Data i stakkevis om døde grise Organic Eprints
Serup, Tove; Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena.

Sow level risk factors for stillbirth of piglets in organic sow herds Organic Eprints
Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena; Krogh, Mogens Agerbo; Pedersen, L.J.; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
In Danish organic pig production, one-third af total bom piglets die befare weaning, and stillbirth has previously crudely been estimated to account for 2 7% af the total preweaning mortality. The objective af this study was to evaluate season, litter size, parity and body condition af the sow as risk factors for stillbirth in nine commercial Danish organic pig herds. The study was conducted over a 1-year period, and the data included registrations an 5170 farrowings with 82 906 total bom piglets. The average number af total bom piglets per titter was 16. 0, and the number af stil/bom piglets per titter was 1.1. A significant effect af season was seen with an odds ratio for stillbirth af 1. 15 during summer (May to August) compared with the remaining part...

Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena.
Hvordan: 1. Detaljerede dødelighedes registreringer foretaget i 9 besætninger over en etårig periode 2. Obduktioner af et udvalg af døde pattegrise fra de 9 besætninger

Increase sustainability of organic pig production with more vital piglets Organic Eprints
Schild, Sarah-Lina Aagaard; Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena; Pedersen, L.J..
About every third piglet dies before weaning within the Danish organic pig production, making the organic piglet mortality higher, than what is seen in the conventional indoor production. The high piglet mortality is in conflict with both the idea of increased animal welfare and the organic principles. As most of the piglets die within the first days after farrowing, improving the thermal conditions around the time of farrowing is important, since the thermal environment in many cases may be a significant contributor to piglet death also for piglets that are categorized as crushed or starved to death. This paper describes a subproject under the larger Danish VIPiglets project with the overall aim to reduce piglet mortality in Danish organic pig...

The effect of farrowing duration on maternal behavior of hyperprolific sows in organic outdoor production Organic Eprints
Thorsen, Cecilie Kobek; Schild, Sarah-Lina Aagaard; Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena; Bilde, Trine; Juul Pedersen, Lene.
Prolonged farrowing duration has previously been related to hypoxia, stillbirth and poor sow health post partum (pp). A difficult farrowing may affect sow behavior through exhaustion, sickness or pain and thus constitute a risk for sub-optimal maternal behavior. The aim of the present work was to study if the duration of farrowing in an organic sow herd affected sow postural changes, carefulness of lying down and nursing behavior relevant for early piglet mortality. Thirty-eight sows and their piglets housed in individual paddocks with an A-frame hut were video recorded from the day of farrowing and the following 72 h. The average farrowing duration till the last live born piglet was 7.5 ± 7 h (2.1–28.9 h). The only effect found of farrowing duration was a...

Risk factors for piglet mortality in Danish organic sow herds Organic Eprints
Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena.
High piglet mortality is a considerable problem in Danish organic sow herds. The aim of this study was to determine causes of preweaning mortality and to identify risk factors for piglet mortality within the Danish organic pig production. A large-scale study was performed in nine commercial Danish organic sow herds during a one-year period. Data included recordings on piglet mortality in 6000 litters. Moreover, 3000 piglets were necropsied in order to determine the cause of death. The results indicates that it is possible to achieve a lower piglet mortality in the future and that the Danish organic pig production and a high piglet mortality is not inevitably synonymous.

Sow level risk factors for early piglet mortality and crushing in organic outdoor production. Organic Eprints
Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena; Krogh, Mogens Agerbo; Pedersen, L.J.; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
Piglet mortality is a major problem in organic pig production affecting both farm economy and animal welfare. Knowledge is scarce on the risk factors of piglet mortality in Danish commercial organic pig production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate season, litter size, parity, sow body condition and stillborn littermates as risk factors for early piglet mortality and crushing of liveborn piglets from parturition until castration at day 3 to 5 postpartum (pp). The study was conducted over a 1-year period in nine commercial Danish organic pig herds practicing outdoor farrowing all year round. Data included recordings on 3393 farrowings with 50 284 liveborn piglets of which 14.8% died before castration. A subset of the dead piglets were collected...

VIPiglets – de første tal Organic Eprints
Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena.

RISK FACTORS FOR PIGLET MORTALITY IN DANISH ORGANIC PIG PRODUCTION Organic Eprints
Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena.
HYPOTHESES – WORK IN PROGRESS A proportion of piglets that are diagnosed as crushed have other potential underlying predisposing factors such as poor nutritional state, low birth weight or infectious diseases.  Poor health status, nutritional stage and high parity of the sow will increase the piglet mortality rates.  There is a significant difference of pre weaning mortality and causes of death both regarding the temporal distribution and in the individual variations between the farms.

Causes of preweaning mortality in organic outdoor sow herds Organic Eprints
Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena; Schild, Sarah-Lina Aagaard; Pedersen, L.J.; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
The aims of the current study were to identify the causes of preweaning piglet mortality and investigate the effect of season and parity on the proportions of mortality causes. The study was conducted in nine herds over a one-year period, and dead piglets were collected for necropsy once during each of the four seasons. In total, 2672 piglets were necropsied of which 60% were live-born but died post-partum (pp), 32% were stillborn and 8% were euthanised. Intra-partum deaths accounted for 88% of stillborn piglets. Eighty-one percent of necropsied live-born piglets died within four days pp. Half of these had a body weight of <1 kg at the time of death. Crushed and starved piglets accounted for 83% and 9% of mortalities until day four pp, respectively....
