In this study, winter wheat yields of organic and conventional farms with and without livestock in two regions in Germany were examined, with the aim of determining yield differences between the farming systems and possible reasons for these differences. Yields were 85% higher on conventional farms, mainly due to higher nitrogen input and the positive effects of chemical plant protection. The farms in North Rhine-Westphalia achieved higher yields than the farms in Bavaria. Climate was the most important factor, as lower temperatures during winter and higher precipitation during summer in Bavaria probably negatively affected yields. Differences in yield between farms with and without livestock could only be observed for conventional farms. The high... |

In a field experiment with five different main crop rotations and fives subtypes for organic biogas systems, aggregate stability, organic carbon, total nitrogen and pH were evaluated in the topsoil layer (0-5 cm) in April 2010 in a winter wheat stand. Aggregate stability reacted on variation of crop rotation but not on manuring with biogas slurry. Rotations with a higher percentage of legumes led to a higher aggregate stability. Nitrogen reacted in a similar way while organic carbon and pH were more influence by soil inhomogeneity. |

Biogas digestate is a by-product of the biogas process and contains high amounts of nitrogen, which makes it a valuable organic fertiliser. In a field trial near Freising, different crop rotations for biogas production were established in 2004/05 and fertilised with digestate only or were not fertilised (controls). A wide range of methods for soil analysis was used between 2013 and 2015 to identify the methods capable of showing a biogas digestate effect on soil quality. We learned that aggregate stability, C and N contents, and the number of earthworms showed significant differences between fertilised and unfertilised plots, while pH, water infiltration, bulk density and pore size distribution were not able to show biogas effects. |

In a field experiment with five different main crop rotations and fives subtypes for organic biogas systems, aggregate stability, organic carbon, total nitrogen and catalase were evaluated in the topsoil layer in spring 2010, 2011 and 2013 in a winter wheat stand. Aggregate stability was enhanced by variation of crop rotation but not on manuring with biogas slurry. Rotations with a higher percentage of legumes led to a higher aggregate stability. On the other hand catalase activity was improved by biogas slurry. |

Increasing yield instability due to climate change could be mitigated by higher interand intra crop diversity. During the course of the INSUSFAR project, several questions regarding the impact of more diverse crops on agricultural systems are adressed. To answer these questions, varieties, mixtures, and composite cross populations of wheat will be investigated in field experiments and on-farm. Based on the results, the socio-economic, ecological and yield performance of these varieties and the extent of genetic changes in genetically diverse populations will be tested. In addition, effects of plant breeding on the adaption of varieties to different input levels will be analysed. |

The effects of Biochar and combinations with organic manures on plant biomass and soil properties were tested in a lab experiment with two different soils. Highest applications (10%) of Biochar alone implicated a plant growth decrease while the manure combinations increased biomass, especially in the Luvisol. This positive reaction was not detected in the Regosol during the experiment. Increasing rates of the different amendments decreased soil bulk density, especially in the Luvisol. Manures increased soil respiration, Biochar had nearly no effect. In order to improve soil fertility, combining Biochar with organic N-fertiliser is recommended. |

In field experiments in five Bavarian farms three cultivation systems of onion produc-tion were compared: direct sowing, planting of set onions and planting of seedlings with 7 seeds per each tray. In three of five farms the onions yield up to more than 500 dt ha-1and in average the planted seedling yielded higher than the sown ones. In the other farms, where the set onions where included in the trials, the yields were lower depending on the high and early infection with downy mildew. The plant density (90-70 plant m-2) had more effect on the onion size distribution than on the total yield. |
