Influence of grouping strategy on welfare measurements of organic entire male pigs Organic Eprints
Thomsen, Rikke; Rousing, Tine; Edwards, Sandra A; Labouriau, R.; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
Alternatives to surgical castration in organic pig production are needed, due to stress and pain caused by castration of male pigs. One alternative, which is in accordance with the values in organic farming, is production of entire male pigs. However, changed behaviour of entires compared to castrates might affect the welfare of the animals. Therefore, in order to produce entire male pigs, without compromised animal welfare, changes in the production system, possible offered by the organic farming system, with e.g. more available space and access to rooting material and roughage, might be a necessity. The aim of this article is to investigate the effect of grouping strategy and group size on levels of mounting behaviour and skin lesions, hypothesising that...

Sow level risk factors for stillbirth of piglets in organic sow herds Organic Eprints
Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena; Krogh, Mogens Agerbo; Pedersen, L.J.; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
In Danish organic pig production, one-third af total bom piglets die befare weaning, and stillbirth has previously crudely been estimated to account for 2 7% af the total preweaning mortality. The objective af this study was to evaluate season, litter size, parity and body condition af the sow as risk factors for stillbirth in nine commercial Danish organic pig herds. The study was conducted over a 1-year period, and the data included registrations an 5170 farrowings with 82 906 total bom piglets. The average number af total bom piglets per titter was 16. 0, and the number af stil/bom piglets per titter was 1.1. A significant effect af season was seen with an odds ratio for stillbirth af 1. 15 during summer (May to August) compared with the remaining part...

Skarbye, Alice P.; Krogh, Mogens A.; Sørensen, Jan Tind.

Animal health and welfare in organic Euro-pean pig production: State of the art and challenges for the future, based on a North-western European questionnaire survey Organic Eprints
Bonde, Marianne; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
Sixty organic pig producers from Denmark, UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden have completed a questionnaire concerning health and welfare problems in organic sow herds. Half the farmers perceived they had a problem with piglet mortality. The most common cause of death was crushing of piglets by the sow, but also piglets that were weak at birth and shortage of milk in the sow caused problems in many herds. Weaning diarrhoea concerned 25 % of the farmers, mainly in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands; and respiratory diseases caused prob-lems in 43 % of the farms, especially in the Nether-lands. Diarrhoea was the major cause of death in Danish weaned pigs; in the Netherlands they were more likely to die from respiratory diseases, while insufficient...

Weight and season affects androstenone and skatole occurence in entire male pigs in organic pig production Organic Eprints
Thomsen, Rikke; Edwards, Sandra E; Jensen, Bent Borg; Rousing, Tine; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
To investigate the extent to which the level of androstenone and skatole decreases with a decrease in live weight and/or age at slaughter of entire male pigs produced under organic standards, 1174 entire male pigs were raised in parallel in 5 organic herds, distributed across 4 batches in summer and winter. The median androstenone level was high for organic entire male pigs (1.9 µg/g), but varied greatly both within and between herds. Median skatole level was 0.05 µg/g, also with a wide range both within and between herds. Decreasing live weight over the range of 110±15.6 kg sd was found to decrease androstenone as well as skatole concentration, however, with different patterns of association. Age did not have significant direct effect on either...

Control of health and welfare problems in organic sow herds Organic Eprints
Bonde, Marianne; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
The occurrence of health and welfare problems is probably different in organic pig herds compared to conventional production systems. Improved management in the individual herd may reduce problems and to ensure a high level of animal health and product safety it is necessary to be able to monitor and assess risk factors present in the herd. An expert panel of 10 Danish and Swedish veterinarians and pig production advisers has assisted in the selection of common health and welfare problems in organic pig herds and the identification of risk factors. Important health and welfare problems and the corresponding risk factors are presented in the text. Based on this a HACCP programme for organic pig farmers as a management tool is currently being developed.

