Gesellschaftliche Leistungen der biologischen Landwirtschaft Organic Eprints
Niggli, U.; Schmid, O.; Stolze, M.; Sanders, J.; Schader, C.; Fließbach, A.; Mäder, P.; Klocke, P.; Wyss, G.; Balmer, O.; Pfiffner, L.; Wyss, E..

Cost-Effectiveness Evaluation of Swiss Agri-Environmental Measures on Sector Level Organic Eprints
Schader, C.; Sanders, J.; Offermann, F.; Lampkin, N.H.; Stolze, M..
Abstract This paper focuses on non-linear programming models and their suitability for ex-ante evaluations of agri-environmental policies on sector level. An approach is presented to compare organic farming payments as a multi-objective policy, with other, more targeted agri-environmental policies in Switzerland. The Swiss version of the comparative static sector-consistent farm group model FARMIS is able to group the sector’s farms into organic and non-organic farms and optimise them separately. CH-FARMIS is expanded with three modules particularly for this study: a) allowing for the simulation of uptake; b) integrating life cycle assessment data for energy use, eutrophication and biodiversity; and c) estimating the policy and farm-group-specific public...

Ökologischer Landbau in Deutschland: Ein aktuelles Stimmungsbild aus der Praxis Organic Eprints
Rodewald, M.; March, S.; Brinkmann, J.; Madsen, G.; Sanders, J..
In order explore the past development, the current situation and the future prospects of organic farming in Germany from a farm , a nationwide survey has been carried out. In total, 218 organic farms from all over Germany who participated in a comprehensive status quo analysis of organic farming in the year 2002/2003 were asked to participate in a follow-up survey fourteen years later. 92 organic farms agreed to do so. Most of them assess the current situation positively. Also their current income situation and the general development opportunities in organic farming make them optimistic. Growth opportunities and the assessments of the lease market however are described in a rather negative light. The evaluation of the vocational training in organic...

Optimierungsansätze zur Verbesserung von Nachhaltigkeit, Ressourceneffizienz und Tierwohl in ökologischen und konventionellen Betrieben im Netzwerk Pilotbetriebe Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Schmid, Harald; Beisecker, R.; Schröder, K.; Warnecke, Sylvia; Hinterstoißer, P.; Wagner, K.; Schüler, Maximilian; Schulz, Franz; Ambros, C.; Koopmann, Regine; March, Solveig; Brinkmann, Jan; Chmelíková, Lucie; Anke, S.; Seith, T.; Becker, Heiko; von Stieglitz, I.; Sanders, J.; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
In a network of organic and conventional pilot farms with dairy and/or arable production in Germany (www.pilotbetriebe.de) aspects of sustainability, resource efficiency, animal health and welfare and economic aspects are analysed. This is based on on-farm assessments and on whole farm modelling. In the first interdisciplinary workshops on the project farms results were presented and scenarios were developed in a participatory approach by scientists, consultants and farmers to improve N, P and land use efficiency as well as dairy health and welfare. Typical areas of action to optimize sustainability in these aspects were identified on the farms, e.g., complete accounting of manure N (N balance), enrichment of crop rotations with clover grass and cover...

A Modelling Approach for Evaluating Agri-Environmental Policies at Sector Level Organic Eprints
Schader, C.; Sanders, J.; Nemecek, T; Lampkin, N. H.; Stolze, M..
This paper presents a new approach to evaluate the cost effectiveness of agri-environmental policies at sector level. Policy uptake, cumulative environmental effects and public expenditure are identified as the main determinants of cost-effectiveness. On the basis of the sector-consistent, comparative-static, farm group model FARMIS, the determinants of policy cost-effectiveness at sector level are addressed. Firstly, intensity levels for the FARMIS activities are defined in order to model uptake of agri-environmental policies with FARMIS, secondly, life-cycle assessment data is attached to these intensity levels to determine environmental effects of the policies and thirdly, public expenditure is calculated under consideration of transaction costs. This...

Devil´s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) from Southern Africa: sustainable use by cultivation combined with controlled harvesting in semi-wild populations Frontis
Schneider, E.; Sanders, J.; Von Willert, D..
Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens), a plant well adapted to the desert conditions of the Kalahari in Southern Africa, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. The herb used is the sliced and dried secondary root tuber developing from the side roots of the succulent main root containing harpagoside as active ingredient. Because the herb is usually collected from the wild the harvesting method used in the past cannot sustain demand on the long term. Experiences of a project for cultivation and sustainable harvest of Harpagophytum in the Kalahari of South Africa paralleled by intensive ecological research will be presented. Methods were established to cultivate the plant and also to transfer gained knowledge to the local communities. The most...
