Selection of thermophilic and thermotolerant fungi for the production of cellulases and xylanases under solid-state fermentation BJM
Moretti,Marcia M. S.; Bocchini-Martins,Daniela A.; Silva,Roberto Da; Rodrigues,André; Sette,Lara D.; Gomes,Eleni.
Twenty-seven thermophilic and thermotolerant fungal strains were isolated from soil, decaying organic matter and sugarcane piles based on their ability to grow at 45ºC on medium containing corn straw and cardboard as carbon sources. These fungi were identified in the genera Aspergillus, Thermomyces, Myceliophthora, Thermomucor and Candida. The majority of the isolated strains produced xylanase and cellulases under solid state fermentation (SSF). The highest cellulase and xylanase productions were obtained by the cultivation of the strains identified as Aspergillus fumigatus M.7.1 and Myceliophthora thermophila M.7.7. The enzymes from these strains exhibited maximum activity at pH 5.0 and at 60 and 70ºC. The endo-glucanase from A. fumigatus was stable from...

The potential of compounds isolated from Xylaria spp. as antifungal agents against anthracnose BJM
Elias,Luciana M.; Fortkamp,Diana; Sartori,Sérgio B.; Ferreira,Marília C.; Gomes,Luiz H.; Azevedo,João L.; Montoya,Quimi V.; Rodrigues,André; Ferreira,Antonio G.; Lira,Simone P..
ABSTRACT Anthracnose is a crop disease usually caused by fungi in the genus Colletotrichum or Gloeosporium. These are considered one of the main pathogens, causing significant economic losses, such as in peppers and guarana. The current forms of control include the use of resistant cultivars, sanitary pruning and fungicides. However, even with the use of some methods of controlling these cultures, the crops are not free of anthracnose. Additionally, excessive application of fungicides increases the resistance of pathogens to agrochemicals and cause harm to human health and the environment. In order to find natural antifungal agents against guarana anthracnose, endophytic fungi were isolated from Amazon guarana. The compounds piliformic acid and...

Production and partial characterization of serine and metallo peptidases secreted by Aspergillus fumigatus Fresenius in submerged and solid state fermentatio BJM
Silva,Ronivaldo Rodrigues da; Cabral,Tatiana Pereira de Freitas; Rodrigues,André; Hamilton,Cabral.
Enzyme production varies in different fermentation systems. Enzyme expression in different fermentation systems yields important information for improving our understanding of enzymatic production induction. Comparative studies between solid-state fermentation (SSF) using agro-industrial waste wheat bran and submerged fermentation (SmF) using synthetic media were carried out to determinate the best parameters for peptidase production by the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus Fresen. Variables tested include: the concentration of carbon and protein nitrogen sources, the size of the inoculum, the pH of the media, temperature, and the length of the fermentation process. The best peptidase production during SSF was obtained after 96 hours using wheat bran at 30 ºC...

Leaf-cutting ant faecal fluid and mandibular gland secretion: effects on microfungi spore germination BJM
Rodrigues,André; Carletti,Carla D.; Bueno,Odair C.; Pagnocca,Fernando C..
The mandibular gland secretion (MGS) and the faecal fluid (FF) of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel affected the spore germination of selected microfungi isolated from nests of this insect. MGS was more effective than the FF, completely inhibiting the spore germination of four out of six microfungi species.
