Alf-ext) and 3) control diet inclusive 12 % replace of soybean cake by alfalfa meal (Alf-int). Fattening periods were 63, 91 and 104 days for HUB, LB and LSL, respectively. Final weights were influenced by the interaction of genotype and feed (HUB 1843, LB 1871, LSL 1631 g). Highest daily weight gains showed HUB, followed by LB and... |

The organic regulation in the EU will implement the 100% organic feeding for monogastric animals in Organic Agriculture from 2019, and high quality potato and corn gluten from conventional sources will be banned. In preparation, it is necessary to generate optimized feed rations especially for young animals, which will not compromise animal health and growth. The aim of the current study was to conduct feeding experiments with piglets on-farm, investigating three different optimized 100% organic diets formulated by a feed company. From a usual commercial piglet diet (A) with 95% organic components consisting mainly of barley, oat flakes, horsebean, protein peas, soy cake and conventional potato protein (4%), an optimized 100% organic diet (B) with changed... |
