Labour and machinery systems in organic farming Organic Eprints
Sørensen, C.G.; Nielsen, V..
In order to analyse and evaluate the future development of organic farming in Denmark efforts are needed to extend and improve the data on labour and machinery input. Previous investigations have not been able, in a uniquely way, to describe the labour requirement related to factors like farm type, type of production, level of mechanisation, etc. Existing modelling approaches on labour demand and machinery input, used for conventional farms, has only been scarcely used on organic farming systems. There is a need for a systematic analysis of the technical operational consequences and subsequent prognosis of the labour requirement, capacity, and labour profiles for specific organic production systems, including the evaluation of innovative cropping and...

Scenarieanalyser vedr. driftsteknisk indsats i økologisk jordbrug Organic Eprints
Nielsen, V.; Sørensen, C.G.; Mortensen, H.S..
I forbindelse med projektet "Economic analyses of the future development of organic farming.

An autonomous robot for feeding outdoor pigs Organic Eprints
Andersen, B.H.; Kristensen, E.K.; Jensen, H.F.; Persson, A.; Jørgensen, R.N.; Sørensen, C.G.; Jensen, K.; Pedersen, J.M..
The objective of this is to develop a rational feeding technique for outdoor pigs and at the same time improve the outdoor system with regard to environmental impact and health. For a rational and competitive free ranch system ensuring high animal welfare and low environmental strain automation is crucial.

Conceptual and user-centric design guidelines for a plant nursing robot Organic Eprints
Sørensen, C.G.; Jørgensen, R.N.; Maagaard, J.; Bertelsen, K.K.; Dalgaard, L.; Nørremark, M..
Current service robots have relatively primitive behaviours and limited interaction with the environment. Technological foresights have indicated that the next generation of service robots will demonstrate a high degree of autonomy and reliability, have minimal impact on the environment, and will interact in a flexible way with the user. It is necessary therefore, to determine the functional requirements for a future energy-efficient robotic bioproduction system from the perspective of various stakeholders, together with the development of a high-level framework for designing and prototyping the common functionalities of mobile robots. This study presents technical guidelines for the design of a plant nursing robot. The methodology uses Quality Function...

Robotic weed monitoring Organic Eprints
Bochtis, D.D.; Sørensen, C.G.; Jørgensen, R.N.; Nørremark, M.; Hameed, I.A.; Swain, K.C..
In this paper, an integrated management system for the planning and activation of a field monitoring task is presented. The architecture of the system is built around a mobile robotic unit. The internet-based architecture of the system includes a station unit that works as a mobile on-farm operating console, the mobile robotic unit and a field server for generating and storing maps. The hypothesis is that it is possible to automate the planning and execution of the operation of monitoring the in-field weed density and species distribution. The developed planning system includes the automatic field geometrical representation and the route planning for the mobile unit. For the field representation two algorithmic approaches for automated track generation...

Labour and machinery analysis in organic farming Organic Eprints
Sørensen, C.G.; Nielsen, V..
Organic farming is generally considered to require more labour than conventional farming, as the assumption is that chemical inputs are substituted by factors like new knowledge, practices and labour. However, the overall effect on labour and machinery usage when carrying out a transition from conventional to organic farming depends in a complex way of the type of production, different farm-specific factors, etc. In order to investigate the labour usage in organic farming as compared with conventional farming an integrated approach involving labour budgeting, labour profiles, labour quality, etc. has to be applied.

FeederAnt - An autonomous mobile unit feeding outdoor pigs Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, R.N.; Sørensen, C.G.; Jensen, H.F.; Andersen, B.H.; Kristensen, E.F.; Jensen, K.; Maagaard, J.; Persson, A..
Small robots and the concept of decentralized animal husbandry make it possible to renew the principles of organic agriculture. The farm animals will be able to use the same type of housing and are placed integrated with the fields. This is expected to achieve a better utilization of nutrients and a better survival rate for useful insects and micro organisms. The small fields are flexible and could fit to the variation in soil structure topography. This type of precision agriculture has the possibility of increasing biodiversity. The paper presents the concept of an autonomic feeding system for outdoor piglets. Initial results are presented using a remote controlled feeding unit (a prototype of the FeederAnt) to feed several pens with piglets. The...
