Maiserträge und Humusbilanzen in ökologischen Energiepflanzen-Fruchtfolgen mit Gärrestdüngung Organic Eprints
Levin, Karin; Simon, A.; Reents, Hans Jürgen; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
The long-term effects of biogas production in organic farming on soil fertility due to changes in crop rotations and the removal of carbon from these systems are, at present, unclear. Data from a long-term field trial in Bavaria, Germany were used to evaluate the effects of different crop rotations and fertilization with biogas digestate on maize yields and humus balances. Digestate fertilization led to higher maize yields compared with an unfertilized control. Maize yields were lower when the maize was sown directly into a white clover cover crop. Humus balances show the importance of considering both the return of organic matter via fertilization and crop rotation design to ensure that soil fertility is not depleted

Simon, A.; Levin, Kain; Cyffka, L-S; Simon, R.; Reents, Hans Jürgen; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
Biogas digestate is a by-product of the biogas process and contains high amounts of nitrogen, which makes it a valuable organic fertiliser. In a field trial near Freising, different crop rotations for biogas production were established in 2004/05 and fertilised with digestate only or were not fertilised (controls). A wide range of methods for soil analysis was used between 2013 and 2015 to identify the methods capable of showing a biogas digestate effect on soil quality. We learned that aggregate stability, C and N contents, and the number of earthworms showed significant differences between fertilised and unfertilised plots, while pH, water infiltration, bulk density and pore size distribution were not able to show biogas effects.

Einjährige Medicago- und Trifoliumarten als Bodenbedecker in Lebendmulchsystemen: Adaptation und Konkurrenzverhältnisse Organic Eprints
Baresel, Jörg Peter; Reents, Hans Jürgen.
The potential of self-reseeding annual clovers and medics (T. subetrraneum, T. campestre, M. minima, M. orbicularis) as continuous ground cover in living mulch systems with cereals in southern Germany was assessed. It could be shown, that all of the assessed species were winterhardy and were able to re-establish from seed. Competition of the legumes on rye was limited in the first year. The methods for seed-ing cereals into established legume stands have still to be improved.

Reents, Hans Jürgen; Weh, Florian; Fuchs, Alexander.
In field experiments in five Bavarian farms three cultivation systems of onion produc-tion were compared: direct sowing, planting of set onions and planting of seedlings with 7 seeds per each tray. In three of five farms the onions yield up to more than 500 dt ha-1and in average the planted seedling yielded higher than the sown ones. In the other farms, where the set onions where included in the trials, the yields were lower depending on the high and early infection with downy mildew. The plant density (90-70 plant m-2) had more effect on the onion size distribution than on the total yield.

Wachstum von Winterweizen bei Gärrestdüngung und unterschiedlichen Kleegrasmanagement Organic Eprints
Reents, Hans Jürgen; Bauer, S.; Levin, Kain.
Wheat performance and yields were tested in field an experiment regarding pre-crop management and fertilization with biogas digestate. Digestate fertilization led to an increased nitrogen uptake, higher yield and higher protein content. The yield increases were due to denser stands related to earlier fertilization. Recycling nitrogen from the harvested and digested clover-grass increased yield 50 % compared to mulching the above-ground biomass.

Ursachen für Ertragsunterschiede in Betrieben mit unterschiedlicher Wirtschaftsweise und Betriebsstruktur in zwei Regionen Deutschlands Organic Eprints
Forster, Felix Johannes; Reents, Hans Jürgen; Schmidt, Harald; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
In this study, winter wheat yields of organic and conventional farms with and without livestock in two regions in Germany were examined, with the aim of determining yield differences between the farming systems and possible reasons for these differences. Yields were 85% higher on conventional farms, mainly due to higher nitrogen input and the positive effects of chemical plant protection. The farms in North Rhine-Westphalia achieved higher yields than the farms in Bavaria. Climate was the most important factor, as lower temperatures during winter and higher precipitation during summer in Bavaria probably negatively affected yields. Differences in yield between farms with and without livestock could only be observed for conventional farms. The high...

