For the first time ever at such a spatial scale, the EPICURE project is using the complementary exosystemic, functional and fisheries approaches to analyze and compare the partially exploited fish‐populating structure of the Geyser, Zélée, and Iris banks. This project focuses on three main points, which are 1) a habitat map of the three banks and an assessment of the live coral coverage as a proxy of the Geyser bank’s health, 2) a description of fish assemblages and a functional analysis relative to habitat type and time and 3) an estimate of the abundance index in structure size of the main exploited stocks. Overall, 42 habitats over 268 km² were mapped on the Geyser bank with 534 field verifications. On the Zélée bank, 24 habitats were mapped over 183... |

Situated in the north of the Mozambique Channel, Mayotte is the easternmost island of the Comoros Archipelago. From 1998 to 2005, Grande Saziley beach was monitored daily for green turtle Chelonia mydas nesting activity. Track surveys were monitored daily on 5 other adjacent beaches. Although nesting occurs throughout the year, nesting seasonality begins at the end of the wet season and intensifies during the dry season to reach an average nesting peak in June. In order to estimate the number of females nesting in the Saziley site and population trends over the study period, incubation success and number of nests per female and per season were estimated at 0.77 (±0.05 SD) and 3.03 (±0.37) respectively. With an average of 1545 nesting turtles per year... |

Nesting green turtles Chelonia mydas were studied at Moheli Island, Union of Comoros, southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO). Five contiguous beaches near Itsamia village, in the southeastern part of the island, were monitored daily for nesting activity from January 1999 to June 2007 and irregularly between August 2009 and December 2014; nesting success was recorded from 2000 to 2006. Nesting occurred year-round and peaked in the austral winter, from March through August, with the highest values in May. During the 7 yr period when nesting success was recorded, 63164 successful nestings were reported, and the total was 69630 when estimates of missing data were included. The average rate of nesting success was 0.49 (SD = 0.04, n = 7). Using the estimate of 3.03... |

Endogenous and environmental variables are fundamental in explaining variations in fish condition. Based on more than 20 yr of fish weight and length data, relative condition indices were computed for anchovy and sardine caught in the Gulf of Lions. Classification and regression trees (CART) were used to identify endogenous factors affecting fish condition, and to group years of similar condition. Both species showed a similar annual cycle with condition being minimal in February and maximal in July. CART identified 3 groups of years where the fish populations generally showed poor, average and good condition and within which condition differed between age classes but not according to sex. In particular, during the period of poor condition (mostly recent... |

Marine turtles are renowned long-distance navigators, able to reach remote targets in the oceanic environment; yet the sensory cues and navigational mechanisms they employ remain unclear [1-3]. Recent arena experiments indicated an involvement of magnetic cues in juvenile turtles' homing ability after simulated displacements [4, 5], but the actual role of geomagnetic information in guiding turtles navigating in their natural environment has remained beyond the reach of experimental investigations. In the present experiment, twenty satellite-tracked green turtles (Chelonia mydas) were transported to four open-sea release sites 100-120 km from their nesting beach on Mayotte island in the Mozambique Channel; 13 of them had magnets attached to their head [6]... |

A diagnosis of recreational fisheries is carried out each year on the reef flat area of the Hermitage / La Saline managed by the Natural Marine Reserve of Reunion. The evolution of beach seine, fishing-rod and stick fishing activities, in terms of fishing effort and catch was analyzed. The status of exploited stocks differs according to the fishing technique. In 2018, the annual trend of catch per unit of effort indices showed 1°) an increase in the abundances of goatfish fished with beach seine, 2°) a relative stability with the fishing-rod practice and 3°) a constant decrease in octopus yields for stick fishermen. The honeycomb groupers size structure, targeted by fishing-rod fishermen, has improved. Octopus showed a decrease of larger specimens. Thus,... |

Monitoring the abundance of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) is necessary to assess population trends and risks of collapse. This note presents a study aimed at comparing three techniques for the direct estimation of green turtle numbers in their foraging habitats (seagrass beds and reef flats). The experiment was carried out at Mayotte Island, Western Indian Ocean. The techniques involved were surveys by snorkel, and aerial surveys using a microlight aircraft and a paramotor. Each technique had shortcomings and advantages. While each technique provided estimations of turtle numbers only surveys by snorkel permitted identification of species and sex, whenever visibility and turtle behaviour permitted. Along the shorelines, and over foraging areas, the... |

