Changing ideas of bodily cleanliness Organic Eprints
Quitzau, Maj-Britt.
The modern bathroom reflects Western ideas on the handling of bodily wastes, and consequently ideas of cleanliness. Taking a historical study as the point of departure, the purpose of this paper is to understand the extent to which the idea of cleanliness influences the possibility of converting the water closet to a more sustainable technology. An examination of historical changes demonstrates that our present ideas on cleanliness are distinct in their own way. It also demonstrates that our present ideas of cleanliness represent a drawing together of several loose ends, development towards which having been incoherent. Great variation has been apparent in practices surrounding, and the social importance of, cleanliness. People have lived in different ways...

Danish bathroom stories – a socio-technical study of what the present renovation boom is about Organic Eprints
Quitzau, Maj-Britt.
This paper explores changes in ordinary daily behaviour in relation to bathroom renovations in Denmark. Much suggests that new expectations evolve in connection to such renovations and that these changes could have long-term environmental impacts. The aim of this paper is to get a deeper understanding of how the production and reproduction of cultural meanings are interconnected with the changes in the bathroom. On the basis of general remarks about cultural meanings in connection to the bathroom, I discuss some general characteristics of modern bathroom ideas. My point is to elucidate the simultaneous rootedness and contextual determination of bathroom ideas. Hereafter, I examine two empirical examples in order to study the actual process of bathroom...

Greening the Danes Organic Eprints
Quitzau, Maj-Britt; Christensen, Toke H.; Gram-Hansen, Kirsten; Røpke, Inge; Godskesen, Mirjam.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of consumer-oriented environmental policies by analysing the development within private consumption in Denmark since the beginning of the 1980s and comparing this to the political initiatives taken by successive Danish governments. Three analytical questions direct our analysis and discussion:  What impact has the Danish consumer-oriented policy had on the development in private consumption since early 1980s? What are the environmental successes and failures of this policy?  To what degree has the consumer-oriented policy effectively addressed the driving forces (social, cultural and technological) behind growth in consumption?  What impact has the change from a Social Democratic to a liberal...

Attitudes towards utilization of composted domestic waste, sludge, urine and faeces as manure in agriculture Organic Eprints
Quitzau, Maj-Britt; Moeller, Jacob; Magid, Jakob.

Water-flushing toilets: systemic development and path-dependent characteristics and their bearing on technological alternatives Organic Eprints
Quitzau, Maj-Britt.
In this study, I analyse the historical process that led to embedding of water-flushing toilets in the Western world, then I explore innovative developments connected to alternative toilet solutions that use less water. The core argument is that path-dependent characteristics are found at both the systemic level and the level of daily practices. Systemic development and its embedding into daily practice are described based on existing studies of water supply and sewage systems, with a discussion of how daily practices changed and contributed to a lock-in. Then current attempts to introduce alternative toilet solutions are analysed. I conclude by suggesting that established water-flushing routines impede the distribution of alternative toilet solutions,...

Bathroom practices today Organic Eprints
Quitzau, Maj-Britt.
The present study aims at understanding some of the dynamics of social change that are underlying the present waves of interest related to the bathroom by taking a practice-oriented hold of ‘what is going on’ with the way bathrooms are used and arranged today in a specific Danish context. Through this approach, typical bathroom practices are laid out, hereby pointing out important contemporary aspects of the way bathrooms are used and arranged. Following this, dynamics connected to the shaping process of these practices are studied by analysing how practitioners and producers of bathrooms form part of this shaping process and how this is related to the overall development of the bathroom.

Urine, faeces and culture Organic Eprints
Quitzau, Maj-Britt.
There is a growing wish for recycling of human urine and faeces, also in the Western societies. One challenge of this recycling technology is that of changing the present waste-water infrastructure and toilet technologies. Another chal-lenge is that of attaining social and cultural acceptability of the new alternatives. My PhD project – "Culture in the bathroom – a study of social and cultural hindrances and potentials for recycling of urine and faeces" – is focusing on the social and cultural challenges of this idea of recycling. The project was initiated in December 2002. In this poster I will give empirical examples of social and cultural aspects in Danish bath-rooms and discuss their influence on the possibility of recycling urine and faeces....
