Introduction of Aureobasidium pullulans to the phyllosphere of organically grown strawberries with focus on its establishment and interactions with the resident microbiome Organic Eprints
Sylla, Justine; Alsanius, Beatrix. W.; Krüger, Erika; Reineke, Annette; Bischoff-Schaefer , Monika; Wohanka, Walter.
Currently, there is little knowledge of the establishment of repeatedly applied biological control agents (BCAs) in the phyllosphere of plants and, in particular, their interactions with the resident microbiome. Under field conditions, the BCA Aureobasidium pullulans was applied as a model organism to organically grown strawberries during two subsequent years (2011, 2012), either as single strain treatment or with the co-application of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. Fungal and bacterial communities of strawberry leaves were investigated by means of plate counts and 454 pyrosequencing. The establishment of the introduced A. pullulans strains considerably differed between the two years, presumably due to distinct environmental conditions....

Rapid Emergence of Baculovirus Resistance in Codling Moth to Dominant, Sex-linked Inheritance Organic Eprints
Asser-Kaiser, Sabine; Fritsch, Eva; Undorf-Spahn, Karin; Kienzle, Jutta; Eberle, Karolin; Gund, Nadine; Reineke, Annette; Zebitz, Claus; Heckel, David; Jehle, Johannes.
Insect-specific baculoviruses are increasingly used as biocontrol agents of lepidopteran pests in agriculture and forestry, and thy have been previously regarded as robust to resistance development by the insects. However, in more than a dozen cases of field resistance of codling moth Cydia pomonella to commercially applied C. pomonella granulovirus (CpGV) in German orchards, resistance ratios exceed 1000. The rapid emergence of resistance is facilitated by sex-linkage and concentration dependant dominance of the major resistance gene and genetic uniformity of the virus. When the gene is fixed, resistance levels approach 100.000-fold. Our findings highlight the need for development of resistance management strategies for baculoviruses. (C)2007, American...

Leaf microbiota of strawberries as affected by biological control agents Organic Eprints
Sylla, Justine; Alsanius, Beatrix W.; Krüger, Erika; Reineke, Annette; Strohmeier, Stephan; Wohanka, Walter.
The increasing use of biological control agents (BCAs) against Botrytis cinerea in strawberry raises the question of whether there are any undesirable impacts of foliar applications of BCAs on nontarget microorganisms in the phyllosphere. Therefore, our objective was to investigate this issue within a field study. Strawberry plants were repeatedly sprayed with three BCAs—namely, RhizoVital 42 fl. (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42), Trianum-P (Trichoderma harzianum T22), and Naturalis (Beauveria bassiana ATCC 74040)—to suppress Botrytis cinerea infections. Microbial communities of differentially treated leaves were analyzed using plate counts and pyrosequencing and compared with the microbial community of nontreated leaves. Plate count results indicate that...

Rueß, Franz; Pfeiffer, Barbara; Brinkmann, Claudia; Schmückle-Tränkle, Gabriele; Reineke, Annette; Hauck, Mirjam; Stephan, Dietrich; Pelz, Julia; Zimmermann, Rita; Kleefeld, Ursula; Zimmer, Jürgen; Toups, Ina; Schult, Tina; Rank, Harald.

Jehle, Johannes A.; Asser-Kaiser, Sabine; Fritsch, Eva; Gund, Nadine A.; Heckel, David; Huber, Jürg; Kienzle, Jutta; Reineke, Annette; Schulze-Bopp, Stefanie; Undorf-Spahn, Karin; Zebitz, Claus P.W..

Asser, Sabine; Gund, Nadine A.; Eberle, K. E.; Matt-Schmid, A.; Reineke, Annette; Heckel, David G.; Zebitz, Claus P. W.; Jehle, J. A..
The Codling moth granulovirus (Cydia pomonella granulovirus, CpGV, Baculoviridae) is one of the most important bio control agents of the codling moth in apple production. Since 2003, codling moth populations have been observed in Germany and France, which show an up to thousand fold decreased susceptibility to CpGV. A spread of this phenomenon is a severe threat to the efficient control of the codling moth, particularly in organic farming. In order to prevent this development, investigations on the popula-tion genetics of codling moth populations in Germany were initiated to assess the baseline susceptibilities of selected populations. Furthermore, the genetic and biologi-cal background of resistance of the codling moth to CpGV are being elucidated by...
