Stock assessement of wild soft-bottom mol/uses has been part of a general approach to shellfish management in oyster farming in Marennes-Oleron Bay. A sampling survey is described as a stratified random sampling after optimum allocation of the sample sire in each stratum. The aim of this study is ta ilIustrate the use of kriging techniques in the case of suspension-feeders. Regarding suspension-feeding molluscs. trophic competitors of the oyster Crassostrea gigas the whole stratified design produced an estimation with a precision around 25%. Then the geostatistical technique. i.e. kriging was used to depict the spatial and variability patterns of several trophic groups. The biomass data are expressed in ash-free. dry-weight units. In addition, the... |

The direct amplification of length polymorphism technique (DALP) has been used to distinguish species-specific banding patterns in two marine gastropod oyster drills Ocenebra erinacea (Linnaeus, 1758) and Ocinebrellus inornatus (Recluz, 1851). Ocenebra erinacea is the European oyster drill, common along all European coasts. Ocinebrellus inornatus, the Japanese oyster drill, was recorded in oyster growing areas of the Marennes-Oleron Bay (SW France) for the first time in 1995. This new biological invasion could lead to an increase, which must be evaluated, in the predation risk for cultivated species i.e. oysters and blue mussels, and for littoral fishing resources along the French Atlantic coasts. As a result, since specific identification of early life... |

This study aims to describe the patterns of soft bottom macrozoobenthic richness along French coasts. It is based on a collaborative database developed by the “Réseau des Stations et Observatoires Marins” (RESOMAR). We investigated patterns of species richness in sublittoral soft bottom habitats (EUNIS level 3) at two different spatial scales: 1) seaboards: English Channel, Bay of Biscay and Mediterranean Sea and 2) 0.5° latitudinal and longitudinal grid. Total observed richness, rarefaction curves and three incidence-based richness estimators (Chao2, ICE and Jacknife1) were used to compare soft bottom habitats species richness in each seaboard. Overall, the Mediterranean Sea has the highest richness and despite higher sampling effort, the English Channel... |

Spatial changes in the dietary regime of Ruditapes philippinarum from intertidal sediments of Arcachon Bay were depicted by analyzing stable isotope ratios in both its adductor muscles and potential trophic sources. Manila clams were collected from 50 sites in May to June 2006. Dietary reconstruction was based on the IsoSource mixing model, considering trophic enrichments of 3.5%. for carbon and 3.0%. for nitrogen, which were determined experimentally. delta C-13 and delta N-15 values, respectively, averaged -28.2 and 5.2 parts per thousand for riverine particulate organic matter (POM), -20.6 and 4.7 parts per thousand for inner bay phytoplankton, -21.0 and 5.6%. for outer bay phytoplankton, -16.8 and 4.8 parts per thousand. for microphytobenthos, -18.4... |

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) sets an objective of "good condition" for aquatic environments by 2015. Its implementation along the shoreline is the object of a well-established collaboration between the Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development (which became the Ministry of Sustainable Ecology, Development and Urban Planning), the Water Agencies and IFREMER. While the MEDD/IFREMER national agreement brings elements of methodology and general knowledge for managing French shoreline policy, it covers only very partially the needs of shoreline politics in Brittany and the Pays de la Loire region, and requires supplementary items linked to the specifics of the Loire-Brittany shoreline: very widespread and numerous water masses due to the presence... |

This paper aims to establish a comprehensive Iist of exotic species introduced into Atlantic French waters over the last century as well as their origin, and the vectors involved in the process. At least 104 non indigenous species have been recorded in the Atlantic and Channel coastal wa ters. Among those species, only a few (Bonamia ostreae, Crepidula fornicata) have resulted in highly significant negative impacts and side-effects on the coastal activity. In contrast, the introduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas can be considered to be successful, sustaining a large industry counting more than 4,000 companies and 150,000 tons of yearly production. Over the last decade, French and European laws have strenghtened the controls over exotic... |

