Morphological variability of the nanoplanktonic diatom Thalassiosira laevis from coastal waters of Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Despite the fact that the genus Thalassiosira was previous and extensively studied including ultrastructural analysis of species found in phytoplanktonic samples collected from marine waters of Argentina, nanoplanktonic species have been frequently overlooked. This paper is devoted to show the morphological variation of Thalassiosira laevis, a nanoplanktonic species collected from marine coastal waters of the Province of Buenos Aires, to compare Argentinean material with those from China, Korea and Brazil described in the literature, and to record it for the first time from Argentina.

Episodios de toxicidad en moluscos de aguas marinas costeras de la provincia de Buenos aires (Argentina) asociados a algas toxígenas (marzo de 2008-marzo de 2013) Boletín de la Sociedad

A partir de un monitoreo de microalgas toxígenas y toxinas en moluscos iniciado en 2008, llevado a cabo entre San Clemente del Tuyú y Mar Azul (Zona Norte) y en la Bahía Anegada (Zona Sur) de la Provincia de Buenos Aires fueron registrados cuatro brotes de toxicidad por toxina paralizante de moluscos (PSP) y ocho brotes por toxinas lipofílicas de moluscos (DSP/no determinadas). Los resultados obtenidos fueron empleados como herramienta técnica a partir de la cual la autoridad de aplicación (Dirección Provincial de Pesca del Ministerio de Asuntos Agrarios de la Provincia de Buenos Aires) fundó la decisión de imponer once vedas y una alerta sanitaria al consumo, extracción y comercialización de moluscos. Analysis of type material of Pleurosigma formosum and P. decorum (Pleurosigmataceae, Bacillariophyta) Boletín de la Sociedad

The type materials of Pleurosigma formosum W. Smith and P. decorum W. Smith were examined. Both species were separated hitherto by size range, valve shape and stria density based on light microscopy (LM) analysis. However, the type materials show some overlap in the size and stria density ranges, with subtle differences in the oblique stria intersection angle, which is somewhat smaller for P. decorum. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that both species share several ultrastructural features such as a thick saddle-shaped central raphe nodule, very long overlapping central raphe fissures, short hook-shaped terminal raphe fissures, general morphology of the internal hymenoccluded pores crossed by a recessed bar and presence of some scattered...

First report of diarrheic shellfish toxins in mollusks from Buenos Aires province (Argentina) associated with dinophysis spp.: evidence of okadaic acid, dinophysistoxin-1 and their acylderivatives Boletín de la Sociedad

In January 2010, the toxin-producing dinoflagellates Dinophysis acuminata and D. caudata (10³ cells·l-1) were detected in Mar Azul during routine plankton monitoring in Buenos Aires Province coastal waters, Argentina. Wild clams Mesodesma mactroides and Donax hanleyanus from Mar Azul intertidal beach, which are part of the diet for local inhabitants and tourists, tested positive with the offcial lipophilic mouse bioassay. This paper focuses on the detection of Diarrhetic Shellfsh Poison (DSP) toxins in these samples using a HPLC-FLD pre column derivatization procedure.
