Pathum Thani 1 is an aromatic non-glutinous and photoperiod insensitive rice variety. Its yield potential is up to 800-900 kg/rai under suitable fertilizer usage and cultural practices. Average yield on farm trail was damaged by flooding, brown planthopper and bacterial blight about 20 to 50 percent. Improvement of Pathum Thani 1 for submergence tolerance, bacterial blight and brown planthopper resistance using molecular marker is one approach to solve this problem. This project was carried out under the commitment between the Rice Department and the Gene Discovery Unit of Kasetsart University. The experiments were divided into two parts, first part was crossing Pathum Thani 1 and Pin Kaset 1 to introduce bacterial blight resistance gene including Xa21,...

Bahng Taen is a non-glutinous, non-photoperiod sensitive, short duration and high yielding rice variety. This variety showed resistance against brown planthopper (BPH) in the Eastern region, but the resistance has decreased drastically. Therefore, marker-assisted backcrossing was applied to improve BPH resistance by introgression of a Bph3 resistant gene from PTB33 and Rathu Heenati into Bahng Taen. Two SSR markers, RM 170 for Bahng Taen with PTB33 crossing and RM 190 for Bahng Taen with Rathu Heenati crossing, were used in combination with plant type selection to obtain the target plants with Bph3 gene. Twenty six and thirty heterozygous BC4F1 plants were developed from the cross of Bahng Taen with PTB33 and Bahng Taen with Rathu Heenati, respectively....

Brown planthopper resistant promising line, SPR94007-PTT-27-2-9-3-2, is photoperiod insensitive line derived from single cross of SPR1/IR64 made at Suphan Buri Rice Research Center in 1994. Its F2-F6 progenies had been grown and selected at Pathum Thani Rice Research Center where fixed line, SPR94007-PTT-27-2-9-3, were obtained. In 2008, this line and other breeding lines were tested for brown planthopper (BPH) resistance and intra-station yield trial. SPR94007-PTT-27-2-9-3 was not selected to be tested in further step due to its unsatisfied yield, but it was only 1 of 2 lines that had no damage of BPH in greenhouse testing. Thus, remained seedlings of those 2 lines had been transplanted in pots and separately harvested panicle by panicle and pedigree...

Blast disease is a major rice disease causing significant rice yield loss worldwide. These are several methods to control this disease, but the most effective and most suitable method is to use blast resistant varieties. Prachin Buri Rice Research Center has released a rice variety ‘Bahng Taen’, which is resistant to blast in the Eastern region. Bahng Taen is a non-glutinous, photoperiod insensitive, early maturity variety with high yielding ability. However, the ability to resist to blast of this variety is declining drastically. It is, therefore, necessary to improve blast resistance in Bahng Taen by introgressing blast resistant genes into its background from two donors; PSL’07F6No.2 and PSL’07F6No.5. These two resistant lines were derived from the...

Blast disease is a major rice disease causing significant rice yield loss over the world. It is believed that growing a resistance variety is the most effective strategy for blast disease management. Bahng Taen is one of the released Thai rice varieties primarily found to be resistance to blast disease in the Eastern region. Nowadays, the resistance has decreased drastically. The variety is a non-glutinous, non-photoperiod insensitive, short duration of maturity with high yielding characteristic. In this project, a marker-assisted backcrossing strategy was applied in order to improve blast resistance in Bahng Taen by introgression of resistant genes from donors; PSL’07F6No.2 and PSL’07F6No.5 into this variety. Flanking markers RM212/RM319 and RM224/RM144...