Identification of potential juvenile grounds of short-lived species such as European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in relation to the environment is a crucial issue for effective management. In the current work, habitat suitability modelling was applied to acoustic data derived from both the western and eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. Early summer acoustic data of sardine juveniles were modelled using generalized additive models along with satellite environmental and bathymetry data. Selected models were used to construct maps that exhibit the probability of presence in the study areas, as well as throughout the entire Mediterranean basin, as a measure of habitat adequacy. Areas with high probability of supporting sardine juvenile presence... |

Data on the potential exploitation of deep demersal fish species in Reunion Island are very limited. The Regional Comitee for Sea Fisheries and Marine Breeding, with the scientific and technical support of Ifremer of La Reunion, has launched prospecting campaigns to identify and characterize deep-sea fish species (between 150 to 600 m deep), with an innovative method of catching with electric reel. The catches made concern mainly 5 main species (yields, frequency of catch, commercial interest). A new species, the brillant pomfret (Eumegistus illustris), as well as the longtail red snapper (Etelis coruscans), are the both main resources that can be exploited by the electric reel technique. They represent more than 60% of the overall catches made during the... |

The ability of captive-reared turtles to survive in the wild is not precisely known, nor are movements of immature turtles in the open ocean. To provide information on these issues, a satellite tracking experiment was conducted in the western Indian Ocean to monitor oceanic movements of immature green turtles. Two wild turtles and four captive-reared individuals were tracked. The latter had been displaced after birth from nesting sites to a distant rearing site. Wild turtles survived after release, but did not move far away from release site. We hypothesize that this resident behaviour may be explained by stage-specific habitat requirements. Captive-reared turtles survived after release and migrated over thousands of kilometres. Among these, the oldest... |

The main characteristics of the biology of bigeye scad were studied from commercial fishery catches around Reunion Island. Biometric relationships were calculated. The monitoring of size distribution, aggregated by month, allowed us to estimate the theoretical growth equation using the ELEFAN software. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were adjusted with a seasonal modulation: L8 = 265 mm; K = 1.64 year-1; c = 0.068; ? = 0.38. The growth of the cohort was quite high during the austral summer (November-April) and decreased during the austral winter (May-October). The arrival of a new cohort with homogeneous small sizes (65 to 90 mm) in the fishery in November coincided with the disappearance of large individuals. A feature of the reproductive biology... |

The oblique-banded grouper, Epinephelus radiatus (Day, 1968), occurred within the whole Indo- West Pacific where it is harvested by small-scale coastal fisheries. The aim of this study was to estimate the growth of this species at Reunion Island (South-West Indian Ocean) since no study investigated this topic so far. Fifty-seven individuals were sampled in the landings of the French local artisanal fisheries from March 2014 to March 2015. The relationships between two types of body length (total and standard lengths, cm) and total weight (g) were significant (p < 0.05). Total length-weight relationship was described by the following parameters: a = 0.01 and b = 3.098. For each individual, morphometry of the whole otolith was described with several... |

This study summarizes the results of the processing and analysis of data from illegal fisheries, apprehended by the eco-guards of the Marine Natural Reserve of Reunion from 2015 to 2017 (including the first dataset from 2018). These information are valued in terms of fisheries and bioecological knowledge for reef fish species. Thus, both diversity and abundance indices, size structures, growth parameters, stock characterization, can be apprehended from the biological parameters collected on all the species caught because they often do not exist : the sizes, weights, sexes, maturities, scales, otoliths, stomach contents as well as genetic and isotopic samples. These indices would contribute to a better diagnosis of the status and the sensitivity of stocks... |

Patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation were used to analyse the population genetic structure of southwestern Indian Ocean green turtle (Chelonia mydas) populations. Analysis of sequence variation over 396 bp of the mtDNA control region revealed seven haplotypes among 288 individuals from 10 nesting sites in the Southwest Indian Ocean. This is the first time that Atlantic Ocean haplotypes have been recorded among any Indo-Pacific nesting populations. Previous studies indicated that the Cape of Good Hope was a major biogeographical barrier between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans because evidence for gene flow in the last 1.5 million years has yet to emerge. This study, by sampling localities adjacent to this barrier, demonstrates that recent gene... |

We describe the total lipid content, lipid class composition and fatty acid profiles of adult forage fishes (anchovy, sardine and sprat) sampled in the NW Mediterranean Sea in 2010 and 2011. Inter-and intra-species differences were mostly related to sampling period with limited effect of gender or total length. As an assemblage, total lipid content and relative levels of triacylglycerols and fatty acids 16:1n7, 20:5n3 and 14:0 in forage fish were highest in summer and autumn, indicating better feeding conditions and a more pronounced diatom-supported food web. In contrast, total lipid content was lowest at the end of winter and spring, and coincided with high levels of 22:6n3, indicating a more herbivorous diet based on dinoflagellates. Resource... |
