Achieving high baking quality and sufficient yield is often a challenge in organic wheat production. Two varieties of winter wheat and seven varieties of spring wheat in autumn sowing (End of October) were compared regarding winter hardiness, grain yield and baking quality. The field trial was conducted between 2010 and 2013 on a sandy loam nearby Freising, Bavaria. In 2011, the results for winter hardiness were only available due to a damage of hail. With one exception spring wheat showed comparable winter hardiness to the two varieties of winter wheat. Additionally, one variety of spring wheat showed comparable grain yield and baking quality to the two varieties of winter wheat. The other six spring wheat showed either lower grain yield or lower baking... |

The impact of seed source (conventional or organic farming) is one important question for the variety trials under the conditions of organic farming. Hence, field trials were conducted at two sites in Bavaria in two years (2013-2014). Certified organic seed from a Bavarian propagation were compared to conventional seed, offered by breeders for national variety trials. One until two varieties were examined for winter rye and for winter triticale in each year. Organic seed often showed higher crude protein content, conventional seed had mainly higher thousand seed weight and often superior germination power. The grain yield was mostly higher for conventionally produced seeds than for organic seed at one site, whereas seed source showed no differences with... |

Achieving high baking quality and sufficient yield is often a challenge in organic wheat production. The impact of sowing date (either autumn or spring) was compared regarding grain yield, baking quality and infestation with chloropid gout fly of seven varieties of spring wheat. The field trial was conducted in 2010, 2012 and 2013 on a sandy loam nearby Freising, Bavaria. Two varieties showed higher grain yield after autumn sowing compared to spring sowing in two of the three years. But the opposite occurred consequently for two other varieties. The other three varieties showed no consistent reaction. This different reaction may refer in the majority to a different infestation with chloropid gout fly. Additionally, a higher baking quality (protein... |

Effective microorganisms (EM) were often applied in organic farming. The influence of three different compounds with EM (EM A, EM ceramic powder, Terra Biosa) was examined as compared with a control without application in a stationary field trial. The trial was conducted in 2004 – 2006 at Freising, Bavaria. Field beans, winter wheat and spring barley were grown. Higher crop yields in the variants with EM A and Terra Biosa application as well as higher crude protein content with EM ceramic powder application were determined compared to the control in each one of the three years. Susceptibility to diseases, resistance to lodging, thousand seed weight, sorting of grain yield and weed abundance were not affected by EM application. Taken into account the... |

The impact of seeding time was tested for hybrid rye in a yearlong field trial in Upper Bavaria. The rye (one variety) was seeded with the same sowing density at the end of September and at the mid of October, respectively. The impact of seeding time could be observed year-round: the mass growth before and after winter was obviously reduced by late sowing in comparison to usual seeding time. The results were lower plant height and clearly lower plant density in the variant late seeding time. Finally, the yield in the variant with usual seeding time was 27 % higher than by late sowing. Otherwise, the crude protein content, the falling number and the thousand seed weight were higher by late sowing. All in all, late sowing of hybrid rye may not be... |

In stockless organic farming, crop rotation is one of the most important factors that determine the success of crop cultivation. Six crop rotation schemes in a long-term experiment of the Bavarian State Research Center of Agriculture at Viehhausen allow the estimation of the effect of crop rotations on grain yield and baking quality of winter wheat. The three and five years crop rotations differed in the utilization of grass clover swards (cutting or mulching), in the following crops (potatoes or barley), in the portion of grass clover swards and in the type of legume (grass clover or grain legume). The lowest grain yield as well as the most inferior baking quality was shown after grain legume. The highest yield was obtained after the two-year grass-clover... |

In organic crop rotations proportion, use and type of legumes have a different effect on subsequent crops. The yield of subsequent cash crops is affected by the farming system (livestock with organic fertilizer or stockless) and the temporal distance of the cash crop to the legume. To investigate the intermediate- and long-term effects on yield and productivity, a long-term field trial with six crop rotations was established in 1997 in Viehhausen, Upper Bavaria (one crop rotation with a period of 5 years, five crop rotations with 3 years). The present report tested these crop rotations regarding yield and productivity for the years 2000 to 2010. Significant differences were determined in productivity when legumes were included into the calculation. Crop... |

