On the developments of spectral wave models: numerics and parameterizations for the coastal ocean ArchiMer
Roland, Aron; Ardhuin, Fabrice.
The development of numerical wave models for coastal applications, including coupling with ocean circulation models, has spurred an ongoing effort on theoretical foundations, numerical techniques, and physical parameterizations. Some important aspects of this effort are reviewed here, and results are shown in the case of the French Atlantic and Channel coast using version 4.18 of the WAVEWATCH III R model. Compared to previous results, the model errors have been strongly reduced thanks to, among other things, the introduction of currents, coastal reflection, and bottom sediment types. This last item is described here for the first time, allowing unprecedented accuracy at some sites along the French Atlantic Coast. The adequate resolution, necessary to...

Coastal wave reflection, directional spread, and seismoacoustic noise sources ArchiMer
Ardhuin, Fabrice; Roland, Aron.
Coastal reflection is introduced in a phase-averaged numerical wave model, first with a constant coefficient, and then with a reflection coefficient defined from the shoreface slope and that depends on the incident wave height and mean frequency. This parameterization is used in both regular and unstructured grids. The calibration involves a site-specific shoreface slope that is associated with the local geomorphology of the shoreline. Using wave buoy data off Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast, it is found that coastal reflection is necessary to reproduce observed directional properties of coastal sea states. Errors on the mean directional spread are reduced by up to 30% for the frequency band 0.04 to 0.30 Hz with, at most locations, very little impact on the...

Numerical Wave Modeling in Conditions with Strong Currents: Dissipation, Refraction, and Relative Wind ArchiMer
Ardhuin, Fabrice; Roland, Aron; Dumas, Franck; Bennis, Anne-claire; Sentchev, Alexei; Forget, Philippe; Wolf, Judith; Girard, Francoise; Osuna, Pedro; Benoit, Michel.
Currents effects on waves have led to many developments in numerical wave modeling over the past two decades, from numerical choices to parameterizations. The performance of numerical models in conditions with strong currents is reviewed here, and observed strong effects of opposed currents and modulations of wave heights by tidal currents in several typical situations are interpreted. For current variations on small scales, the rapid steepening of the waves enhances wave breaking. Using different parameterizations with a dissipation rate proportional to some measure of the wave steepness to the fourth power, the results are very different, none being fully satisfactory, which points to the need for more measurements and further refinements of...

Wave-current interactions in a wave-dominated tidal inlet ArchiMer
Dodet, Guillaume; Bertin, Xavier; Bruneau, Nicolas; Fortunato, Andre B.; Nahon, Alphonse; Roland, Aron.
Wave-current interactions play a major role in the dynamics of shallow tidal inlets. This study investigates these interactions at a natural inlet, with a strong focus on current-induced changes on wave propagation. The analysis of hydrodynamic data collected at the Albufeira lagoon, Portugal, revealed spatiotemporal variations of water levels and wave heights along the inlet, attributed to wave-current interaction processes. We compared the simulations of a coupled wave-circulation modeling system, computed with and without waves, and propagated with and without current feedback. The wave-induced setup inside the lagoon represented 7%-15% of the offshore significant wave height. The accuracy of the wave's predictions improved when current feedback was...
