ALIMENTACION DEL CALAMAR ILLEX ARGENTINUS (CEPHALOPODA, OMMASTREPHIDAE) EN LA ZONA COMUN DE PESCA ARGENTINO-URUGUAYA Gayana
Bazzino,Gastón; Quiñones,Renato A.

PRIMER REGISTRO DE ABUNDANCIA VIRAL EN BAHIA COLIUMO Y PLATAFORMA CONTINENTAL FRENTE A CHILE CENTRAL Gayana
Chiang,Oscar E; Middelboe,Mathias; Quiñones,Renato A.
The abundance of virus like particles (VLP) was determined for the first time in the water column and sediment of Coliumo Bay and on a station on the continental shelf off central Chile. The VLP decreases with depth in the water column with a surface maximum of 4.1 x 10(7) VLP mL-1 and 5.87 x 10(7) VLP mL-1 on the shelf and Coliumo Bay, respectively. In the sediments the VLP ranged between 4.28 x 10(8) VLP mL (Coliumo Bay) and 1.01 x 10(8) VLP mL (shelf). The abundance of VLP is higher at the Bay both in the water column and in the sediment.

Living in the oxygen minimum zone: A metabolic perspective Gayana
Quiñones,Renato A; González,Rodrigo R; Levipan,Héctor; Gerdhard,Jessen; Gutiérrez,Marcelo H.
Respiration is a key variable to understand the flux of energy and matter in any ecosystem. In fact, ecosystem respiration is a critical component of the carbon cycle and might be important in regulating biosphere response to global climate change. Respiration is the basic process used by the biota to yield energy from the degradation of organic matter for their survival needs, its measurement provides an estimate of the minimum energy needed by the organism. Accordingly, the total respiration of an aquatic community can be equated to the minimum energy needed to maintain its organized living structure and function. Despite its importance, community respiration has been a process scarcely studied in the ocean and only during the 90's has become more...

First record of flamentous fungi in the coastal upwelling ecosystem off central Chile Gayana
Gutiérrez,Marcelo H; Pantoja,Silvio; Quiñones,Renato A; González,Rodrigo R.
We report for the frst time the presence of flamentous fungi in the water column and sediment in the coastal upwelling ecosystem off central Chile, using molecular tools and epifuorescence microscopy. Positive amplifcations of SSU 18s rDNA with specifc fungal primers were obtained for surface waters and sediments of this coastal ecosystem. Molecular richness obtained from denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis showed a higher number of fungal genotypes in nearshore than offshore sites and in summer than winter. Fungal structures identifed by epifuorescence microscopy in the water column were present as individual flaments or as aggregates of hyphae. We show for the frst time vertical water column profles of fungal biomass in the marine ecosystem. Fungal...