Herd health surveillance and management in an integrated HACCP based system Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Jan Tind; Bonde, Marianne; Rousing, Tine; Møller, Steen Henrik.
Future herd health management systems need to focus on precaution and documentation of how product and process failures are prevented. HACCP-based herd health surveillance schemes have been developed for dairy cattle herds, organic pig and egg production systems and for mink production in Denmark. The generic part of such systems, including definition of hazards and risk factors, can be developed through expert opinion panels. The development of sets of control points, alarm values and corrective actions need typically to be farm specific. On-farm systems focusing on broad topics such as animal welfare and food safety tend to grow too big to be operational. It is suggested that a part of the system is controlled through ‘good management practice’ leaving...

Effect of pig production system and transport on the potential pathogen transfer risk into the food chain from Salmonella shed in pig faeces Organic Eprints
Bonde, Marianne; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
The prevalence of faecal Salmonella shedding has been compared in organic, conventional outdoor, and indoor finishing pig herds in a Danish survey with participation of 34 herds. Individual faecal and meat juice samples were collected from 30-50 pigs per herd and analysed for presence of Salmonella, and Salmonella antibodies, respectively. The results showed a low level of on-farm Salmonella shedding (<0,2 %) in organic and conventional outdoor herds compared to 2,5 % in indoor pigs (P<0,0001), and also a lower prevalence of Salmonella shedding in outdoor systems at slaughter (<2 %) compared to 4,1 % in indoor systems (P<0,01). The overall seroprevalence was 8,5 % with no significant differences between systems. Seropositivity was a significant...

Effect of faecal soiling on skatole and androstenone occurence in organic entire male pigs Organic Eprints
Thomsen, Rikke; Edward, Sandra E.; Jensen, Bent Borg; Rousing, Tine; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
Production of entire male pigs could be a future strategy for organic pig production. However, production of entire males leads to increased risk of carcasses with elevated boar taint levels. It is hypothesized that skatole levels in pig meat are affected by soiling with manure and that organic housing facilities can increase the risk of pigs being heavily soiled. Therefore the overall aim of this study was to investigate if increased pig and pen soiling increases skatole concentration in entire male pigs. In 5 herds, 1174 organic entire male pigs were reared in four batches across two seasons, summer and winter. Measurements of pig and pen soiling, as well as fat skatole and androstenone concentration and human sensory tests of fat odour, were performed....

Risk of Salmonella shedding in different pig production systems Organic Eprints
Bonde, Marianne; Zheng, Dong Mei; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
The objective of this paper is to describe the Salmonella transfer risk in different conventional and organic pig production systems. Twelve organic, 12 conventional outdoor and 12 conventional indoor herds participated in the investigation. Faecal sam-ples from approximately 50 pigs per herd collected before and after transport to the abattoir were ana-lysed for density of Salmonella, and meat juice sam-ples from the pigs were analysed for antibodies against S. enterica. The results showed that 9,5 % of the organic and 8,1 % of the conventional outdoor pigs were seropositive, but they were unlikely to shed Salmonella on-farm, and less than 1,9 % of the pigs were shedding Salmonella at the abattoir. The indoor pigs had a seroprevalence of 6,8 %, and 2,6 %...

Sow level risk factors for early piglet mortality and crushing in organic outdoor production. Organic Eprints
Rangstrup-Christensen, Lena; Krogh, Mogens Agerbo; Pedersen, L.J.; Sørensen, Jan Tind.
Piglet mortality is a major problem in organic pig production affecting both farm economy and animal welfare. Knowledge is scarce on the risk factors of piglet mortality in Danish commercial organic pig production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate season, litter size, parity, sow body condition and stillborn littermates as risk factors for early piglet mortality and crushing of liveborn piglets from parturition until castration at day 3 to 5 postpartum (pp). The study was conducted over a 1-year period in nine commercial Danish organic pig herds practicing outdoor farrowing all year round. Data included recordings on 3393 farrowings with 50 284 liveborn piglets of which 14.8% died before castration. A subset of the dead piglets were collected...
