Changes in Food, Alcohol and Cigarettes Consumption during Transition: Evidence from Russia AgEcon
Herzfeld, Thomas; Huffman, Sonya Kostova; Oskam, Arie J.; Rizov, Marian.
This paper examines the changes in nutritional behavior of Russian adults over the ten-year transition period, between 1994 and 2004. We present evidence on the impact of individual as well as regional characteristics on changes in fat, protein, alcohol and cigarette consumption, and on diversity of diet. The results from a dynamic empirical model suggest that among microeconomic determinants, initial levels of consumption, gender, holding a university degree, and having access to a garden plot have a significant impact on the changes in consumption behavior in Russia. Regarding the macroeconomic variables, economic growth has a significant impact on changes in fat and protein consumption and on alcohol use, while unemployment changes significantly...

The rise of obesity in transition economies: theory and evidence from Russian longitudinal monitoring survey AgEcon
Huffman, Sonya Kostova; Rizov, Marian.
This study integrates theoretical and empirical models to facilitate understanding of human obesity and the factors contributing to rising obesity in Russia during the transition from a planned to a market economy. Recent individual level data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey for 1994 and 2004 show that diet/caloric intake, smoking, gender and education are important determinants of obesity in Russia. Empirical results strongly support our model for production of BMI and demand for inputs in the BMI production function. The analysis provides information on the link between dietary patterns and other factors of obesity in Russia which is important for formulation, implementation and monitoring of effective policies designed to improve overall...

POST-COMMUNIST AGRICULTURAL TRANSFORMATION AND THE ROLE OF HUMAN CAPITAL: EVIDENCE FROM ROMANIA AgEcon
Rizov, Marian; Mathijs, Erik; Swinnen, Johan F.M..
Farm restructuring in post-communist transition countries has resulted in a broad range of farm types, such as cooperatives, companies, partnerships and sole proprietorships. This study examines which factors affect production organization choices of rural households with an emphasis on the role of human capital in the agricultural transition process. We use a multinomial logit model and data from a nation-wide survey of Romanian farms, organized in 1996. The results of the empirical tests support the main hypothesis that the transformation process outcome depends primarily on human capital and farm physical capital endowments of the household, translated into household income by the household entrepreneurial input. Entrepreneurial ability is...

Body Weight and Labour Market Outcomes in Post-Soviet Russia AgEcon
Huffman, Sonya Kostova; Rizov, Marian.
This paper estimates the impacts of weight, measured by body mass index (BMI), on employment, wages, and missed work due to illness for Russian adults by gender using recent panel data (1994-2005) from the nationally representative Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS). We employ econometric techniques to control for unobserved heterogeneity and potential biases due to endogeneity in BMI. The results show an inverted U-shaped effect of BMI on probability of employment for men and women. We did not find evidence of wage penalty for higher BMI. In fact, the wages for overweigh men are higher. However, having a BMI above 28.3 increases the number of days missing work due to health problems for men. Overall, we find negative effects of obesity on...

Agricultural Production Organization in Transition Economies and the Role of Human Capital: Evidence from Romania AgEcon
Rizov, Marian.
This paper examines the production mode choices of rural households with an emphasis on the role of human capital in the agricultural transformation process. Farm restructuring in Central and Eastern Europe has resulted in a broad range of farm types, such as co-operatives, partnerships, individual farms and combinations of those. The fact that resources are allocated into different production organization modes is attributed to the utility maximization strategy of heterogeneous agents deriving income from uncertain sources in the face of absent or imperfect factor markets. Empirical results from a multinomial logit model estimated with data from two-year nation-wide survey of Romanian farm households support the hypothesis that the outcome of the...

SHIFT TO INDIVIDUAL FARMING AND THE PRODUCTIVITY GROWTH OF TRANSITION AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Rizov, Marian.
We analyze the impact of individualization on productivity growth within an augmented neo-classical growth model framework. Our estimation results using a panel data covering 15 transition countries over the period 1990-2001 and applying a GMM-IV estimator support the view that the shift to individual farming, as well as the overall economic reforms, have positively contributed to the productivity growth of transition agriculture.
