Solutes derived from the dissolution of silicate minerals play a key role in Earth’s climate via the carbon and other biogeochemical cycles. Silicon (Si) is a unique constituent of silicate minerals and a biologically important nutrient, so tracing its behavior in near-surface environments may provide important insights into weathering processes. However, Si released by weathering is variably incorporated into secondary mineral phases and biota, obscuring signals derived from primary weathering processes. Due to chemical similarities, Germanium (Ge) may help better understand the Si cycle and its relationship to chemical weathering. With this aim, we report new measurements of the concentration and isotopic composition of Ge for both the dissolved and... |

Iron and sulfur isotope compositions recorded in ancient rocks and minerals such as pyrite (FeS2) have been widely used as a proxy for early microbial metabolisms and redox evolution of the oceans. However, most previous studies focused on only one of these isotopic systems. Herein, we illustrate the importance of in-situ and coupled study of Fe and S isotopes on two pyrite nodules in a c. 2.7 Ga shale from the Bubi Greenstone Belt (Zimbabwe). Fe and S isotope compositions were measured both by bulk-sample mass spectrometry techniques and by ion microprobe in-situ methods (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, SIMS). Spatially-resolved analysis across the nodules shows a large range of variations at micrometer-scale for both Fe and S isotope compositions, with... |

The response of the ocean redox state to the rise of atmospheric oxygen about 2.3 billion years ago (Ga) is a matter of controversy. Here we provide iron isotope evidence that the change in the ocean iron cycle occurred at the same time as the change in the atmospheric redox state. Variable and negative iron isotope values in pyrites older than about 2.3 Ga suggest that an iron-rich global ocean was strongly affected by the deposition of iron oxides. Between 2.3 and 1.8 Ga, positive iron isotope values of pyrite likely reflect an increase in the precipitation of iron sulfides relative to iron oxides in a redox stratified ocean. |

Interbedded chert-rich exhalite and graphitic argillite are the only sedimentary rocks deposited in deep-water settings during long-lived hiatuses in mafic to ultramafic volcanism within the Hart area of the Shaw Dome in the Late Archean Abitibi greenstone belt in Canada. The Fe oxide- and sulfide-bearing, but predominantly cherty, exhalite lithological unit in the Hart area can be traced laterally to iron formation elsewhere in the Shaw Dome. Whole-rock as well as Fe and S isotope geochemistry suggest that the exhalite unit was formed as a result of direct precipitation from seawater, distally from hydrothermal centres. Fractionation of Fe isotopes through the precipitation of iron oxyhydroxides in a neutrally buoyant hydrothermal plume removed the... |

Red beds are extensively used as evidence for an oxygenated atmosphere in the Paleoproterozoic. Red beds in the unmetamorphosed, ca. 2.15 Ga FA Formation of the Franceville Basin, Gabon were geochemically, petrographically, and mineralogically characterized to constrain the process of their formation and their relationship to atmospheric oxygenation in the early Paleoproterozoic. Petrographic observations indicate that ferric oxides are dispersed in clay filling intergranular pores and along platy cleavage in altered phyllosilicates. Grain-coating hematite is generally rare to absent in most samples suggesting hematite precipitation after sediment deposition and during burial diagenesis. Textures and geochemical data suggest that iron was likely sourced... |

Glacial environments offer the opportunity to study the incipient stages of chemical weathering due to the high availability of finely ground sediments, low water temperatures, and typically short rock-water interaction times. In this study we focused on the geochemical behavior of germanium (Ge) in west Greenland, both during subglacial weathering by investigating glacier-fed streams, as well as during a batch reactor experiment by allowing water-sediment interaction for up to 2 years in the laboratory. Sampled in late August 2014, glacial stream Ge and Si concentrations were low, ranging between 12–55 pmol/L and 7–33 µmol/L, respectively (Ge/Si = 0.9–2.2 µmol/mol, similar to parent rock). As reported previously, the dissolved stable Ge isotope ratio... |

Organic matter plays an important role in the transport and precipitation of germanium (Ge) in coal-hosted Ge deposits. In this paper. Ge isotopes of coal samples and their combustion products were analyzed in order to investigate the potential use of Ge isotopes as tracers of Ge sources and enrichment mechanisms in coal. Germanium isotopic composition of various samples (mainly Ge-rich lignite) from the Lincang Ge deposit, Yunnan, Southwest China was analyzed using a continuous flow hydride generation system coupled to a Multi Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS) and the standard-sample bracketing approach. Variations of (74)Ge/(70)Ge ratios are expressed as delta(74)Ge values relative to NIST SRM 3120a Ge standard solution.... |

Colloids have been recognized as key vectors of pollutants in aqueous environment. Amongst them, those formed by iron (Fe) and organic matter (OM) are of major importance due to their ubiquity in the surface environment and strong affinity for metals. In the recent years, Fe stable isotopes have been increasingly used to elucidate the sources and biogeochemical cycling of Fe in Earth's surface environments. In this study, we aim to elucidate (i) the possible Fe isotopic signature resulting from the Fe/OM colloid formation and (ii) the mechanisms involved in the development of such isotopic signature. For this purpose, Fe-OM associations were synthesized through binding and titration experiments. Various pH levels were used in order to study the isotope... |

