Última Leaf anatomy variation within and between three "restinga" populations of Erythroxylum ovalifolium Peyr: (Erythroxylaceae) in Southeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot. Erythroxylum ovalifolium is a woody shrub widespread in the "restinga", i.e. the open scrub vegetation of the Brazilian coastal sandy plains. We examined leaf anatomy variation of this species both within populations and between populations of three "restingas" in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Sites were ca.100 km far from each other and differed in regard to rainfall and vegetation structure: a dry, open site; a wet, dense site and an intermediate one. Microhabitats within sites were: (i) exposed to full irradiance, outside vegetation islands; (ii) partially exposed to full irradiance, at the border of vegetation islands; (iii) shaded, inside vegetation islands. Os impactos antrópicos sobre as Restingas vêm se intensificando de tal forma nas últimas décadas que hoje é prioritária a conservação dos poucos remanescentes existentes e a restauração de áreas degradadas. A produção de mudas é etapa importante neste processo. Dados fenológicos obtidos para 72 espécies mostraram grande variação na época e na duração da frutificação, indicando que a colheita de sementes deve ser realizada ininterruptamente ao longo do ano, para que seja obtida diversidade expressiva de espécies. Cinqüenta por cento destas espécies não apresentaram qualquer restrição para a produção de mudas. This is a reply to Buckeridge & Aidar's (2002) Point of View on the possible usefulness of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) built to increase carbon sequestration, and Plant Gene Therapy (PGT), particularly in rain forests, as future tools to reduce excessive atmospheric CO2. We argue that the alternatives to carbon sequestration they presented should not be treated as scientific or political priority, since their arguments have major ecological and socio-political flaws, such as ecological unpredictability, the existence of an already high potential for carbon sequestration by native non-manipulated plants, and the relevance of scientific and political sovereignty in regard to the global change issue.