Based on a parallel sampling conducted during autumn 2008, a comparative study of the intertidal benthic macrofauna among 10 estuarine systems located along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France was performed in order to assess the level of fauna similarity among these sites and to identify possible environmental factors involved in the observed pattern at both large (among sites) and smaller (benthic assemblages) scales. More precisely this study focused on unraveling the observed pattern of intertidal benthic fauna composition and diversity observed at among-sites scale by exploring both biotic and abiotic factors acting at the among- and within-site scales. Results showed limited level of similarity at the among-site level in terms of intertidal... |

During the Late Holocene, the rate of sea level rise decreased and climate changes, hydrodynamic processes or anthropogenic impacts became predominant parameters governing the sedimentary infill of estuarine environments. The aim of this study is to describe the response of past benthic mollusc communities to these forcing factors. Mollusc skeletal remains were sampled from three 8000, 5500 and 2600 year-long sedimentary records in the Marennes-Oleron Bay (Atlantic Coast, France), where environmental changes have previously been identified thanks to a combination of very high resolution seismic profiles and sedimentological data. Molluscan assemblages successfully record environmental changes, even at the smallest temporal scale. They provide relevant... |

We investigated the influence of bioturbation by macrofauna on the vertical distribution of living (stained) benthic foraminifera in marine intertidal sediments. We investigated the links between macrofaunal bioturbation and foraminiferal distribution, by sampling from stations situated on a gradient of perturbation by oyster-farming, which has a major effect on benthic faunal assemblages. Sediment cores were collected on the French Atlantic coast, from three intertidal stations: an oyster farm, an area without oysters but affected by oyster biodeposits, and a control station. Axial tomodensitometry (CT-scan) was used for three-dimensional visualization and two-dimensional analysis of the cores. Biogenic structure volumes were quantified and compared... |

Microphytobenthos plays an important role as primary producer in shallow embayments subject to a tidal regime. The present paper aims to characterize the spatial patterns of sedimentary chlorophyll a (chl a) biomass in 2 seasons in the wide intertidal mudflats of the Marennes-Oleron Bay (France); furthermore, it provides estimates of total microphytobenthic biomass. Accordingly, a systematic sampling scheme was performed in June 1995 and in January 1996. On average, biomass was higher in June (ca 120 mg chl a m-2) than in January (ca 85 mg chl a m-2). Moreover, the geostatistical analysis revealed that spatial similarities were propagated over larger distances in June (6 km) than in January (2.2 km). In order to account for this result , we suggest that... |

A portable erosion device (ERIS) was deployed in November 2000 and May 2001 to investigate the spatio-temporal variation of fine-grained sediment erosion over a transect on the intertidal mudflats of Marennes-Oleron Bay, western France. The objective was to relate changes in bed erodability over diurnal emersion periods to bioturbation, rapid changes in sediment characteristics, and microphytobenthos biomass. Macrofaunal assemblages were dominated by the bivalve, Scrobicularia plana, on the upper mudflat, and by the gastropod, Hydrobia ulvae. on the middle mudflat. A power relationship was obtained where tau(cr) was plotted as a function of sediment density. Results from the upper part of the mudflat deviated from this relationship due to bioturbation by... |

1.This report presents the results of a field study conducted in the ECASA test site nOS in the Pertuis Breton, France. The site is located on the Atlantic West coasts. It is open to the bay of Biscay, but is slightly protected against westerly winds. The bay has been exploited by intertidal mussels culture for centuries. 2. Within the bay, mussels (Mytilus edulis) are cultivated either by the traditional pole technique, around the bay or on longlines in the centre of the bay. The area occupied by these longline s represents 250 ha, and the resulting annual production is 1 000 tonnes of mussels. The average depth at mid tide is of 13.8 m. The sediment is sandy, with a small fraction of mud. 3. The site is subject to several regular monitoring through the... |
