New Insights of the Sicily Channel and Southern Tyrrhenian Sea Variability ArchiMer
Menna, Milena; Poulain, Pierre-marie; Ciani, Daniele; Doglioli, Andrea; Notarstefano, Giulio; Gerin, Riccardo; Rio, Marie-hélène; Santoleri, Rosalia; Gauci, Adam; Drago, Aldo.
The dynamics of the Sicily Channel and the southern Tyrrhenian Sea are highly influenced by the seasonal variability of the Mediterranean basin-wide circulation, by the interannual variability of the numerous mesoscale structures present in the Channel, and by the decadal variability of the adjacent Ionian Sea. In the present study, all these aspects are investigated using in-situ (Lagrangian drifter trajectories and Argo float profiles) and satellite data (Absolute Dynamic Topography, Sea Level Anomaly, Sea Surface Temperature, wind products) over the period from 1993 to 2018. The availability of long time series of data and high-resolution multi-sensor surface currents allow us to add new details on the circulation features and on their driving...

For Global Ocean- Delayed Mode in-situ Observations of Ocean Surface Currents. Copernicus Quality Information Document ArchiMer
Rio, Marie-hélène; Etienne, Marie-hélène.
This document is the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service for In Situ observations Quality Information Document (QUID) on the global currents product from drifting buoys. This data set contains temperature and velocity time series from Surface Velocity Program (SVP) drifters. They are collected, quality controlled and distributed by the AOML Data Assembly Center (DAC). Then a wind slippage correction is computed. Most of the quality control procedures are performed by AOML. Quality of drifter’s measurements depends on the platform and on its physical integrity. If the drifter’s measurement is in nominal mode, the 15 m depth velocity is measured. If not, the surface current is sampled. This information is provided in the data set and defines the...

Copernicus in situ TAC, Global ocean delayed mode currents from drifting buoys, Product User Manual - PUM ArchiMer
Rio, Marie-hélène; Etienne, Hélène.
This document is the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service for In Situ observations Product User Manual (PUM) on the global currents product from drifting buoys. It describes how it is built, what is the content, what data services are available to access them, and how to use the files. The In Situ delayed mode product designed for reanalysis purposes integrates the best available version of in situ data for ocean surface currents. The data are collected from the Surface Drifter Data Assembly Centre (SD-DAC at NOAA AOML). All surface drifters data have been processed to check for drogue loss. Drogued and undrogued drifting buoy surface ocean currents are provided with a drogue presence flag as well as a wind slippage correction for undrogued...

Atlantos. Current EOV Report ArchiMer
Etienne, Hélène; Rio, Marie-hélène.
The objective of this subtask is to demonstrate the value of the in-situ surface currents observing system by ensuring the link with the ESA GlobCurrent project. GlobCurrent is an ESA Data User Element started in October 2013 (running until June 2017) whose objective is “to advance the quantitative estimation of ocean surface currents from satellite sensor synergy and demonstrate impact in user-led scientific, operational and commercial applications that, in turn, will increase the uptake of satellite measurements”. In the framework of Globcurrent, several surface and near-surface current products have been calculated: global, ¼ ° maps of ocean surface geostrophic currents (from altimetry), Ekman currents at two distinct depths (surface and 15m) and...
