Metaplasia in swim bladder epithelium of the endangered annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) results in inadequate swimming and delayed growth Neotropical Ichthyology
Fonseca,Alinca Peres da; Volcan,Matheus Vieira; Romano,Luís Alberto; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
ABSTRACT Laboratory breeding of annual fish is often impaired when fish fail to inflate the swim bladder after hatching. These fish, which are known as belly-sliders, cannot swim in the water column, moving mainly on the bottom of water. Therefore, we wanted to understand the factors underlying failed inflation of swim bladder in the annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus and determine the implications of this condition on the growth of juveniles. To identify how the initial filling of the gaseous vesicle is compromised, and to determine the implications of this condition on juvenile growth, we analysed the histology of the swim bladder of both normal swimming fish and belly-sliders during their initial growth phase (first month of life). In addition to...

Growth of Critically Endangered annual fish Austrolebias wolterstorffi (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) at different temperatures Neotropical Ichthyology
Fonseca,Alinca Peres da; Volcan,Matheus Vieira; Sampaio,Luís André; Romano,Luís Alberto; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
Given the importance of knowledge of the biology of endangered species for the planning of conservation and management efforts, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of temperature on the growth of Austrolebias wolterstorffi (Ahl, 1924). To clarify the thermal influence on the growth of the species, temperatures of 16, 20, 24 , and 28°C were tested in triplicate. The present study showed that a water temperature of 28°C is detrimental to the growth of the species. Among the other tested temperatures, it was found that the optimum temperature for growth decreases as an individual ages and is slightly lower for females. It was demonstrated here that males reach a higher weight and length, and grow faster than females, reaching sexual...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of Bacillus cereus var. toyoi and Saccharomyces boulardii as probiotics to improve Rhamdia quelen culture. Six hundred larvaes (0.16±0.07 g) were divided in three replicate tanks (25-L recirculation, 20 ºC, photoperiod of 12 h light/12 h darkness) per treatment and were randomly assigned to the following treatments: Bacillus cereus var. toyoi; Saccharomyces boulardii; B. toyoi and S. boulardii; and control (without probiotic addition) for a period of 30 days. The fish were fed five times daily (56% crude protein - Supra alevino inicial®) and the probiotics were applied in water once a day. The doses of probiotics were <img src="/img/revistas/rbz/v41n3/aproximadamente.jpg">5 × 10(8) and <img...

Effect of temperature on growth of the threatened annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus Costa &amp; Cheffe 2001 Biota Neotropica
Volcan,Matheus Vieira; Fonseca,Alinca Peres da; Figueiredo,Mário Roberto Chim; Sampaio,Luís André; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
This study evaluated the effect of temperature on growth of Austrolebias nigrofasciatus, an endemic and threatened annual killifish species of the Patos-Mirim lagoon system in Southern Brazil. In order to verify the effect of temperature on initial growth of A. nigrofasciatus, eggs stored in the laboratory were hatched and juveniles reared for eight weeks at 16 and 22 ºC. The standard length of newly hatched fishes was 4.67 ± 0.25 mm and after eight weeks they reached 23.68 ± 3.73 and 22.68 ± 5.36 mm, respectively at 16 and 22 ºC. However, initial growth of fish reared at 22 ºC was faster and they reached sexual dimorphism at an earlier age compared to those reared at 16 ºC. Final length of females reared at 22 ºC was 23.00 ± 2.83 mm, they were...

NPY and sbGnRH gene expression in juvenile and adult male Brazilian flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus Ciência Rural
Campos,Vinicius Farias; Collares,Tiago Veiras; Seixas,Fabiana Kömmling; Deschamps,João Carlos; Marins,Luis Fernando Fernandes; Okamoto,Marcelo Hideo; Sampaio,Luís André Nassr; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
The objective of this study was to evaluate neuropeptide Y (NPY) and sea bream gonadotropin-release hormone (sbGnRH) gene expression in juvenile and adult males of Brazilian flounder. Hypothalamuses from fish were sampled for total RNA extraction. After cDNA synthesis, real-time PCR was used to measure gene expression. NPY showed approximately 2-fold increases in their mRNA levels while sbGnRH showed 3-fold increases in adult fish. These results suggest that these peptides could be involved on hypothalamic regulation of Brazilian flounder sexual maturation.

Efeito in vitro de químicos no crescimento micelial de Saprolegnia spp. Ciência Rural
Corrêa,Bruna Ferraz; Stohl,Franciele Elisa; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux; Pereira,Daniela Isabel Brayer.

Salinity on artificial reproduction of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) Ciência Rural
Martins,Gabriel Bernardes; Piedras,Sérgio Renato Noguez; Pouey,Juvêncio Luís Osório Fernandes; Bongalhardo,Denise Calisto; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
Attempting to improve reproduction performance and ichthyo prophylaxis, this study evaluated the effects of maintaining silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) broodstock in different saline concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8‰) on gametes quality and reproductive viability. The results showed that sperm percent motility did not change between 0 and 4‰, but it was reduced at 6‰, and sperm became immotile at 8‰ salinity. Sperm motility time was increased (almost five fold) at 6‰. Salinities up to 4‰ prevented fertilization and hatching, proving their deleterious effects on oocytes and embryos. Therefore, media up to 4‰ salinity may be an alternative for icthyo prophylaxis, although fertilization and incubation must be done in freshwater medium