The impact of a common and a reduced seeding rate on grain yield and quality for winter triticale was examined in four growing seasons at two experimental sites in Bavaria. Grain yield was lower for reduced seeding rate only in one of the four years in one environment. In that environment weed controlling was impossible because of high precipitation in autumn and spring. This was resulting in markedly higher weed coverage at reduced seeding rate due to a comparatively lower competitiveness. In all other environments no statistical differences in grain yields were determined because of higher 1000 K weight and higher tillering at reduced seeding rate. Fur-thermore, the crude protein content was higher for reduced seeding rate (9.4 and 8.9 % in DM,... |

Leguminous cover crops are one important source of nitrogen in organic stockless farming. Therefore the influence of six legume species in pure stands and one grass-clover mixture on grain yield and quality of the undersown winter rye and of the succeeding crop spring oat was examined. Three field trials were conducted at one experimental site in southern Bavaria (2005/06/07 until 2007/08/09; in 2005/06/07 only three of six leguminous undersowings). Additionally, after the harvest of rye two stubble seeds (clover in pure and mixed stands with vetch and mustard) and a control (rye without cover crop) were established in each year. The cash crop was not affected by the undersown variants with respect to grain yield and quality. However, grain yield of the... |

Cropping spring barley, long varieties with vigorous growth are desired in organic farming expecting better regulation of weeds. Six old varieties were compared to three modern varieties in a field trial during 2010 and 2011 nearby Freising, Bavaria. The modern varieties were the recommended varieties for Bavaria at beginning of the trial. Higher crop yields were determined for modern varieties with limitation for one of these varieties. The malt quality of the modern varieties was considerably better than for the old varieties. Vigorous growth and plant length was higher for all and for five of the six old in comparison to modern varieties, respectively. But no differences in weed pressure could be measured due to successful mechanical weed control.... |

For stockless organic farming cultivation of leguminous cover crops is an important source for the nitrogen supply of organic cropping systems. However, too strongly developing living mulch systems may affect the undersown cash crop. At two experimental sites in Bavaria the impact of the sowing date of cover crops on grain yield of the undersown cash crop winter rye and the subsequent crop spring oat was determined in two and three field trials, respectively (2003/04/05 until 2004/05/06 and 2002/03/04 until 2004/05/06, respectively). Living mulch treatments were white clover and grass-clover (alfalfa, red and white clover, diverse grasses) with seeding in autumn and spring as well as red clover and black medick with seeding only in autumn. Additionally, a... |

The productivity of seven soybean cultivars was examined at two experimental farms in Upper Bavaria during three growing seasons. Highest grain and crude protein yields were determined for the cultivar Merlin (maturity group 000), whereas other varieties of the same maturity group and the high protein cultivars Primus and Lotus obtained considerably lower yields. Harvest date for soybeans of maturity group 000 was usually in the mid of September. In five of six environments 000 cultivars harvested in average 16 days earlier than varieties of lower maturity groups. Expectably highest crude protein contents were analysed for Lotus and Primus. |

The preceding crop effect of fodder legumes concerning sowing date, type of legume and utilization were conducted in field trials at two sites in Upper Bavaria in 2012- 2013. All in all, seven types of clover in pure stands or clover/grass leys were grown one main production year. Sowing dates were undersowings in triticale in spring, stubble seeds after harvest of preceding crop triticale and spring seed in the main production year. Utilization variants were mulching or cutting without organic fertilization in the subsequent crop winter wheat. Mulching of fodder legumes resulted in higher yields and mostly higher baking quality (crude protein content, wet gluten content and baking volume) of the succeeding wheat. Earlier sowings leaded mostly to... |
