Spatial and Seasonal Distributions of Frontal Activity over the French Continental Shelf in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Yelekci, Ozge; Charria, Guillaume; Capet, Xavier; Reverdin, Gilles; Sudre, Joel; Yahia, Hussein.
The frontal activity in coastal regions remains a research field where a large number of open questions needs to be addressed to quantify the potential impact of these processes on dependent systems (e.g. biogeochemical activity). Spatial and seasonal distributions of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) fronts (∼1-100 km) in the vicinity of main French rivers, Gironde and Loire, are explored over the continental shelf North of 45 °N in the Bay of Biscay. A high resolution (1 km spatial and daily temporal resolutions) dataset of 11 years' (2003 to 2013) remotely sensed SST by MODIS sensor onboard Aqua and Terra satellites has been investigated and compared with coastal numerical model experiments. The detection and characterization fronts with fluctuating...

Collecting and gridding complementary in-situ SST/SSS data for the calibration and validation of SMOS ArchiMer
Brion, Emilie; Gaillard, Fabienne; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Delcroix, Thierry; Alory, Gael; Reverdin, Gilles.
Providing reliable in-situ surface temperature and salinity data over the global ocean within short delay is critical for the calibration and validation of the recently launched Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity Satellite (SMOS). The work presented here has been undertaken as a contribution to GLOSCAL (Global Ocean Surface Salinity Calibration and Validation), retained as one of the ESA CalVal Projects. Based on the Coriolis datasets and using In Situ Analysis System (ISAS) tool, a near real time analysis system has been developed. It provides gridded fields of sea surface salinity and temperature and the corresponding in-situ dataset. In addition to research activities, these products would be used to help the quality control of SMOS satellite data, and to...

Remote Sensing of Sea Surface Salinity From CAROLS L-Band Radiometer in the Gulf of Biscay ArchiMer
Martin, Adrien; Boutin, Jacqueline; Hauser, Daniele; Reverdin, Gilles; Parde, Mickael; Zribi, Mehrez; Fanise, Pascal; Chanut, Jerome; Lazure, Pascal; Tenerelli, Joseph; Reul, Nicolas.
A renewal of interest for the radiometric L-band Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) remote sensing appeared in the 1990s and led to the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite launched in November 2009 and to the Aquarius mission (launched in June 2011). However, due to low signal to noise ratio, retrieving SSS from L-band radiometry is very challenging. In order to validate and improve L-band radiative transfer model and salinity retrieval method used in SMOS data processing, the Cooperative Airborne Radiometer for Ocean and Land Studies (CAROLS) was developed. We analyze here a coastal flight (20 May 2009), in the Gulf of Biscay, characterized by strong SSS gradients (28 to 35 pss-78). Extensive in-situ measurements were gathered along the plane track....

Validation of Salinity Data from Surface Drifters ArchiMer
Reverdin, Gilles; Morisset, S.; Boutin, Jacqueline; Martin, Nicolas; Sena-martins, M.; Gaillard, Fabienne; Blouch, P.; Rolland, J.; Font, J.; Salvador, J.; Fernandez, Pili; Stammer, D..
Salinity measurements from 119 surface drifters in 2007-12 were assessed; 80% [Surface Velocity Program with a barometer with a salinity sensor (SVP-BS)] and 75% [SVP with salinity (SVP-S)] of the salinity data were found to be usable, after editing out some spikes. Sudden salinity jumps are found in drifter salinity records that are not always associated with temperature jumps, in particular in the wet tropics. A method is proposed to decide whether and how to correct those jumps, and the uncertainty in the correction applied. Northeast of South America, in a region influenced by the Amazon plume and fresh coastal water, drifter salinity is very variable, but a comparison with data from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity satellite suggests that this...

The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred...

