In several regions in Europe, the horse is becoming a common grazer in semi-natural and cultivated grasslands, though the pasturing benefits for animals and biodiversity alike are not universally appreciated. The composition of ground vegetation on pastures determines the value of both the forage for grazing animals as well as the biodiversity values for species associated with the pastoral ecosystems. We studied three pastures, each representing one of the management types in Southern Finland (latitudes 60-61): semi-natural, permanent and cultivated grassland. All have been grazed exclusively by horses for several decades. Se aimed to evaluate feeding values and horses' welfare, on the one hand, and impacts of horses on biodiversity in boreal conditions,... |

Choose of the bedding material is important especially in the Northern climate conditions, because the horses are kept most part of the day and year indoors during their life. Especially, the effect of the bedding material on the quality of the stable air is of great importance. Based on their properties, it seems that peat and straw pellets are the most suitable beddings for horse stables. Also pelleted newspaper seems to have a good potential as a bedding material. |

Feeding horses outdoors in winter and cold climate presents a challenge to horse owners and stable managers. Low temperatures, harsh winds and rain, snow and ice all contribute to the increasing nutrient requirements a horse has to keep themselves warm and maintain their body weight. The most challenging is to feed young growing horses – the largest group of horses kept in loose stables - the focus being on the energy demands of the horse. When the climatic energy demands are taken into account, also the weanling horses can maintain their body condition and proper growth (Autio, 2008). Although horses are fed in groups, their individual needs have to be considered applying individual feeding. Some studies show both breed and individual differences... |
