| The impact of beef imports on United States meat prices is a highly emotional and controversial issue. Congressmen representing urban districts, and to a lesser extent the Administration, look towards beef imports as a way of containing rapid increases in meat prices. Congressmen and Senators from beef-producing States regard beef imports as a direct attack on the U.S. beef-producing industry. These differing views are being reconciled through Congress considering amendments to the Meat Import Law (Public Law 88-482). | An analysis of wheat yield series from ten localities in Victoria was undertaken to investigate for independence of observations and to test for normality of the distributions. The conclusion was reached that Victorian wheat yield series are composed of random observations and form frequency distributions which display slight negative skewness. The situation may be different for other crops or for wheat in other areas. |

| An input demand model was used to estimate the own price elasticity of dairy herd recording in Victoria. The net benefits to society over a 21 year period were estimated by determining the economic surplus accruing to participators each year and then subtracting all Government monies involved. The net social benefits, unlike the benefits reported for the New South Wales scheme, have on average been positive and have been consistently positive over the latter years of the data. |

| Stabilization schemes for the Australian wheat industry, or marketing schemes as they are now called, first came into existence in 1914 when the Commonwealth Government exercised powers under the War Precautions Act and set up an Australian Wheat Board to acquire the crop, fix purchase prices, allocate shipping and make advance payments to growers on delivery of wheat. This first scheme was replaced by voluntary co-operatives and private trading between the two World Wars. A new Australian Wheat Board was set up again in 1939. | The 1989 Wheat Marketing Act has set in motion forces, in particular the deregulation of the domestic market for wheat and the establishment of the Wheat Industry Fund, which have irrevocably altered the way in which wheat and other grains are marketed in Australia. This article examines these forces and subsequent developments and seeks to address which marketing structure is best suited to maximise the position of Australian growers into the next century. Using some tenets drawn from industrial organisation economics, the international grain market and the current Australian system are discussed. | A standard model of behavior under uncertainty is used to suggest price risk variables for use in a positive supply study. The suggested variables are intuitively appealing and empirically tested on Pinto bean data. Linearity is assumed and O.L.S. used. The empirical results show that the risk variables greatly improve the statistical fit of the supply equation, are quantitatively important and that a substantial bias occurs if they are neglected. Policy initiatives to reduce Pinto bean price fluctuations need to consider the risk reducing effects on the supply response. |

| A simple model of the cereal harvest operation was constructed for the Wimmera region of Victoria. The model was used to investigate factors influential in determining the harvesting costs of a machinery system over a period of years. An evaluation of alternative machinery systems was also conducted using the model. The superiority of systems simulation over static analysis was demonstrated by using the model to incorporate stochastic variables and to handle the dynamic nature of the harvest operation. In addition, the model output was shown to provide more information for decision makers than had resulted from previous Australian studies.
