Case studies of the marketing of products from newly bred lines and underutilized crops Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Rossi, Adanella; D'Amico, Simona; Sellars, Anna; Oehen, Bernadette.
The overall aim of Task 5.1 of the Diversifood project is to produce recommendations and guidelines for the marketing and valorisation strategies of biodiverse food products, including products from underutilized crops and based on newly-bred lines from participatory plant breeding. The work presented here identifies success and critical factors of existing initiatives, analysing the whole process of value-adding and communication from the genetic resource to the food product. A common case study approach was used by national teams in eight countries, involving around 180 interviews with various actors of each initiative, including producers and a diversity of other supply chain actors and consumers. Results of the comparative analysis are presented into...

Guidance Document and Considerations for the Marketing of Biodiverse Food Products Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Padel, Susanne; Rossi, Adanella.
The prevailing food supply chains are characterised by a highly standardised food offer produced in an impoverished agricultural system. The loss of diversity in food production is not only a loss of crop species and varieties but also a loss of taste, culture and knowledge and adaptability to a changing environment. This booklet is intended to contribute to a transformation of this system by supporting the use of the biological diversity of cultures. It aims at supporting practitioners that want to enhance crop genetic diversity in agricultural systems and increase the link between consumers and producers. Moreover, the booklet contains a compilation of all the lessons learned from the valorisation of crop genetic diversity during the European research...

Diversified food system: Policy to embedding crop genetic diversity in food value chains Organic Eprints
Feher, Judit; Padel, Susanne; Rossi, Adanella; Drexler, Dora; Oehen, Bernadette.
Current food systems and associated agricultural practices have led to a loss of crop diversity. The widespread adoption of genetically uniform crop varieties may also increase the vulnerability of production systems and reduce their adaptability to new environmental challenges. DIVERSIFOOD has explored different approaches aimed at increasing crop genetic diversity, and as a result, make biodiverse food available to consumers. These approaches have the potential to promote sustainable, locally adapted farming systems, provide autonomy to farmers, support local short and fair supply chains and reconnect farmers and consumers. In order to support these approaches, the following policy changes are needed: 1) The legal status of heterogeneous cultivars...