Biogas-Fruchtfolgeversuch Viehhausen - Versuchsanlage und Ertragseffekte auf Winterweizen Organic Eprints
Reents, Hans Jürgen; Kimmelmann, Stefan; Kainz, Max; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
In 2004/05, a field experiment regarding the effect of crop rotations for biogas-production to yield and soil properties was established at the organic experimental station Viehhausen. The different aspect of energy and food production and soil protection of the 5 main crop rotations are explained. The wheat yield 2007-09 was affected by legume percentage in crop rotation, which means partly lower yields but higher protein. The biogas slurry manuring increases the protein content in general but better in rotations with legumes.

Innovative Approaches to Optimize Genetic Diversity for Sustainable Farming Systems of the Future (INSUSFAR): Projektübersicht Organic Eprints
Baresel, Jörg Peter; Backes, Gunter; Bülow, L.; Finckh, Maria R.; Frese, L.; Knapp, Samuel; Möller, Detlev; Reents, Hans Jürgen; Siegmeier, Torsten; Simon, R.; Weedon, Odette.
Increasing yield instability due to climate change could be mitigated by higher interand intra crop diversity. During the course of the INSUSFAR project, several questions regarding the impact of more diverse crops on agricultural systems are adressed. To answer these questions, varieties, mixtures, and composite cross populations of wheat will be investigated in field experiments and on-farm. Based on the results, the socio-economic, ecological and yield performance of these varieties and the extent of genetic changes in genetically diverse populations will be tested. In addition, effects of plant breeding on the adaption of varieties to different input levels will be analysed.

Einfluss von Fruchtfolgen zur Biomasseproduktion und Gärreste-Düngung auf Bodenstruktur und mikrobielle Aktivität Organic Eprints
Reents, Hans Jürgen; Stollovsky, Moritz; Forster, Felix; Lang, Toni; Bauer, Simon; Brandhuber, Robert; Beck, Robert.
In a field experiment with five different main crop rotations and fives subtypes for organic biogas systems, aggregate stability, organic carbon, total nitrogen and catalase were evaluated in the topsoil layer in spring 2010, 2011 and 2013 in a winter wheat stand. Aggregate stability was enhanced by variation of crop rotation but not on manuring with biogas slurry. Rotations with a higher percentage of legumes led to a higher aggregate stability. On the other hand catalase activity was improved by biogas slurry.

Froschmeir, S.; Reents, Hans Jürgen; Jobst, Florian; Urbatzka, Peer.
There is a problem with water erosion in organic growing of soybeans. A possible solution is growing under a mulch layer or cover crop. While this is usual practice in parts of the US, there is little success in Germany. A new approach is the use of straw material as a mulch to prevent erosion and suppress weed. The interrelation between weeds, soybean growth, yield and crude protein content was determined in a field experiment. There were significant differences in weed covering and weed species as well as in the yield between variants with straw mulch and without. The weed density was highest in the variant without any treatment (21.0 % of surface) and lower in the variants with straw mulch (12.7 %). The highest yield was in the control variant (15.8...

The effects of Biochar and combinations with organic manures on plant biomass and soil properties were tested in a lab experiment with two different soils. Highest applications (10%) of Biochar alone implicated a plant growth decrease while the manure combinations increased biomass, especially in the Luvisol. This positive reaction was not detected in the Regosol during the experiment. Increasing rates of the different amendments decreased soil bulk density, especially in the Luvisol. Manures increased soil respiration, Biochar had nearly no effect. In order to improve soil fertility, combining Biochar with organic N-fertiliser is recommended.

In a field experiment with five different main crop rotations and fives subtypes for organic biogas systems, aggregate stability, organic carbon, total nitrogen and pH were evaluated in the topsoil layer (0-5 cm) in April 2010 in a winter wheat stand. Aggregate stability reacted on variation of crop rotation but not on manuring with biogas slurry. Rotations with a higher percentage of legumes led to a higher aggregate stability. Nitrogen reacted in a similar way while organic carbon and pH were more influence by soil inhomogeneity.
