Dynamic Analysis and Forecasts of Rough Rice Price under Government Price Support Program: An Application of Bayesian VAR AgEcon

This study constructs a Bayesian VAR model of US rice prices, in conjunction with supply and demand functions. Various validation tests are conducted to examine whether or not the BVAR model satisfies its dual functionality: Providing a dynamic analysis of the effects of a price support program and generating reasonable short-term rice price forecasts.

INCORPORATION OF WITHIN-SEASON YIELD GROWTH INTO A MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING SUGARCANE HARVEST SCHEDULING MODEL AgEcon

This study focuses on the development of a optimal harvest scheduling mathematical programming model which incorporates within-season changes in perennial crop yields. Daily crop yield prediction models are estimated econometrically for major commercially grown sugarcane cultivars. This information is incorporated into a farm-level harvest scheduling linear programming model. The harvest scheduling model solves for an optimal daily harvest schedule which maximizes whole farm net returns above harvesting costs. Model results are compared for a commercial sugarcane farm in Louisiana.

This report presents estimates of costs and returns associated with sugarcane production practices in Louisiana for 2001. It is part of a continuing effort to provide farmers, researchers, extension personnel, lending agencies and others working in agriculture and/or agribusiness timely planning information. Sugarcane production is unique in that it is a perennial crop grown in a rotation; processing, storage and marketing services are provided by a single entity and payments for said services are "in kind." Further, the large majority of growers are tenants, paying approximately 20 percent of the "after milling crop proceeds" (12.2% of gross production) for land. Soldier (wholestalk) harvesting of sugarcane has been the predominant method of harvesting sugarcane in Louisiana for many years. With the short harvesting season and frequently wet harvesting conditions found in the state, this type of harvesting system has proven to be a very flexible and suitable system. Combine (billet) harvesters have the ability to recover more of the sugarcane in the field, compared to soldier harvesters, particularly in fields with lodged sugarcane. This report quantifies some of the differences in machinery requirements, performance rates, and estimated costs of operating soldier and combine sugarcane harvesting systems in Louisiana.

This paper examines the possibilities of breaking into the cellulosic ethanol market in south Louisiana via strategic feedstock choices and the leveraging of the area’s competitive advantages. Hybrid Rice Production Possibilities in the Southern Rice Producing Region AgEcon

Hybrid rice represents a new and increasing popular variety option for rice producers. This study examines the acreage diversification among long grain rice varieties in the southern rice region and presents estimates of thedifferences in expected costs and returns among the production of conventional, Clearfield®, and hybrid rice varieties. Breakeven yield increases required to cover additional hybrid rice production costs are estimated over a range of rough rice market prices for both owner and tenant rental situations. Rough rice market price adjustments resulting from grade differences from milling yields are also discussed.

The results of time-series analysis support a newly added counter-cyclical payment in the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 for all crops except corn.

Determining the Future for Louisiana Sugar Cane Products, Inc.: A Case Study Analyzing Vertical Coordination Options AgEcon

Deciding how to coordinate activities can be a challenge posed in any marketing chain. This case involves an agricultural cooperative that has focused entirely on marketing raw sugar cane for additional refinement. Recent dramatic shifts in the sector have caused the members of the cooperative to consider building a facility that will process the raw sugar cane. In so doing, the cooperative can consider using the spot market, using contracts, vertically coordinating, or vertically integrating. This case study of Louisiana Sugar Cane Products, Inc. is a unique, real-life case that can be widely used in marketing and cooperatives courses.

This paper examines the USDA price estimates of rice, wheat, and soybeans and whether spot commodity prices reflect price information embodied in USDA estimates. Results indicate that the monthly USDA estimates are failed to meet a rationality condition. Rice and wheat actual prices marginally incorporate the information embodied in USDA past price estimates.

This paper examines the introduction of energy cane and switchgrass in the available crops for production in the Louisiana Sugarcane Belt. Employing an optimal crop mix model net returns over variable costs for each county is maximized. Furthermore, this paper determines the optimal processing plant location based upon transportation of the biomass produced to one central location for processing.

THE RESPONSIVENESS OF U.S. RICE ACREAGE TO PRICE AND PRODUCTION COSTS AgEcon

Ordinary least squares and seemingly unrelated regression procedures were used to analyze the impacts of changes in rice prices and production costs on U.S. rice planted acreage. National and regional response models were estimated over the 1970-92 period. Supply-inducing prices of rice were estimated as a function of effective rice support prices and seasonal average market prices. Expected production costs per acre were estimated using lagged actual total variable cash production expenses per acre adjusted by the previous 3-year average annual change in variable expenses. Impact of Sugarcane Delivery Schedule on Product Value at Raw Sugar Factories AgEcon

Conversion to combine harvesters has resulted in Louisiana sugarcane growers delivering a more perishable product to raw sugar factories. Dextran formation increases as the time between harvest and milling is extended. Milling of freshly cut sugarcane reduces the formation of dextran and associated economic losses. One approach available to factories to reduce dextran formation is to extend the harvested sugarcane delivery schedule to the mill. A simulation model was developed to evaluate alternative delivery schedules at raw sugar factories. Economic losses in product value associated with dextran formation were estimated and compared for various extended delivery schedules.
