The marine Mollusca of the Kendeng Beds (East Java), Gastropoda, part I (Families Fissurellidae-Vermetidae inclusive) Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
In the spring of 1937 I started the identification of a very large collection of marine mollusca from the plio-pleistocene Kendeng beds West of Soerabaja (Java). Though the whole material had already been arranged systematically and the greater part of the species had been identified provisionally by Dr. R. IJzerman, who very kindly placed his useful Ms. notes at my disposal, the revision of the entire material will certainly take several years. I therefore resolved to publish the results successively, the more so, as I am not sure that I shall remain in the condition to carry on these investigations. The greater part of the present mollusca was collected by members of the staff of Geological Survey of the Netherland-Indies at Bandoeng (Java) during the...

Notes on some Surinam land snails Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
During my stay in Surinam (Dutch Guiana) in the first three months of 1963 most of my time was devoted to the study of the marine Mollusca, on which I shall report later. Now and then, however, I had an opportunity of collecting non marines. The following notes are the result of the study of some of the land snails in the material I collected. SUBULINIDAE Leptinaria (Luntia) insignis (E. A. Smith) Luntia insignis Smith, 1898, Journ. Conchol. 9: 28, fig. 8 (Trinidad); Pilsbry, 1906, Man. Conch. (2) 18: 218, pl. 40 fig. 7; Hummelinck, 1940, Studies Fauna Curaçao &c. 2: 98 (Aruba); 3: 115, 116 (Aruba); Morrison, 1943, Nautilus 57: 48 (British Guiana). Varicella clappi [non Pilsbry], Meeuse & Hubert, 1949, Basteria, 13: 18, pl. 3 fig. 15 (greenhouse...

On some species of the buccinid genus Babylonia (Mollusca, Gastropoda) Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
The synomymies and characters of Babylonia spirata (L.), B. valentiana (Sws.), B. ambulacrum (Sow.) and B. borneensis (Sow.) are discussed. A lectotype of Buccinum spiratum L. is selected so as to perpetuate Lamarck’s interpretation of this species. By restricting Schumacher’s name Nassa canaliculata to the first of the two references on which it has been based it is made an objective synonym of Linnaeus’s species.

Vitrinellidae (Marine Mollusca Gastropoda) from Holocene deposits in Surinam (Dutch Guiana) Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
Five species of Vitrinellidae have been found in the Holocene shell ridges of Surinam. Of these, Vitrinella (Striovitrinella) cupidinensis,Cochliolepis surinamensis, and Solariorbis guianensis are new species, while Cyclostremiscus caraboboensis Weisbord is known from Pliocene beds in Venezuela and Teinostoma (Pseudorotella) schumoi Vanatta belongs to the Recent fauna of Guatemala. A paratype of Vitrinella cupidinensis spec. nov. was found on Olinda beach near Recife, Brazil, and clearly is a Recent shell. It seems possible, and even likely, that eventually all five species will appear to be still living in the same general region.

Woutera Sophie Suzanna van Benthem Jutting was born 6th February 1899 in Batavia, Island of Java, Netherlands Indies (now Djakarta, Djawa, Indonesia) from Dutch parents. Her father, Wouter Christiaan LL.D. (Leiden), then a member of the High Court of Justice in Batavia, had served his entire career in the Netherlands Indies. Her mother, Sophie Henriëtte Aegidia Bosch, was the daughter of a high-ranking civil officer in the Dutch colonial government. Tera’s father retired in 1900 and returned with his family to the Netherlands, settling first at Nijmegen and later at Heemstede near Haarlem. There, in 1915, Tera’s mother died from tropical spruw, then nearly always fatal. Her father died at Haarlem in 1933. From 1911 until 1916 Tera attended the secondary...

