MASSIVE QUANTITIES OF PELAGIC Sargassum ON THE SHORES OF SAN ANDRES ISLAND, SOUTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN Acta biol.Colomb.
GAVIO,Brigitte; RINCÓN-DÍAZ,M. Natalia; SANTOS-MARTÍNEZ,Adriana.
We report an unusual biomass of floating Sargassum, composed of the species S. fluitans and S. natans, that reached the northeastern coast of San Andres island in September 2014. The time and size of the event is unprecedented to the island.

POTENTIAL RESPONSE OF CORAL REEF'S FUNCTIONAL STRUCTURE AND SNAPPER ABUNDANCE TO ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN SAN ANDRES ISLAND, COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
GONZÁLEZ-GAMBOA,Isabella; SANTOS-MARTÍNEZ,Adriana; HERRERA-MARTÍNEZ,Yimy.
ABSTRACT To determine the coral reefmorpho-functional structure of San Andrés, regarding functional benthic diversity and fish (Lutjanidae), we evaluated the condition of the coral structure on the leeward side of the island, which is an area impacted by tourism, through diving and fishing. Three sampling sites were evaluated during two years recording the distribution of benthic organisms, environmental variables and Snappers density (Lutjanidae). A low density of Lutjanusjocu and Ocyurus chrysurus was found, with a high density ofjuveniles of L. apodus and L. mahogoni, which showed a preference for reefs with submassive and brain corals. Algae especially Macroalgae and octocorals were those with the greatest coverage in the reefs, followed by inert...

FLOATING Sargassum IN SERRANILLA BANK, CARIBBEAN COLOMBIA, MAY JEOPARDIZE THE RACE TO THE OCEAN OF BABY SEA TURTLES Acta biol.Colomb.
GAVIO,Brigitte; SANTOS-MARTÍNEZ,Adriana.
ABSTRACT We report for the first time great quantities of floating Sargassum to Serranilla Bank, in the Central Caribbean. The island is an important nesting site for sea turtles, and by the time the Sargassum wave arrived, the baby turtles were disclosing. Due to the thick mat of Sargassum along the beach, the baby turtles may have troubles to reach the ocean.
