The initial focus of the PELGAS integrated survey was to assess the small pelagic fish biomass in the Bay of Biscay in springtime, for fisheries management purposes. Sampling has been extended to produce long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data and indices, describing the main pelagic ecosystem components: hydrology, phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, fish and megafauna. A collaborative analysis of these datasets has brought new insights on the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem summarized here. New results on single ecosystem components include an analysis of water samples to groundtruth the results of an ocean color algorithm aiming at detecting phytoplanktonic coccolithophores. New insights on mesozooplankton spatio-temporal distribution and energy... |

In a context of several directives for transitional and coastal waters masses (Water Framework Directive, Marine Strategy Framework Directive and Bathing Water Directive), the good ecological status of water but also conservation of marine ecosystem should be quickly achieved. The Basque coastline (SE of the Bay of Biscay) is subject to strong human pressures with a high density of population over the year, and especially during the summer with tourist activities. It generates nutrient discharge, water and sediment pollution and impacts the quality of the marine environment. Such pressure and the way to reduce its impacts are the main concerns of authorities Locally, in order to improve wastewater treatment process, an alternative technical solution is... |

The new protocol, established by Auby et al. (2012) to the seagrass monitoring under the Water Framework Directive, was used in Txingudi bay (Hendaye, France). Based on 3 metrics ("taxonomy", "extension" and "density"), the quality index of the water body for the angiosperm indicator, was "medium", while it was in "good condition" in 2012. These results are explained by a sharp drop in the density observed on the monitoring station. The cartography of the species distribution showed a decrease of the total area of seagrass, particularly in the southern part of the mudflat. However, further north, small intertidal seagrass spots appeared. Atypical weather conditions in 2013 (cold, heavy spring rain) with silting of this area, could explain this situation. |

The Pelgas16 acoustic survey has been carried out with very good weather conditions (regular low wind, medium temperatures) for the whole area, from the South of the bay of Biscay to the west of Brittany. The help of commercial vessels (two pairs of pelagic trawlers and a single one) during 18 days provided about 120 valid identification hauls instead of about 60 before 2007 when Thalassa was alone to identify echotraces. Their participation increased the precision of identification of echoes and some double hauls permitted to confirm that results provided by the two types of vessels (R/V and Fishing boats) were comparable and usable for biomass estimate purposes. These commercial vessels participated to the PELGAS survey in a very good spirit of... |

Asari (= Manila) clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is the second bivalve mollusc in terms of production in the world and, in many coastal areas, can beget important socio-economic issues. In Europe, this species was introduced after 1973. In Arcachon Bay, after a decade of aquaculture attempt, Asari clam rapidly constituted neo-naturalized population which is now fished. However, recent studies emphasized the decline of population and individual performances. In the framework of a national project (REPAMEP), some elements of fitness, stressors and responses in Arcachon bay were measured and compared to international data (41 publications, 9 countries). The condition index (CI=flesh weight/shell weight) was the lowest among all compared sites. Variation in... |

Bivalves are important components of benthic marine and freshwater ecosystems throughout the world. One of the most exploited bivalves used for human consumption is manila clam (Venerupis philippinarum). In Arcachon Bay (SW France), commercial fishers and scientists have developed a monitoring survey to estimate clam stocks to assist in implementing a sustainable management strategy. The survey design that is currently used is based on standard stratified random sampling (StRS). The survey has been undertaken every 2 years since 2006. Each survey costs approximately (sic) 50 000, with funding provided by similar to 20% of the commercial fishers. The survey is quite expensive, given that this resource is managed mostly at a regional level. In 2016 for... |

An acoustic survey (PELGAS) is carried out every year in the Bay of Biscay in spring onboard the French research vessel Thalassa. The objective of PELGAS survey is to study the abundance and distribution of pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay. The main target species are anchovy and sardine but they are considered in a multi-specific context and within an ecosystemic approach as they are located in the centre of pelagic ecosystem. The Pelgas17 acoustic survey has been carried out with medium weather conditions (regular wind, low atmospheric temperatures) for the whole area, from the South of the bay of Biscay to the west of Brittany. The help of commercial vessels (two pairs of pelagic trawlers and a single one) during 18 days provided about 110 valid... |

In 2020, the Zostera noltei seagrass bed monitoring, located on the transitional water body FRFT08 Bidassoa (Txingudi Bay, Hendaye - Pyrénées Atlantiques), was carried out from a grid of 30 sample points ("stationary" monitoring) and from a mapping within the framework of the WFD. The "angiosperms" indicator established on this water body is based on 3 metrics (composition, extent and abundance). In 2020, the calculation of this indicator classifies the water body in "Very good condition". This result is explained both by a significant increase in the seagrass bed surface area, from 1.9 ha in 2018 to 4.5 ha in 2020 and by a good abundance. |

The initial objective of the PELGAS integrated survey was to assess the biomass of small pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay in spring. Sampling has been extended to study the spatial structure and dynamics of the pelagic ecosystem in springtime. The PELGAS survey has produced since 2000 long-term time-series of spatially-explicit data and indices, describing the main pelagic ecosystem components: hydrology, phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, fish and megafauna. In addition to small pelagic fish biomass estimates used for fish stock assessment, the survey now delivers two types of ecosystem products: standard gridded maps of ecosystem parameters, and a time series dataset of indicators of the Bay of Biscay pelagic ecosystem state. The evolution of the PELGAS... |
