Element composition and quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Biweri), grown with sheep-manure composts Organic Eprints
Radics, László; Pusztai, Péter; Bíró, Borbála; Bíró, Zsolt; Németh, Tamás; Monori, István.
Two representative Hungarian soil-types (slightly humus sandy and loamy saline) were used to study the effect of various compost-products, made from sheep-yard manure and phosphorous amendments on the biomass-production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Biweri) in a pot-experiment. Two types of phosphorous amendments, such as raw-phosphate with high- or a phosphorous rock with low solubility were used as amendments during the twelve-week composting process. Pots of five-hundred g weight were used and considering the ecophysiological demand of the lettuce, low (30 t/ha) optimum (60 t/ha) and provocative (120 t/ha) levels of manure compost were applied to the soils. Yield of lettuce and mineral content analysis were done by ICP and soil-analysis by TVG....

Weed Management in Organic Farming in the New EU Member States and the Acceding Countries - Status Quo and Main Limitations Organic Eprints
Glemnitz, Michael; Radics, László; Mackensen, Kerstin.
Under the EU Specific Support Action (SSA) Project CHANNEL (“Opening Channels of Communication between the Associated Candidate Countries and the EU in Ecological Farming”), a survey on the status quo in weed management was conducted in 15 new member and acceding EU states. The focus of the data collection was on three main aspects relevant for the understanding of the current situation, they are: i.) legal and administrative framework, ii.) status quo in practice and iii.) scientific basis. These aspects were covered by separate questionnaires, addressed to different authorities and target groups. The results of the weed management questionnaire for the target group “experts engaged in practical farming” are presented in this paper. The analysis allowed...

Possible agents for organic seed treatment Organic Eprints
Radics, László; Ertsey, Anna.
The quality of seed is the basis of successful organic plant production. Since seed treatment with synthetic chemicals is not allowed in organic farming, it is important to find alternative methods for seed treatment instead of that process. The goal of our research was to find methods that retain good quality of organic seed and assure high field emergence. The experiment consisted of two parts. In the first part, the effects of the chosen materials on germination green pea (Pisum sativum L.) seeds was measured. In the second part, the effect of the chosen materials on the seed-borne fungi Ascochyta sp., and Fusarium moniliforme on corn seed was observed. The chosen methods were warm water, Biokál, Alginit and Vetozán -permitted fertilisers and...