The Marine Mollusca of Suriname (Dutch Guiana) Holocene and recent Part II. Bivalvia and Scaphopoda Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
"The student must know something of systematic work. This is populary supposed to be a dry-as-dust branch of zoology. In fact, the systematist may be called the dustman of biology, for he performs a laborious and frequently thankless task for his fellows, and yet it is one which is essential for their well-being and progress". The genus Babylonia (Prosobranchia, Buccinidae) Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van; Gittenberger, E..
INTRODUCTION The members of the Ivory Shell genus Babylonia Schlüter, 1838, belonging to the Buccinidae, are characterized by more or less slender buccinoid shells, mostly ornamented with a beautiful colour-pattern. Some species, e.g. the type species B. spirata, have a conspicuous sutural canal (see pl. 8 figs. 1-3), resembling the spirally arranged staircase of the Babylonian Tower in certain old pictures (pl. 6 fig. 1). Some of the species are found in many collections, others are rarely seen. A l l Recent members of the genus are restricted to the Indo-Pacific region. The fossil Babylonia species are found in a more extensive area, including southern and central Europe. The Recent species have been treated in the well known iconographies of the...

Notes on land slugs : 11. Arionidae, Milacidae and Limacidae from South Africa (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
New records of Arion intermedius Norm. are given. All known data on the genus Oopelta Mörch have been compiled and supplemented by new observations, mainly on O. nigropunctata Mörch and O. capensis Poll. Of the former species the type specimens were examined and the external variation and anatomy were studied. A fine series of O. capensis, with notes on the living animals by Mr. van Bruggen, enabled the author to study that species in detail. The affinities of Oopelta are discussed and it is concluded that the genus should be maintained in a subfamily of its own, Oopeltinae Cockerell, 1891, in the Arionidae. It seems unlikely that the type locality of O. nigropunctata on the Gold Coast near Accra (Ghana) is autochthonous. The distributional area of Oopelta...

Report upon a Collection of recent Shells from Java Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
I. Introduction. In the Geological Institution of the University of Amsterdam there is a collection of recent shells as material for comparison with fossil Mollusca. From this collection the writer identified a lot of shells collected by Professor Dr. H. Gerth during his stay in Java from 1928 to 1929. These materials will be discussed here. The writer is indebted to Prof. Dr. H. A. Brouwer (Amsterdam) for his permission to publish the results of these investigations on materials belonging to the Geological Institution, to Prof. Dr. H. Gerth for placing at his disposal the present collection and his field notes, and further to Dr. Ch. Bayer (Leiden), Mrs. W. S. S. van der Feen-van Benthem Jutting (Amsterdam), Mr. L. de Priester (Apeldoorn), Dr. F. A....

The genus Antemetula Rehder in the Indo- Westpacific area, with the description of two new fossil species Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
Rehder (1943: 199) pointed out, that Buccinum clathratum Adams & Reeve, 1848, is the type of the genus Metula H.& A. Adams, 1858. For the species congeneric with Buccinum metula Hinds, 1844, he proposed the generic name Antemetula, with that species as the type. Bucchium metula was described by Hinds from a specimen dredged by the Sulphur off the West coast of Veragua, at a depth of a few fathoms. There are no other records of the species from the American West coast. Smith (1904: 465) called attention to the fact that young specimens of Buccinum mitrella Adams & Reeve, 1848, match Hinds’s figure of B. metula. B. mitrella was described from one or more specimens dredged by the Samarang in the China Sea, at a depth of 10 fathoms, and has been...

The marine Mollusca of the Kendeng Beds (East Java) Gastropoda Part V (Families Muricidae — Volemidae inclusive) Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
Part IV of this monograph was published in volume 12 of this Journal, pp. 89—120, 1942. Since 1941 the author can devote only a small part of his time to these investigations. This fact, and the shortness of paper available for scientific publications, made him decide to alter the way of publication: the extensive lists of references to literature and the records of distribution with every species have now been omitted. As further parts of this publication will follow with rather large intervals of time, from the present part onward complete lists of references will be added to each part, instead of supplements to the bilbliography published in part I.

The Holocene and Recent marine Bivalve Mollusca of Surinam Naturalis
Regteren Altena, C.O. van.
As the preparation of an annotated check list of the marine Mollusca of Surinam (Dutch Guiana) will take some more years, it was thought appropriate to publish a preliminary report on the bivalves. This report consists of a list of 126 species with a few notes containing, i.a., the description of seven new species, and a discussion of the local distribution of the marine bivalves. Of the 126 species listed seven are described as new, viz., Nucula surinamensis, Crenella abbotti, Periploma coquettae, Tivela geijskesi, Diplodonta (Sphaerella) rehderi, Lucina (Parvilucina) clenchi, and Mactra (Micromactra) surinamensis.
