Demand for livestock tick control service in the Venda region, Northern Province AgEcon
Randela, Rendani; Liebenberg, Frikkie; Kirsten, Johann F.; Townsend, Rob F..
This article analyses factors influencing farmers’ willingness-to-pay for dipping services, as well as the revealed preference for dipping frequency using the multivariate and the logistic regression models. The study is based on a cross sectional survey of 125 smallscale cattle farmers interviewed in the Venda region of the Northern Province. Empirical multivariate and the logistic regression analysis show that liquidity, human resource, satisfaction with the programme and structure of production significantly influences farmers’ willingness-to-pay. However, the most important factor influencing both the willingness-to-pay and the dipping frequency is liquidity (employment). The results of this study have important implications for the delivery of...

The incidence of post-harvest problems among small farmers surveyed in three regions of the Limpopo Province AgEcon
Randela, Rendani.
High yielding varieties and new production technology have vastly increased the world's agricultural production and provided rural incomes and affordable food for large parts of the population. While production research has received considerable attention, until recently, post harvest activities have not received much attention. Post harvest research has significant contribution towards the alleviation of poverty, food insecurity and the sustainable use of resources. The objective of the paper is to assess the post-harvest constraints affecting main staple grain crops in three regions of the Limpopo Province. Some of the most common post harvest constraints revealed by the study are, weevils, rodents and transport for produce from the field to home...

Factors enhancing market participation by small-scale cotton farmers AgEcon
Randela, Rendani; Alemu, Zerihun Gudeta; Groenewald, Jan A..
This paper uses data collected from 177 small-scale farming households in Mpumalanga in an effort to identify factors that significantly influence the degree of commercialisation or market participation. A logistic regression model was applied within the transaction costs framework. Results support the hypothesis that transactions costs rank among the main determinants of commercialisation. The following variables were statistically significant: age, ability to speak/understand English, region, ownership of transport, access to market information, distance to market, dependency ratio, trust, land size and ownership of livestock. Increases in the latter four have negative effects on commercialisation. The negative relationship between land size and...