SMOS salinity in the subtropical north Atlantic salinity maximum: 1. Comparison with Aquarius and in situ salinity ArchiMer
Hernandez, Olga; Boutin, Jacqueline; Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Reverdin, Gilles; Martin, Nicolas; Gaillard, Fabienne; Reul, Nicolas; Vergely, J. L..
Sea surface salinity (SSS) measured from space by the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission is validated in the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean. 39 transects of ships of opportunity equipped with thermosalinographs (TSG) crossed that region from 2010 to 2012, providing a large database of ground truth SSS. SMOS SSS is also compared to Aquarius SSS. Large seasonal biases remain in SMOS and Aquarius SSS. In order to look at the capability of satellite SSS to monitor spatial variability, especially at scales less than 300 km (not monitored with the Argo network), we first apply a monthly bias correction derived from satellite SSS and In Situ Analysis System (ISAS) SSS differences averaged over the studied region. Ship SSS averaged over 25 km is...

Sea surface salinity under rain cells: SMOS satellite and in situ drifters observations ArchiMer
Boutin, Jacqueline; Martin, Nicolas; Reverdin, Gilles; Morisset, S.; Yin, X.; Centurioni, L.; Reul, Nicolas.
We study the signature of rainfall on S1cm, the sea surface salinity retrieved from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite mission first by comparing SMOS S1cm with ARGO sea surface salinity measured at about 5 m depth in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and in the Southern Pacific Convergence Zone; second by investigating spatial variability of SMOS S1cm related to rainfall. The resulting estimated S1cm decrease associated with rainfall occurring within less than 1 h from the salinity measurement is close to −0.2 pss (mm h−1) −1. We estimate that rain induced roughness and atmospheric effects are responsible for no more than 20% of this value. We also study the signature of rainfall on sea surface salinity measured by surface...

The OceanoScientific Programm was initiated in 2006 and yielded the creation of a specific equipment : the OSC-System. The OSC-System measures physical parameters at the air-sea interface including Sea Surface temperature and Salinity. An OSC-System was installed on board of the OceanoScientific Explorer Boogaloo sailing ship. A cruise around the world was initiated the 17/11/2016 and ended 02/06/2017 including 60 days south of 40°S. Sea Surface temperature and salinity collected along this cruise are discussed in this technical report.

Air-Sea Turbulent Fluxes From a Wave-Following Platform During Six Experiments at Sea ArchiMer
Bourras, Denis; Cambra, Remi; Marié, Louis; Bouin, Marie-noëlle; Baggio, Lucio; Branger, Hubert; Beghoura, Houda; Reverdin, Gilles; Dewitte, Boris; Paulmier, Aurélien; Maes, Christophe; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Pairaud, Ivane; Fraunié, Philippe; Luneau, Christopher; Hauser, Danièle.
Turbulent fluxes at the air‐sea interface are estimated with data collected in 2011 to 2017 with a low‐profile platform during six experiments in four regions. The observations were carried out with moderate winds (2‐10 m s‐1) and averaged wave heights of 1.5 m. Most of the time, there was a swell, with an averaged wave age (the ratio between wave phase speed and wind speed) being equal to 2.8±1.6. Three flux calculation methods are used, namely the eddy‐covariance (EC), the inertial‐dissipation (ID), and the bulk methods. For the EC method, a spectral technique is proposed to correct wind data from platform motion. A mean bias affecting the friction velocity (u*) is then evaluated. The comparison between EC u* and ID u* estimates suggests that a constant...

Interannual Variability of the Mixed Layer Winter Convection and Spice Injection in the Eastern Subtropical North Atlantic ArchiMer
Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Reverdin, Gilles; Lazar, Alban.
The Argo dataset is used to study the winter upper-ocean conditions in the northeastern subtropical (NEA) Atlantic during 2006-12. During late winter 2010, the mixed layer depth is abnormally shallow and a negative anomaly of density-compensated salinity, the so-called spiciness, is generated in the permanent pycnocline. This is primarily explained by unusual weak air-sea buoyancy flux during the late winter 2010, in contrast with the five other studied winters. Particularly deep mixed layers and strong spiciness anomalies are observed during late winter 2012. The 2010 winter conditions appear to be related to historically low North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and high tropical North Atlantic index (TNA). Interannual variability of the eastern subtropical...

