Constructed wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment in a Mediterranean climate region in Chile Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Mancilla Villalobos,Rodrigo; Zúñiga,Jimena; Salgado,Eduardo; Schiappacasse,Maria Cristina; Chamy Maggi,Rolando.
Background: Constructed wetlands are a promising, cheap and effective wastewater treatment in small communities. The studies on these systems have been reported mainly from cold, tropical or subtropical climate regions. In this work we constructed a pilot plant with six horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF CWs) with a surface area of 2 m² and a depth of 0.6 m each, planted with Typha latifolia or Scirpus sp., and filled with gravel (G) or fine gravel (FG) of 2.8 and 1.2 cm of diameter respectively, continuously fed with raw domestic wastewater. This experimental setup was evaluated over 280 days for the removal of organic matter and nutrients in a Mediterranean climate, near Valparaíso, Chile. The removal of total COD, NH4+-N and PO4-3-P...

Responses of young Punica granatum plants under four different water regimes Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Bugueño,Felipe; Livellara,Nieggiorba; Varas,Fernando; Undurraga,Pedro; Castro,Mónica; Salgado,Eduardo.
We studied the effect of four irrigation treatments, expressed as fractions (1.3, 1.0, 0.7 and 0.3) of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), on the growth of young pomegranate plants in central Chile (32°32’ S and 71°06’ W). We evaluated the effect of the four treatments on canopy volume (CV) during two growing seasons. For 28 days during the second growing season, we evaluated soil moisture content (0), the soil-moisture depletion factor (p), trunk cumulative growth (TCG), trunk growth rate (TGR) and maximum daily trunk shrinkage (MDS). We found relationships between CV and TCG and between CV and TGR. There were no differences in MDS among the irrigation treatments. We observed significant water stress in plants in the 0.3 ETc treatment (p =...

Quantification and control of runoff and soil erosion on avocado orchards on ridges along steep-hillslopes Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Youlton,Cristian; Espejo,Paulina; Biggs,Jaime; Norambuena,Marcela; Cisternas,Marco; Neaman,Alexander; Salgado,Eduardo.
Soil erosion increases after building downward ridges along steep hillslopes, in particular during the first winter. This erosion decreases when trees grow, but runoff increases. This study presents results of erosion under five different treatments: (i) soil cover with native vegetation, (ii) bare downward ridges, (iii) downward ridges with six year-old avocado orchard, (iv) downward ridges with plant cover and (v) downward ridges covered with agroindustrial waste sludge. The results revealed 20 t ha-1 of soil erosion during the first year after ridges were built, while mitigation measures can reduce erosion in 90%. Adult orchard showed the largest runoff, which probably is due to the effect of a high and about constant soil moisture during irrigation...

Crown and root rot of highbush blueberry caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi and P. citrophthora and cultivar susceptibility Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Larach,Alejandra; Besoain,Ximena; Salgado,Eduardo.
Chile is the largest producer and exporter of blueberries in the southern hemisphere. During the 2006-2007 growing season, blueberry production increased in Chile as a result of an expansión of the planted área, reaching around 10,762 ha in 2007. Fungal diseases are of great importance in blueberry production; among them, Phytophthora root rot is a disease known worldwide as a major cause of death for highbush blueberry plants in the USA. Symptoms of Phytophthora root rot have been detected over the last four years in Chile. Nevertheless, the causal agents have not been previously described in Chile. This study aims to determine the pathogenicity of Phytophthora spp. isolated from highbush blueberry and to study cultivar susceptibility. The pathogenicity...