Germanium (Ge) and Silicon (Si) exhibit similar geochemical behaviour in marine environments but are variably enriched in seafloor hydrothermal fluids relative to seawater. In this study, Ge isotope and Ge/Si ratio systematics were investigated in low temperature hydrothermal vents from Loihi Seamount (Pacific Ocean, 18°54’N, 155°15’W) and results were compared to high-temperature vents from the East Pacific Rise (EPR) at 9°50’N. Loihi offers the opportunity to understand contrasting Ge and Si behaviour in low temperature seafloor hydrothermal systems characterized by abundant Fe oxyhydroxide deposition at the seafloor. The results show that both Ge/Si and δ74/70Ge in hydrothermal fluids are fractionated relative to the basaltic host rocks. The enrichment... |

Vertical distributions of iron (Fe) concentrations and isotopes were determined in the total dissolvable and dissolved pools in the water column at three coastal stations located along the Peruvian margin, in the core of the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ). The shallowest station 121 (161 m total water depth) was characterized by lithogenic input from the continental plateau, yielding concentrations as high as 456 nM in the total dissolvable pool. At the 2 other stations (stations 122 and 123), Fe concentrations of dissolved and total dissolvable pools exhibited maxima in both surface and deep layers. Fe isotopic composition (δ56Fe) showed a fractionation toward lighter values for both physical pools throughout the water column for all stations with minimum... |

Low-temperature hydrothermal vents, such as those encountered at Loihi Seamount, harbor abundant microbial communities and provide ideal systems to test hypotheses on biotic versus abiotic formation of hydrous ferric oxide (FeOx) deposits at the seafloor. Hydrothermal activity at Loihi Seamount produces abundant microbial mats associated with rust-colored FeOx deposits and variably encrusted with Mn-oxyhydroxides. Here, we applied Fe isotope systematics together with major and trace element geochemistry to study the formation mechanisms and preservation of such mineralized microbial mats. Iron isotope composition of warm (< 60 °C), Fe-rich and H2S-depleted hydrothermal fluids yielded δ56Fe values near +0.1 ‰, indistinguishable from basalt values.... |

Atmospheric forcing, which is known to have a strong influence on surface ocean dynamics and production, is typically not considered in studies of the deep sea. Our observations and models demonstrate an unexpected influence of surface-generated mesoscale eddies in the transport of hydrothermal vent efflux and of vent larvae away from the northern East Pacific Rise. Transport by these deep-reaching eddies provides a mechanism for spreading the hydrothermal chemical and heat flux into the deep-ocean interior and for dispersing propagules hundreds of kilometers between isolated and ephemeral communities. Because the eddies interacting with the East Pacific Rise are formed seasonally and are sensitive to phenomena such as El Nino, they have the potential to... |

Although initial studies have demonstrated the applicability of Ni isotopes for cosmochemistry and as a potential biosignature, the Ni isotope composition of terrestrial igneous and sedimentary rocks, and ore deposits remains poorly known. Our contribution is fourfold: (a) to detail an analytical procedure for Ni isotope determination, (b) to determine the Ni isotope composition of various geological reference materials, (c) to assess the isotope composition of the Bulk Silicate Earth relative to the Ni isotope reference material NIST SRM 986 and (d) to report the range of mass-dependent Ni isotope fractionations in magmatic rocks and ore deposits. After purification through a two-stage chromatography procedure, Ni isotope ratios were measured by MC-ICP-MS... |

The early Paleoproterozoic witnessed Earth's first major oxygenation, referred to as the Great Oxidation Event or GOE. The GOE began around 2.45 billion years ago (Ga) and progressed over hundreds of millions of years, as evidenced by multiple redox indicators, before coming to an abrupt end by ca. 2.06 Ga. The details of the GOE and the extent of oxygenation are still not resolved, however, and it is not dear how redox conditions across the GOE compare with those during the middle Proterozoic. In order to investigate the evolution of deep-ocean redox conditions during the GOE, we present Mo concentration and isotope data together with Fe speciation values for three key organic matter-rich shale units of the early Paleoproterozoic age (2.32-2.06 Ga). In... |

The large manganese (Mn) deposit at Obrochishte (NE Bulgaria) is part of a cluster of similar Early Oligocene deposits located around present-day Black Sea. They collectively constitute the Earth’s second largest endowment of Mn, after the Kalahari Manganese Field in Africa. We have employed a battery of isotopic techniques (C, O, Fe, Sr, Nd, Pb) to help understand the genesis of this deposit. Carbon isotope data indicates that some sections of the Mn-ore layer have diagenetic MnCO3 mineralization, formed by reaction of Mn oxides with organic carbon (Corg), whereas other sections have MnCO3 precipitated directly from the seawater column. Oxygen isotopes show that the high-grade Mn mineralization had seawater as the fluid source, whereas some lower-grade... |

Although Ni isotopes have been shown to be significantly fractionated in terrestrial samples, their use in continental environmental studies has not yet been evaluated. The present study focuses on an ultramafic (UM) massif (Barro Alto, Goias, Brazil) because such areas are naturally rich in Ni. We present developed lateritic weathering profiles. The goal of the study is to evaluate the potential of using Ni isotopes in environmental continental studies by combining its isotopic signature with mineralogy, in order to better understand the geochemical cycling of Ni in UM settings during weathering. As such, Ni isotope values were measured in samples from the Barro Alto UM complex in the main stages of the lateritic weathering profile of UM rocks, including... |