Surface Salinity in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre During the STRASSE/SPURS Summer 2012 Cruise ArchiMer

We investigated a 100 x 100 km high-salinity region of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre during the Sub-Tropical Atlantic Surface Salinity Experiment/Salinity Processes in the Upper-ocean Regional Study (STRASSE/SPURS) cruise from August 21, 2012, to September 9, 2012. Results showed great variability in sea surface salinity (SSS; over 0.3 psu) in the mesoscale, over 7 cm of total evaporation, and little diapycnal mixing below 36 m depth, the deepest mixed layers encountered. Strong currents in the southwestern part of the domain, and the penetration of freshwater, suggest that advection contributed greatly to salinity evolution. However, it was further observed that a smaller cyclonic structure tucked between the high SSS band and the strongest currents...

Near-Sea Surface Temperature Stratification from SVP Drifters ArchiMer
Reverdin, Gilles; Morisset, S.; Bellenger, H.; Boutin, J.; Martin, N.; Blouch, P.; Rolland, Jean; Gaillard, Fabienne; Bouruet-aubertot, P.; Ward, B..
This study describes how the hull temperature (Ttop) measurements from multisensor surface velocity program (SVP) drifters can be combined with other measurements to provide quantitative information on near-surface vertical temperature stratification during large daily cycles. First, Ttop is compared to the temperature measured at 17 -cm depth from a float tethered to the SVP drifter. These 2007-12 SVP drifters present a larger daily cycle by 1%-3% for 1 degrees-2 degrees C daily cycle amplitudes, with a maximum difference close to the local noon. The difference could result from flow around the SVP drifter in the presence of temperature stratification in the top 20 cm of the water column but also from a small influence of internal drifter temperature on...

Interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere occur at the air-sea interface through the transfer of momentum, heat, gases and particulate matter, and through the impact of the upper-ocean biology on the composition and radiative properties of this boundary layer. The Tara Pacific expedition, launched in May 2016 aboard the schooner Tara, was a 29-month exploration with the dual goals to study the ecology of reef ecosystems along ecological gradients in the Pacific Ocean and to assess inter-island and open ocean surface plankton and neuston community structures. In addition, key atmospheric properties were measured to study links between the two boundary layer properties. A major challenge for the open ocean sampling was the lack of ship-time available...

Global high-resolution mapping of ocean circulation from TOPEX/Poseidon and ERS-1 and-2 ArchiMer
Ducet, N; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Reverdin, Gilles.
This study focuses on the improved estimation of mesoscale surface ocean circulation obtained by merging TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) and ERS-1 and -2 altimeter measurements between October 1992 and May 1998. Once carefully intercalibrated and homogenized, these data are merged through an advanced global objective analysis method that allows us to correct for residual long wavelength errors and uses realistic correlation scales of ocean dynamics, The high-resolution (0.25 degrees x 0.25 degrees) merged T/P + ERS-1 and -2 sea level anomaly maps provide more homogeneous and reduced mapping errors than either individual data set and more realistic sea level and geostrophic velocity statistics than T/P data alone. Furthermore, the merged T/P + ERS-1 and -2 maps yield...

The "Cooperative Airborne Radiometer for Ocean and Land Studies" (CAROLS) L-Band radiometer was designed and built as a copy of the EMIRAD II radiometer constructed by the Technical University of Denmark team. It is a fully polarimetric and direct sampling correlation radiometer. It is installed on board a dedicated French ATR42 research aircraft, in conjunction with other airborne instruments (C-Band scatterometer-STORM, the GOLD-RTR GPS system, the infrared CIMEL radiometer and a visible wavelength camera). Following initial laboratory qualifications, three airborne campaigns involving 21 flights were carried out over South West France, the Valencia site and the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) in 2007, 2008 and 2009, in coordination with in situ field...
